If you’re still looking – I’ve got a Simple (med Black, White panel graphics) with an XLII h/set and white U-turn Revelations for sale – open to offers?

If the OP isn’t interested, could you email with info please? (details in profile) – couldn’t find another way to contact you!

    cheers

They still do (here) the vertical dropout one, but you’d better need a 16in as the rest have gone.

Seeing as I do really rather enjoy / love my slidy dropout steel (obviously) Inbred, would I be equally enamoured with a slot dropout Scandal?

I mean; I do like the look of the price (a lot), but scrolling through the ‘show us yer steel hardtails’ thread makes me appreciate that even cheap steel is really quite nice.

Daft really – according to Planet On One, the Scandal’s “supposed” to ride similar to the Inbred, but does it?

where in the UK are you guys? I’ve only seen them in Spain (february) and Mallorca (March) so far this year, so that doesn’t really count. Can’t wait for them to get up to the Peak District – one of my absolute favourite things ever – seeing and hearing them over the little valley on the edge of our estate* from the back of our house.

*housing estate; not ‘country estate’, like Chatsworth! :-)

My knees were the first thing i thought of…! I’ll refit the BB tomorrow and give that a try. I suppose that’s the right way to go about it – in a methodical manner… just doesn’t normally end up like that.

Bavaria 0.0% here – fewer calories too. Kaliber / Cobra not that great, the Becks is passable. Trick is to not mix drinking it with the real stuff. In Spain, the San Miguel sin alcohol is really quite good stuff, and available everywhere.

Flatly refuse to get drawn on the whys and wherefores of it’s the right thing to do or not, but as a veggie sausage eater, I’m probably not the best person to comment. :-)

Thanks Mark – but it’s the sliding dropout, rather than the slot dropout, so the tugs are the type with the thin allen bolt that sits outboard (to the rear) of the dropouts, and the sliding part is secured with two chunky allen bolts in each side.

Whilst I wondered if that may be the culprit, it’s the same squeak that I’ve had on the old (vertical dropout) frame – it’s such a loud / chronic squeak too – I’d recognise it anywhere!

Dave – thank you. Very informative and much appreciated. I was very conscious not to compare too hard, and from what you say there clearly is a difference. Thanks for your post.

I got my first Inbred this week – 2nd hand sliding dropout DN6 frame running 32/16. Doesn’t look it’s aligned very well at the back, ropey paint, 1.5lbs heavier than the frame that I swapped out for it…

… but boy is it fun! I can see what all the fuss is about.

So saying, if someone wants to sell me an Indy Fab for the same money, I’d take it!

If you can’t stretch to that Trance on Paul’s check to see if they’ve still got the Yukon FX3 at £300… full susser, Dart forks, 2009 spec. Only big downside is the mechanical discs, but you’d prob get some LX discs off the Classifieds on here for £60 or thereabouts. Can’t believe the deal on that bike – and they did have them in stock as my old man got one the other week! Then again – the Trance looks like a heck of a lot of bike for the money. I think what it is is that Giant have an April – April model year for their sub £1k bikes, hence the deals on their 2009 stock ahead of some of the other brands – but I could be wrong.

IIRC, and you have bucket loads of cash to blow on your good lady, FoxyChick got a rather nice engraved stem cap for her new IF from these people in the States (I think). It looks like there’s a tonne of coloured bling that you can fritter your hard earned away on on that site…

Different is good. Wouldn’t do to all be the same would it? The hills would be totally clogged up if we were all out riding on our own!

Best thing about this evening’s little jolly was I got home before it started to rain. Rain? What’s that?! :-)

I agree with a lot of the people – riding on your own is the best way to escape. I can’t bear the sight of great groups of people in the countryside – cyclists, ramblers, whatever – it’s visual pollution as far as I’m concerned. The great outdoors should (in my humble opinion) not be spoiled by consumption en masse. By all means get out there, but don’t do it like some great coach party. I guess there’s a time and a place for big groups, but it’s not something I look for particularly.

Those pics, FC, look lovely – you’ve really captured the mood of riding on your own. Yes – you do ride within yourself, but it’s the self sufficiance and long walk home that gives it even more of a buzz.

Don’t get me wrong – a pair, three or even four of you is a great way to spend a day, and it’s something I do a fair amount, but I do find that I probably ride on my own more than I do in company, and it’s just better for the soul!

When all’s said and done, any riding, on any bicycle has got to be good for you – and it’s really good of you to rub it in, Foxy, when I’ve been at work today and you’ve been out on that IF again! Bah – but then I did get a quick sneaky SS in after dinner… on my own! :?

    >> numpty mini hijack (sorry) <<

On my singlespeed, I have self extracing bolts on the RS8s that I’ve just picked up second hand. They do seem to come loose during a ride – and I was very aware of tightening them back up during the ride, but should I put Loctite on the (female) threads of the axle? Will it still be able to ‘self extract’ – and just require a bit more elbow grease?

Also, how do you get the self extractng bolt out the end of the crank arm? It has a series of small holes on the ring around the outside of the allen bolt – I’m guessing it’s something to do with that?

Sorry for the hijack – I guess it’s sort of relevant to the whole debate… :?

God you’re so juvenile! Make sure you never change! :D

How are you finding the bike? I’m just on the cusp of ordering that same frame – is the rear wheel easy to set up / keep in place? Rear disc performance good? What kind of weight does it come out with the rigid forks?

    cheers

I’m off to Tesco now that the sun’s out properly, but I had “Plan B” in action at half six this morning, so got a little sneaky singlespeed jolly in. It’s all about the planning, but as I’ll be around all day now, I can feel Tesco being followed by the garden, followed by hoovering, followed by the tip… hey ho! :?

Now that looks nice Clink – you lucky beggar!!!

Wonder if they’ll do it as a 26er? I really like the look of Stumpy’s sliding dropout one though – hoping it might be available…!

If you’re interested in selling the frame, and it’s an 18″… my email’s in the profile!!!

The slotted Scandal does look a good option, doesn’t it? Are you thinking it’ll handle similar to the Inbred?

Do they do a slot dropout Ti one then, Clink or do you mean the 456 geared frame? Would love to see to see it if you’ve got it done as a SS…!

I had mine with 100 – 130 U-Turn Revs on – that sorted the climbing out. It was the best descending bike I’ve ever had – it actually felt safer than any of the three subsequent full sussers I’ve owned – in a “don’t worry, I’ll get you out of this mess” kind of way. It genuinly felt like it was looking after my (and my shonky riding skills). I really do remember that aspect of riding it quite fondly! Sad eh?

So why did I get rid of it? Even with Conti 2.3 tyres front and back, I just got so beaten up on the rough stuff – trekking along, not downhilling – and couldn’t keep up with the other guys on that sort of terrain who were on full sussers.

I’d have another one though (or a Chameleon) but in my dotage suspect a Hummer would be more sensible. And a touch pricier.

Oh yeah – the paint was a bit iffy too, and the stickers are the kind of things you get free with MBUK.

[pendant]weather was good in The Peak District as well[/pedant]

incorrect use of the word ‘pendant’ – someting that I think is typically worn on the end of a necklace, as opposed to something that forms a corner frequented by people bashing on about inconsequential tosh (ourselves included).

That really does look the business – love the colour and your choice of parts on it – very, very neat. Do you know if it’s a custom colour? If so, I’d love to know where the previous owner got the decals from. If my Rock Lobster wasn’t titanium I’d be straight off down the paint shop to unceremoniously copy you!!! Does it ride as great as it looks?

The state of your decking on the other hand – is, as already mentioned – an absolute shambles.

Just got my Dad the bottom end 2009 Giant Yukon FX3 for absolute peanuts from Paul’s – they have them better specced for closer to your budget, but I can’t get over how cheap they’re doing them – extraordinary. Spend the change on your bike – she’ll never know!

Yes – I’m sure you’re right that the contact patch of the tyre will make a difference, but I just remember enjoying fantastic stopping power on what was essentially a flat barred roadbike – compared to my recollections of V brakes and experience of even really good road calipers.

Discs – every time. Stopping on the proverbial dime in heavy traffic – especially as you’re commuting on it – will be worth it, and the fact that your rims won’t wear through over the winter will be another good reason. I used to have mine as a SS, then as a 1×9 – rack, mudguards, discs, 1.5″ semi slicks – it was ace. Great fun.

yeah – don’t forget the descents into Hollinsclough around Longnor – some of them are big, chunky drops – but whereas Chapel Gate is getting close to being unrideable in some sections (unless you take the chicken runs), you can bounce down some of the descents around Longor very satisfatorily. That’s if when we’re talking ‘hardest’ we mean ‘technically difficult’. There’s a whole section in the back of the White Peak guide on Longnor – and really any of those are worth a stab.

Here’s the geometry chart – you’re absolutely right ajf – they say they’re the same.

farm-boy – I spent ages trying to source an Excentriker or the Forward Components one – absolute nightmare and now the price has gone through the roof. It’s like both companies don’t want to sell one in the UK. What do you think of it? Was it pretty easy to set up? What chainset is it on there – did you need to remove the granny tabs? Mine’s the inner ring from an FSA Gossamer road compact, so shouldn’t present a problem. Have you got any more pics of it?

Take the tourist bus. When we went (admittedly a few years ago) it was two loops in like a figure of 8 – a blue and a red loop. You could get a ticket for both days, get off where you wanted and back on the next one. It taks in the cathedral, Olympic village, footie stadium, port area – all well worth stopping for. I can’t recall if it also took you up in the hills, where you get an amazing view of the city and the famous ‘grid pattern’ that it’s built on. Or something like that.

Like Rusty says, just watch your rucksacks / handbags for the pickpockets around the tourist hotspot bits like La Ramblas – we did feel a little uncomfortable at times, but just be sensible. The city’s lovely – and it’ll be warm too.

Farm-Boy – at least I’m not the only person trying to singlespeed one! What are you running on yours? Mine’s 34/17 though it was 34/16 with a proper SS cog, but as the chain’s worn, it now has a 17 off an XT block but great tension.

That pic has it with the 16 on the back and I’ve gone back to Panaracer Fire XC Pros rather than the Conti Race King’s until the summer is here properly.

ajf – that looks sweet – you must be very happy, in spite of the weather!

Right – just off out on mine in the dark…
