    My Ultegra doesn’t index either.
New cables ( genuine Shimano inner & outer), new rear mech, hanger straight-checked by me in the shop using the Park alignment tool.

Gives the impression of sticky cables but just doesn’t seem to improve at all.
The Tiagra on my commuter however is faultless, as is the new Ultegra 11sp.

I now just ride the thing & put up with the fact it doesn’t work as well as it should!

They need servicing just like forks do.
Our place does quite a few in house (the other mechanic does-I don’t touch them!)
Full strip & rebuild with a fresh seal kit usually sorts them out-depending on how messed up it is inside.

narrow/wide chainring, clutch mech & if you’re still having problems a clamp on top guide.
We’ve got loads of people racing GE with that set up & not having any problems.

pure quite right, they aren’t bad at all for what they cost.

Have their limits, but cracking value

They;re all crap, will promise the moon on a stick, but struggle to deliver a shitty stick*.

(*Just my personal experience obviously, other people’s experiences may differ)

Ignore what they say/promise, as it just won’t happen.

Your mech hanger looks to be at a strange angle.

The Stereo’s have an unusual hanger-that’s perfectly normal on one of those.
Chain length in theory looks a fraction long, but I wouldn’t worry about it & unlikely to cause a problem-better that way than too short!
    *edit*
Please take that shock boot off-they make me want to cry with the damage they can cause!

Either missing the little spacer/washer as above, or the lip seal on the free hub body isn’t seating properly.

You’ve done well to only snap one spoke on those wheels in that time scale.
A good friend of mine has snapped five so far in 1000 miles & still be refused a replaced wheel!

I’ve run Schwalbe Ultremo ZX for the last two years.
    Would I recommend them? No.
They feel great, roll superbly, really grippy but last about 5 minutes before they either cut up, fall to pieces or blow off the rim.

I’ll be going for Conti GP4000’s next time.

No idea then without seeing them.
Sounds like a trip to TFT/J-Tech/Loco/Sram et al.

Grooves inline with the bushes i common when they’re starting to wear.
tbh sounds like they needed servicing before now.

Sticking at various points through the travel-did you lube everything up before you put them back together?
I haven’t had it with the latest RS, but with some forks I’ve found it to be as simple as lack of lubrication, either in the lowers or on the glide rings etc.

Midlands XC for me both days at Eastridge.
XCE on Saturday & XCO on sun.
Perfect weather & one of the bets xc courses I’ve ever ridden on Sunday.
Sore & battered now though from my rag doll impression on the last lap!

Yes, you most definitely do need the washers!
Do you think Shimano would include them if they weren’t?!

They must be one of the easiest brakes of all to fit-a joy to work with.

Eastridge is crap, in fact the whole of Shropshire is, better off avoiding if I were you..

I bought the set a few years ago-hope your inserts work better than mine did!
Let me know how you get on, mine were all slightly the wrong pitch-even double checked the part numbers & what I ordered & had to then chase the threads out in the inserts. Less than ideal.

I run them on my cx bike & did do for most of last season 44/36 & haven’t had any problems at all.

Are there any ramps on the inside of it? Sounds like it might be a SS ring?
Is it a 10sp ring but on a 8/9 groupset? Clutching at straws TBH, as difficult without actually seeing it.

I sold a customer his first ever MTB at the age of 65 when he retired.
He then rode six days a week for the following there years-I then left that shop, so have no idea if he’s still riding, but assume he is.
This was around six years ago & he was riding unto 30 miles a day, all off road & all over the UK.

Thats how I do mine-no problems at all-Just don’t stack them so close that you can’t get the one out that you want to ride!

Depending on where you’re heading there from, why not have a look at the Long Mynd on your way there/back?
Some really nice natural stuff there.

    Not a problem then.
We’ve fitted Hope Hoops to 6 so far iirc, all with the x12 142 adaptors.

    Assuming it’s a Stereo from the last 2/3 years, they’re 142×12

Check the bearings when you get them out, as some Superlight’s have bearings with a built in shoulder on the inner race, so you might struggle matching them up from a ‘normal’ bearing supplier.

    Yes.

You’ll struggle on a couple of them without the proper tools because of the shape of the frame.
If you try sockets/threaded bar/vice etc. you’ll run the risk of damaging the paint ( not massive problem if you’re having it painted) the bearing getting jammed as it tries to come out at at angle or damaging the seat that the bearing presses into as it won’t press out square.

Brass nipples-ideally prolock, or use something like spoke freeze.
Nipple washers would depend on the rim specs & can sometimes affect the length of nipple needed from what I’ve found in the past.

Check closely that the axel hasn’t started to split around where the allen key goes in.

I’ve had that in the past, leaving tiny split marks, expanding the axel making it a nightmare to remove.
Hopefully it won’t be that but it’s worth checking for.

It’s campag-what the manufacturer says will work & what actually works can often be quite different-it is Italian after all!

    based on what? cars?
Based on over 10 years in the bike trade as a mechanic.

Indexing wise, I’m afraid I don’t know what else to suggest as it’s usually as straight forward as anything else.
Assume you’ve checked the obvious such as wheel in the dropouts properly, mech hanger is perfectly straight, correct chain etc?

Put the spacer behind the cassette-problem solved.

Indexing wise, 9speed campag is about as easy as it gets IMO. Could it possibly be that the cable is the wrong side of the clamp on the mech or cable kinked?

Yes they are waterproof & guaranteed to be.
The big hole at the top lets water in though, especially if it hits your leg & runs down.
Test them by standing in a bucket & see if they leak.
The only place they tend to go is right on the toe, but that’s usually due to long toe nails perforating the membrane.
