    Scott, Ray and Sam

Aaaaaaah! That’s why it’s so easy to turn the stickers into “SAM” – which suits me as it’s my name too 😀

Bucket bongs before breakfast followed by carols and presents.

Perhaps a little graffiti in the afternoon, the streets are quiet.

Pretty sure you can just format it as NTFS on the PC and then read and write from both machines…?!

Make sure you warm up – in commuting [especially if you tend to run a little late] its tempting to set off hard and fast. This tends to make your muscles really sore, so make sure you start off easy and warm up before putting the hammer down.

always finish on a full burn

Ensure the fire burns right out so there’s no tar left in the flue.

*I can’t believe I just commented on a wood-burner thread, I think I need to be banned from STW*

As above – sack that F+C off and order a curry from somewhere in the vicinity of Bradford 🙂

    So, in conclusion:

People do it, usually cassettes or derailleurs. However the grease in cheap forks is probably more stinky than chain oil.

Don’t do it! Cheap forks are often greased with cheap grease high in volatiles. This will certainly stink and perhaps could damage rubber in the seals of the washer. Just clean it out with white spirit etc and then regrease.

The round one could be slingshot shot, made of clay:

It’s my mother that’s the archaeologist, but I remember these were produced in great numbers, masking them a relatively common find. Certainly I saw a few around Maiden Castle in Dorset.

    Schweet.

Those Xeon’s in Takisawa2’s suggestion would crunch some good numbers, though the singlethreaded will be well behind a modern machine….unless you OC. 5675’s are good for about 4.2-4.4GHz, probably not on that motherboard though :/

I suppose the problem here is whether your business will let you purchase used machines/parts…

Oh well done on finding the poem, Ian.

Gosh I am impressed I could remember that, it was heard on a latenight edition of a radio 4 poetry programme in about 1999.

There was another good one called “My Black Triangle” but its rather off topic for the thread.

Gotta go, going to try to convince my girlfriend to let mine off the leash this morning 🙂

If you have to render out then weight threads over clockspeed. If you always work in a viewport then weight clockspeed over threads. Cinebanch single- and multi-threaded numbers are a good way to choose CPUs for CAD.

4 Core and Hyperthreading as a minimum, SSD and 32GB of RAM would be good.

    Protips:

8 physical cores and 20MB of cache for <£100?! Xeon 2670’s go on ebay for peanuts. You can slap them in a dual CPU build too 😀

    6 cores for overclockers – 4.2-4.6GHz : X79 Xeon E5-1650 fully unlocked and cheap 😀

This is all most excellent stuff. Sorry I didn’t get back yesterday, was tad busy.

The plan is to use a software driver/x-over so that all the stereo signals are not sent out as stereo, but are modified before output to become 2 or 3 frequency bands and then sent out over the S/PDIF as 4 or 6 channels. The amp is a Cambridge azur 540R v2, which has a built-in DAC. So it’s going to be used a 4/6 channel amplifier from the digital input in alone, making it pretty much a poweramp – I’m guessing the PC will have to handle all the controlling, which brings up the issue of fan noise, but that’s not the most pressing issue.

The foobar2000 plugin probably would work, but is presumably limited to working only when I play files using foobar, not DVD’s from VLC or gaming or whatever.

Anyone else have any ideas how I can do that?

PS – yes I know a few things come up if I google it, but very few people are using such a solution, and I would love to hear from anyone here who has or might be able to guide me to setting it up as well. I have a very limited internet connection so don’t want to download huge programs and or break my windows install and have to reinstall everything – it took me 75 hours to download DOOM!!

FFS don’t pair a 1070 with anything less than a 4GHz quad core. 6600K with a mild OC should see you fine.

If you’re not in a great hurry, AMD Zen should launch in like, March or something.

I hear that for streaming YOUR games live, that a 4-thread chips isn’t really cutting it [unless you’re playing ye-olde games]. Most recent games will be expecting 4 threads for themselves, so streaming might introduce stuttering. Maybe a secondhand hyperthreaded chip would do fine, you should be spending most of your money on the GPU anyway.

Braid is shit – use a solder sucker. Also – make sure you have a wiping sponge – this is NOT a regular sponge, it must be designed as such or it will melt.

I am assuming your capacitor is:

*Of the same type [electrolytic/ceramic/tantalum etc]
*Of equal or higher voltage rating
    *Of the same capacity/value
*Going to be put in the same way around if necessary [nearly all electrolytic caps are polarised]

If I were you I’d definitely practice – just get yourself an old circuit board with similar things on it and practice removing them without buggering it up.

    Tip:
Don’t fight it when removing – if you wrestle too much [joints cooled/ leg jammed on hole etc] you can strip the traces off the board.

    Bonus tip:
When you’re all finished apply a good amount of new solder to the tip, dabble it in the liquid clean solder and then flick/wipe it off. You can do this on cardboard, and means the tip will finish with a protective coating of solder and flux and not rot.

I struggle with long waffle but:

if you can expand the RAM – do it yourself.

Buying RAM from apple is like paying for a nuclear reactor to be decommissioned – very very very expensive.
