Tell you what – while you’ve got it out add a grease port 1/2 way through the width of the body. That’ll make them reliable!

My friend seems fairly keen in theory.

LoCo is p’rolly right – but what’s the air pressure?

An inch is too much. Solo air forks had a tiny bit of play vertically – it allows the pressure past the plunger and equalises the 2 air chambers IIRC.

    LoCo?

I have a couple of these
775 series hubs and they do indeed have different bearings etc then previous ones.

Most other Shimano front hubs use 9 bearings, these use 11 and I guess they’re a different size.

Anyhow – that link above will take you to the service pdf for those hubs, so take a look. I think the giveaway might be that they use a hex key to unlock the locknut, not a cone spanner.

For quality I’d get a Tissot Quartz. If you can find one for £80 you like.

Also look at Skagen[/url] and Swatch [H/T Kukonaya]

I’d just like to chip in that I have owned two Automatics for the very reason you describe. Sadly the white faced one I posted before was stolen…

I tried Casio, and then the 3 HK made fakes all of which were beautifully made, ran within a minute a week and cost £40 each!

Finally I bought another Tissot to replace the first, but after a couple of years I decided that it was frivolous of me to own such an expensive thing when I am a student and struggling for money. So I sold that too, at a 66% loss…

Now I have another Casio, not quite as nice as nice as the first. Again with a screen and hands, 100m waterproof, accurate as anything and has several useful functions including moon phase [for my cheap telescope] and tide – set to Falmouth where my mate’s moored. It even tells me the temperature [bloody hot] and graphs it!! And it’s also got clear hands for at-a-glance reading.

It’s been an interesting journey, but I’m sticking with my Casio. The cheap folded steel strap rattles – which the Tissot’s never did :(

I totally get the desire to own these extraordinary works of engineering art, but I just don’t think it’s for me. Can’t justify the investment.

Tell you what though, A Casio doesn’t make me punctual ;)

Yeah, that’s awesome. How to pull it off though…?

Maybe I should take some style tips from kukonaya

I have folding Armadillo Crossroads and they are v nice but seriously soft compound – I don’t think they’ll last very long on the road, but it might just be the folding versions that are like this.

I’d stick to less treaded tyres than the Crossroads, but on gravel Cityjets feel a bit sketchy to me in the turns – hence suggesting something with a little tread and a rounder profile [CJs are a bit triangular, which is quick but when you bank the contact patch can be very small] – like standard Marathons, or Pluses.

When I was a sprong in Cornwallshire some twunts threw a full can of Coke at me as they sped past in a car at 50+mph. Missed the side of my head by a couple of CM.

I think it might have staved my head in if it had made contact.

sure – but it’s sentimentality and not a practical decision

try wearing your automatic for a few weeks when riding your bike and see how well it keeps time then

It is extremely clever, for sure.

It is also utterly outdated. Technology has moved on, though it may be physically featureless as you say, it is vastly more practical. While the Antikythera Mech is astonishing for it’s age, what it can actually calculate is now the work complexity of a musical birthday card.

See Colossos vs Bombes, throughput of GPUs, the internetz etc etc etc

What? Yeah I love re-arranging me equations for fun…

EDIT: I hope you’re riffing of the mechanical watch theme.

So, uh, what’s everyone’s take on 18 carat gold ones then? Those are impractical to the extreme, and there is no more engineering in hat that a steel one, in fact it probably harder to form the steel. And diamonds?
