Have had : iDrive and AS-R.

Now only ride Steel* HT MTB and 2x fully rigid multi-purpose bikes [1x Steel*, 1x Al. and both hub geared]

    It’s not a lot, no.

If all the other parts are the same, I reckon you could level the score by fitting it with folding tyres, lighter wheels make a surprising difference.

Oh sorry, I thought you meant you had two to choose from buying.

I’d guess you need to assess the reach. It’s often the reach/tt length that bugs girls on boy’s bikes. Whichever will give her the better positioning and fit. Bung wheels/forks/pedals on both in turn and ask her how they feel?

IMHO – whichever’s cheaper, she’ll have outgrown it in a month. Not that I’d recommend being tight, but they are both nice frames so put the change in the 14th birthday present fund 🙂

    Sorry but that =

If you just want to listen to the recordings from the PC then I understand if you don’t want to shell out for a record deck and other bits [which, by the way will need to include a purpose-built stand for the deck – that can be a >£100 easy]. Do you have any other HiFi gear, will this be in addition?

If not, I suggest, again, that you make a deal with a friend who has the kit already and use his/hers. Where are you based and how many records do you want to copy?

    gofasterstripes

Yes, you have to play them. £50usb TTs will sound pants.

Better get a well regarded deck, like the Planar 3, with a small good preamp and listen to them.

Google the terms/brands in my earlier posts for more…

    I GTG, sorry.

Laptop and [normal amplifier] inputs will be around 2V AC maximum – “Line Level”

Turntable cartridge outputs a few millivolts, so you need a PreAmplifier to boost the signal to Line-Level.

As I suggested, if its only for ripping the discs, you’d be better using a mate’s deck, all set up etc. Save the audio as FLAC, Apple Lossless, or at a push AAC 320kb – vinyl sounds good, don’t waste it!

IIRC the wikipedia article on Turntables is a good place to start.

JY – if theres no pre-amp in the TT then she needs one. It’s not Line-Level output!

My dear – you will have to do quite a bit of research! TBH if your budget is <£150 or so then borrow a TT [or pop ’round with your laptop] because if you use a crap TT you’ll havd a crap sound.

Hi-Fi is full of snake-oil, to be sure, but TTs are exquisite engineering, and must be in good condition to get a decent sound and not to bugger up your LPs. Sadly there is no quick and cheap way to help you out.

Ebay duude, just set a reserve and list on a free listing day?

I’ve bought a few txtbooks from the ‘bay, usually paid £10-20 I think, and that wasn’t anything that unusual.

Just to add my voice: I worked in a travel/outdoor shop. Haglofs is generally regarded as about the best stuff you can buy, and yes it’s expensive.

    TK Maxx? Haglofs? Daaaayym.

Trousers for our “engineers”* – shedloads of pockets, kevlar stiching, double thick knee, elephant-ear pocket liners, kneepad pockets etc etc etc.

Also damn warm to wear sitting in an office!

*read fire suppression system installing “engineers” – and don’t call me out on the naming, it’s what the Co. and the staff call them, so in this case, to me, they are Engineer’s Troos.

All I’m worried about is parts. What about newbies? We’ve gone from 1 wheel size to 3 for MTB. Sounds to me like it’s just going to leave a lot of people really confuzzled. What about all the bidet budget brands – Carrera etc – are they going 650b or 29″? How many tyre choices am I going to have in a few years with 26″*

Also I am basically pissed because I finally built my dream wheels a couple of years ago** and the frickin’ things are only going to get more difficult to get tyres for now, esp. cheap ones – cheap things only exist due to volume production and the more “standards” there are the less volume of production of each type OR manufacturers are just going to scale back their range to only include the popular shizzle. Either way I see my options reducing and my wallet taking a pounding [so I won’t need to buy that fancy slimline wallet I keep seeing advertised here anyway]

    * This also works both ways – what budget tyre for 650b – “I’m just getting into MTB, I love in sweet sweet mountain terrain and the only shop near me sells 3 types of tyre for 29″, one Tub and one 26″ with a centerline the vicar uses to visit his goats. Woe is meeeeee”

**321 Disc Ceramic, DB Black DT’s and Blue Hope Pro2’s in 20mm and Bolt-on. Yes I know they weigh about as much as a walrus and I don’t care one bit because they will never ever break unless I crash so hard I die. And then I doubt I’ll care.

I wouldn’t buy Win 7 machine with 1GB of RAM unless I was planning on buying more ASAP. Check also that there is a free slot to add more otherwise you’re up a creek without a paddle!

I find this interesting. What actually happens if you spend an overlong period? Just getting reversed via an ‘plane isn’t 2bad? No porridge involved?

Also – both the hour and the thread are probably crying out for this:
