My better half, took several trips and several months for them to diagnose so got to stage three and a 10cm invasive tumour, mastectomy, chemo, tamoxifen, exemestane and a whole bunch of other drugs. She lost her hair ( and had men in suits laugh at her in hotels because she was bald)
Interestingly ( and you and your wife be told a lot of theories etc which you should take or leave as appropriate) the thing that really helped was a naturally occurring product t not legally prescribed on nhs- cured chemo sickness and associated aches and pains quick sharp.
Now going to be on meds for donkey’s years but better than the late alternative, she’s an absolute machine and now writes for huff post from time to time- your wife may find this useful :

yeah that sounds like what I had read tbh-
re big roads – do you mean busy or just bland featureless boring shizzle as opposed to little country affairs?
I had read something about a trail that runds the length of the west coast and wondered if it was doable on a road bike as I’m apparently 80 mils north of Biarritz- a trek on mtb but doable on a roadie…
    cheers for your help all.

All the obvious spots have been listed but –
Nelson seems to have been eclipsed over the last 10 years but there’s a great scene there – have a look at the old Dirt films to give you an idea- some great dh and xc routes – get a copy of the Kennet bros. book – it’s pretty comprehensive lists the kilddevil (hated that fecker), third house Peking ridge etc mentioned above.
I spent a month riding round there – loved it.
Port hills around Christchurch are great – haven’t been since the quake but I hear things are ticking over quite well and the community is strong as ever – get to some of the hike shops as there’s always regular rides out. While you’re there you might want to consider an hour’s drive to Methven to ride Mt (s)Hutt as there’s some nice bits up there (was on their enduro stage race)
You’ll love it, won’t want to come home.

My wife’s oncologist is into his research – part of Nuffield, teaches at Addenbrookes and Cambridge- he’s signed my wife up to a couple of trials , tweaked standard meds for maximum effect. He specialises in a different area but he’s well connected so would point you in right direction – search for Dr Russell, Addenbrookes, Nuffield and you’ll find his deets.
    Good luck

This struck a chord with me having lost my Dad and Aunt to Cancer and my wife is currently in remission.
It struck me that the Lady discussed and some others may find this useful, interesting, inspiring or just a load of old bollocks but it’s kind of relevant either way:

Agreed – having visited both Mtbing in Florida is not worth the hassle-
Hawaii is not as straight forward as you may think- you’ll have to pick your Islands as some are exclusively road focused- you’re best off having a browse of some of the US forums and trying to pick up on a group ride or finding a bike shop that does ride outs – esp as some terrain is inaccessible or protected.
    have a look here:

Brilliant dragon. Haven’t heard that old chestnut for a while. Well done on a highly original, swooping generalisation; I applaud your open mindedness and forward thinking which is not doubt a well formed and reasoned argument with a breadth of evidence to support it.

(I will say here and now that this is a rambling comment with no real outcome)

    Wow.

I haven’t posted often on this site over the last few years…but I’m compelled to do so by this thread. having worked in sales for the best part of ten years and then taught for five I like to think I have a fairly balanced and rounded view of the whole public/ private sector thing.

I suppose it’s good that people feel so passionate about the debate. However to try and demean one another’s careers or chosen paths is rather counter productive.

I’ve worked in multi-national blue chips, recognised as a “high flier” on one hand and experienced corporate bullying and mismanagement on the other.

I’ve seen exceptional talent and utter incompetence in both. Businesses and schools are as unique as the people that are employed by them, the challenges faced are diverse and varied. it is impossible to make sweeping generalisations about either.

Anecdotally do I find teaching easier? No but despite having taught in inner city schools and another that is currently enjoying extra attention from HMI under Ofsted’s section 8 it’s still more enjoyable.

Would I recommend the profession in its current guise? It depends on your values and how well you can manage time and stress. I suspect that recent grads may get one hell of a shock, behaviour and respect seems to be generally declining. An expectation that if a student doesn’t achieve his expected level of progress they haven’t failed, the teacher/ profession has. Having said that, if I had stayed in my previous career I can definitely see the potential in me “going postal”.

Do I really have thirteen weeks holiday? Yes but realistically once you take out time for marking, planning and prep it’s probably about half of that, still not bad but I suppose that’s reflected in the poorer levels of pay generally experienced than compared with the private sector- I’m not complaining I see it as a trade off.

Do I consider myself so stressed that I’m about to leave the profession? Nope, not one bit but I know plenty of incredible individuals who are on the brink through no fault of their own.

To sit here and bleat on about which profession is hardest, who has the biggest bleeding heart story doesn’t help anyone. I would hope we can all agree that we wont the best for our kids and I’m sure that most rational people will admit that there is indeed some sort of issue with education in this country. Until that is recognised, identified and resolved by the powers that be then this country is in a precarious situation. No doubt more and more of Deev’s employees will leave school without the proper skills and our economy and society will be the poorer for it.

Yet Education could learn a lot from industry and a lot of the dyed-in-the-wool teachers need to get on board with that and embrace it instead of being so resistant. Ofsted need a rocket up their backsides because until teachers are no longer forced to teach to tests this unpleasant situation will not improve. Teachers need to be empowered, until parents and students respect them for the professional that most are, we’re on a hiding to nothing.

I’ve got a degree, I’ve got a masters, I’ve got various other bits of paper warbling on about this and that so I am not and will not be treated like “day care” by parents who are, by all accounts pointless. There are signs up on public transport, in doctor’s surgeries, God knows where else saying staff have the right to work without facing intimidation, aggression and abuse so why is it ok for teachers to put up with it everyday in the playground, classroom and at parents’ evenings? This country has some serious issues with general behaviour and morals and if that is not dealt with at home, early on then I hope Her Maj. brings back Military service.

Most of all our kids and their education should not be used as some sort of political tool, they’re too important for that.

Lived just outside and worked in schools around Northampton for the last 10 years until Christmas. Some nice bits- decent road riding once outside of the town itself.

Northants is full of nice villages but as soon as the towns start getting sizeable they’re best avoided- Northampton, Wellingborough, Rushden… lots of unemployment and an increasing amount of individuals with ever decreasing amounts of respect or awareness of others.

some decent bike shops within reach Wellingborough cycles and AJs are competent, Gorilla ( bit further to drive) is mainly road but full of pimp stuff and Grafham cycles have a decent range and mechanic.
if your mtbing as people have said – head to Woburn, Chicksands, Aston or Cannock- all 30 mins-60 mins drive.

No, I believe that’s me bredren nouveau, so still scores comedy points; no 47 should look like some ones taken tin opener to his face…. Or just that he can’t ride a bike and has face planted… Earlier description works best for me though

nah he was just there, we weren’t “honch” enough for him. Met him in Maccy D’s later…I could eat more than him….
I have strong suspicions he was a tool. – he used language like “honch” plus he ran risers with bar ends… his bike was an abomination…. ah yes with triple clamp sids… oxymoron if ever there was one.

what about the nukeproof mega ? think its a bit lighter than the bottlerocket (certainly the older ones) but similar to both bottlerocket and blood
I loved my BR but it was too heavy for all day use

I thought they had a ltd production run of roadie frames a while ago- the roadie- o ?
doesnt matter if the 5 has bottle racks or not- if its carbon tubed who knows what the tube profiles are and therefore whether or not they can fit bottles on a carbon 5.
