aye, that makes sense. Though I have a 203mm rotor up front and soon got through my avid pad.

It does stop like ****, but I don’t have a 160mm (for e.g.) to compare it to. Well, I do but it ain’t avid so wouldn’t be a fair test.

Though, I never ran out of power on my hardtail with 160mm rotors. Though, I probably never went as fast as I do on a fs.

End of the day 203mm looks cool on the front of your bike! Most of the time I don’t need it, but sometimes I guess it gets me out of dodge with the stopping power.

With boobs theory, imagine how good rim brakes would be if they used the same materials to stop as disc brakes! Damn!!!!

So, the moral of the story is! **** not doing downhill stuff! A little bump can kill you so go for your life!

    Keep riding 😉

Am I being stupid or are the larger rotors just so they don’t heat up as much and cook the fluid in the brakes? the smaller the rotor the hotter it will get as it is touching the pads more frequently.

If it’s the size of the rotor V brakes should be **** mint cos they have a huge rotor to stop on (in the dry)! I know this is crap, but u see what I mean?

like a previous post. If you wanna stop better a good pad and disc are the main things. If you do big stuff you want a bigger rotor so the breaks don’t cook and stop working.

Please correct me if I am wrong 🙂 If so, explain how a bigger rotor diameter makes you stop faster. To me its one material connecting with another. If it causes more friction it will stop faster so unless you rag the breaks you don’t need bigger rotors.

I know! How lame am I???

Is there a direct flight from Wellington to Coed y brenin? Haven’t been there yet on the pitch just the old hardtail.

Might get 5 minutes riding in until I’m back on the old plane!

Hmmmm, a pitch meet up eh! Didn’t realise there was a bit of a fan club for the bike 🙂

Might be a bit tricky to get back from NZ for the meet though 🙂

Here’s the old pitch in Rotorua bike park

Great tyre in dry conditions. Got em on my pitch. Heard a lot about side wall issues, but not had any problems myself. Ride some gnarly stuff so they do get a workout.

I have noticed they are a bit slippery in wet conditions so have swapped the front for a maxxis swampthing.

    hope that helps “)

Rubbish! when your hands are cold on the trail turning that cheap crappy dial is **** annoying!

My revs on my hardtail had the proper dial and it’s sooooooooooooooo much better I spent a tiny 18 quid to save my finger tips!

If you look inside both dials, the proper one is sealed so it doesn’t need greasing every ride. I wanna ride not spend an hour greasing every bit of the bike on every ride! Sorry 🙂

If you are 5’11” a medium is right on the money for you. Large might be a bit big. Depends on the riding you like doing.

One word of advise if you get one. Get onto chain reaction cycles and order a U-turn knob. The one that comes with it is sooooooooooooo crap! the bearings went rusty a week after getting the bike and made it unusable. For about 18 brick you can use it properly with a proper knob. I always use mine if I see a steep incline coming as you can turn in on the fly. Just wish there was a button to pop the sus all the way out when it goes down hill. Come on Rock Shox!

The bike is so much fun for so little money 🙂

Nah, just shows I’m in NZ 🙂

Rained sooooooo much when we went into the forest the camera stayed in the bag 🙁

In Queenstown Greg took us down rutty stuff the sheeps make so not much room for error as it was really over grown. Great fun, especially when we reached the old gold mine. It’s like it was purpose built for bikers. Nothing too technical but bl*!*y good fun 🙂

U tried greg from fat tyres in Queenstown? Some great riding round there. Was having too much fun to stop for pictures 🙂

tell your mate to stop being sooooooooo tight! The amount of money he will need to spend to fix the bits falling off means he would be spending more anyway.

Find somewhere to rent and go to the trails. He will know if he wants to continue and invest in a real bike, not some rubbish for going to the shops.

You could get him to get a bike from amazon for £100 and send him to fort william! Just make sure you get it on tape though! Jeremy Beadle would give a little thumb up for the footage if he was still here!

God, and I thought I was going for overkill with padding on rides! Think I might have made a wise choice looking at some of these!

Thought we might have a few cuts and grazes on here, but wasn’t expecting deleted scenes from saving private Ryan!

you might have to dig deep and buy her something she really wants for putting up with your bikes.

Also, mention she doesn’t actually need that many shoes so I’ll scale down when you do! She might understand that 😉

yeah, they might be a bit overkill as it won’t all be downhill dodgy conditions.

the swampthing was £15 so not the end of the world if I don’t like it, but heard lots of positive stuff about them for winter conditions.

heard the wet screams are for really bad conditions. Kinda the next step up from the swampthings. From what I have read.

it won’t be a tyre I use all the time, just something for when its wet at the weekend but I wanna go out on grade 5 trail stuff. Grade 5 is basically the stuff before downhill over here.

cheers guys, managed to find a swampthing over here for about 15 brick so not a bad price huh!

will be using this once the wet weather kicks in!

cool, I will check em out!

Not expecting dry grip trailmoggy, but there are differences in tyre types. If not we would all just run slicks if the grip was all the same.

don’t mind spending a little bit on them as I’m in NZ at the mo and the trails here are so much tighter than home. The native bush trees are cm’s from your bars as you fly by. Need grip 🙂

    get the tool box.

    remove brakes.

    put in bin.

    new disc brakes on.

    put tool box away.

    job done 🙂

    totally agree!

I got a gt avalanche 2.0 when i got back into biking. Frame is great but I have pretty much broken most stuff. Front mech = dead, rear mech = dead, drivechain = dead. Forks crap = rock shox revs etc.

spent some money on it but it got me started. Better getting started than waiting months to buy a bike with still no experience.

If you love bikes you will spend money on it guaranteed! But that’s part of the fun of owning a bike!

Last thing. Don’t bother trying to replace bits on your drivechain. Just look after the whole thing best you can and run it into the ground. Then replace the whole job lot! I learn’t the hard way.

    Good luck 🙂

tic tac! that is pretty mad!

quick question. How did you do the paint job? was it pretty easy?

Thinking about doing my GT ht as its just boring silver. Doesn’t have to be perfect but don’t want it chipping off and looking a mess. + is it easy to get the old paint off without mucking up the frame?
