I’ve got other sets of Hope Hoops which have been totally trouble free. Just this set breaks when I’m not even looking at them.

I’ll try again with the pic. Followed the instruction for Google Photos image shortening but it isn’t working… Try Imgur…

@P-Jay I believe they can pay and are defaulting through choice.

To sue them, I need to be able to serve papers. Without an address that’s impossible. Likewise getting money on the basis of a court judgment.

If I find them, then both are possible, but much more likely that they’ll resume repayments.

It’s contractual, enforcement isn’t the issue and I’m sure they’ve got enough to make it worth following. There’s been no credit activity.

@mattyfez – they owe me, but what’s the difference?

I like T1000’s idea! Except there’s no way to get in touch directly.

With Stans Crest, Arch and DT Swiss rims, a lot depends on the tyres. I find the newer ones better.

I’ve struggled with non-tubeless Continental (a visit to the garage and 50p well spent) and Kenda.

Maxxis non-tubeless were better. Schwalbe and Maxxis tubeless-ready have been fine.

    I always inflate them dry.

I got the bits together for a coke bottle inflator, but since I bought a Lezyne Digital Overdrive pump, I haven’t needed to put it together. I had an Edinburgh Bicycle Revo before, but the Lezyne shifts more air and is better built.

Nearby, Mabie House Hotel is good.

Castle Douglas has quite a few places. I like Designs Cafe and Gallery and a new bakery, The Earth’s Crust in St Andrews Street.

In New Galloway, the new Cat Strand arts centre is very good, well worth a visit, and The Smiddy next door is also good.

I think the French buy wine based on region ie. Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone, Alsace etc and the supermarkets aren’t particularly selective. They have some very cheap wine.

If you find something you like, fine. Otherwise I think Waitrose have a better ratio of price to quality.

There are good wine merchants, but they are likely to be at least as expensive as the UK for the same wines.

Fullers earth might take the oil out. What’s Ronseal oil anyway – Tung oil? Stick to one type of oil.

I’ve been running the biggest tyres in my choice I could find for twenty years, and the lowest pressures. Over that period tyres have got bigger and pressures lower.

I ride in a bike hash, and many riders are on narrower tyres, and higher pressures.

Anecdotal but these days the speed difference is such that on a gentle off-road downhill I’m constantly dragging the brakes to avoid running into them. Typically hardpack and sandy.

On the road I’m struggling to keep up.

These days I’m on 2.35″ on the same narrow rims, and 2.5-2.6″ on wide rims. Not sure how the latter works out.

My conclusion is that lower pressures are faster off-road, and I haven’t found the limits yet.

As for those who’ve thought about it and think different, do what you think works.

I prefer to fit my theories to the evidence.

Neither do I; I find 64Gb is enough for me; I’m using 19Gb including 8Gb of apps.

Currently I’m using about 1.5Gb of a 3Gb System partition (aka RAM), so that’s likely to run out faster than the storage. If I’d had the option for a bigger RAM at a reasonable price I would have probably taken it.

    Ang moh then :)

If they like cheese I second CaptainFlashheart’s suggestion – maybe Keen’s/Montgomery’s cheddar and Colston Bassett/Cropwell Bishop/Stichelton stilton. A visit to Neal’s Yard if you’re in London?

AFAIK quality cheese isn’t available in Singapore

Why run a dinner plate on the back when you can run a smaller chainring on the front?

Spiders are limited to 30T but Cinch can go down to 26T.

Only downside is fewer teeth = faster wear.

What’s your contractual position if they fire you? Why not ask for that plus as redundancy?

    Oh and a good reference.

Meantime just do your job as best you can.

What are your chances of getting another?

I got the Xioami Mi-5s instead of the OnePlus Three. Spec is similar, but the Xioami cost me around £175 new. Maybe more now.

It replaced a OnePlus One which died, and I prefer it to my Samsung S7.

Last autumn I got a Xiaomi Mi-5s for £175. Great spec for the money. I didn’t much like their Miui software but after some faffing around I’m running Lineage OS which is great.

    Better than my last S7.

Scaffolders contract is with the builder, who’s not getting paid. So the scaffolder is not getting paid either.

Are you sure you’ve ended the builder’s contract cos they’re acting like you haven’t.

Suggest you tell the scaffolder in writing that his kit is trespassing on your property; give him seven days to remove it or you will remove it and dispose of it at his expense.

If he were to damage your property, you’d have a claim against him. A record of the present condition will help you.

I mention that because blue cheese – Stilton and Roquefort –
are high in histamine which causes hayfever-type reactions.

Antihistamines address some of the symptoms, but can cause their own problems whilst leaving others unaddressed.

Try the sun – or any other changes you make – consistently for say a week without making other changes and see if there’s a difference.

Those of us who work indoors don’t get much sun.

    Giallograle

@Haze I’m dealing with the same thing. Try getting more sun, every day.

Yup just read ‘break in Greece…’ I try to spend half an hour in the sun, T-shirt, every day. Otherwise trouble.

Part of it is vitamin D but supplements on their own don’t fix it.

PS do you react to blue cheese, for example Stilton?

It’s a business. I’ve been downgraded twice by BA from Business and upgraded maybe once from economy to economy plus by Cathay.

I don’t think there’s a magic solution – if they’re overbooked in economy, they’ll upgrade but usually at the last minute. It may help to arrive late and without a boarding pass.

Heat it on high, lid down, but turn the heat right down as it boils. Use a fine espresso grind. Espresso is best at slightly below boiling, 97°C, and you’ll get better extraction from a slower process.

I heap the coffee in the lower part and don’t tamp as I don’t think tamping it down helps with this type of machine, but try it yourself.

@cookeaa and anyone who thinks trial by jury is unimpeachable, read what a judge has to say about the difference between oral and written summing up Nic Madge – Summing Up – A judge’s perspective

Handing out written directions seems to have almost eliminated requests from juries for reminders or further guidance on the law. Juries also seem to be reaching verdicts more quickly. There has also been an increase in the proportion of convictions. This is borne out by an analysis of verdicts in my court over the last two years.[26] In those cases where the jury were not given a typed version of the legal directions, 44% of defendants were found guilty, 47% were found not guilty and the jury was discharged because there was no prospect of them reaching a verdict in respect of 9% of defendants. In cases where juries were given a typed version of the legal directions, 60% of defendants were found guilty and 37% were acquitted. Perhaps most significantly, to date, only one jury which had typed directions has failed to reach a verdict.

A big increase in convictions with a written summing up, which I understand is atypical in the UK.

I tried to find the judge’s summing up of this case but couldn’t. Closest is [/url]

Perhaps some STW legal practitioners could advise?

the defendant had told officers he had been passing when a cyclist had been hit by a car, and that he left the scene as he felt there was “nothing he could do”.
On his arrest, he said he had heard a “cry or scream” and looked in his mirror to see a woman lying in the road.

How did he know the cyclist had been hit by a car when he couldn’t possibly have seen any such thing?

    Thanks all!

@stevextc. Priorities are to get a better fit on the bike, and lower the gearing, preferably 26t. 30t on 175mm cranks is similar gearing at the pedals to 26t on 153mm (target crank length).

Weight is a secondary issue. I take your point about square taper, but I’ve found it unreliable in use, so if I can avoid it I will – I’d rather tap a crankset than use square taper.

@dirtyrider Those Aeffect cranks look great! Any tips on how to align the pedal spindles when drilling?

It looks like SRAM NX cranks are only available in 94 BCD, not Direct Mount, which means the smallest readily available chainring is 30t – unless STW knows different?

    Giallograle

Probably aiming for around 150mm cranks, but need to do some calcs. 155mm would be a big improvement and close, so looks like NX is the one.

Otherwise chop the Zees when Highpath are running again.

    Thanks all

You may miss the culture. Expats can get pretty bored and whilst the money can be good, there’s a reason they pay.

Consider whether you can rent the house you are buying whilst you’re away; that could make a big difference to your security when you return.

Expat life puts a huge stress on marriages, particularly if one partner isn’t working and stuck at home. Separation is trickier as long-distance relationships are harder to maintain.

Your daughter, like your sister, may benefit from a better education than she’s currently getting; that also depends on her, and expat schooling doesn’t suit everyone.

Why not take time to visit your parents with your family and check it out.

If you do go, it looks like you’ll be financially better off, you may gain in other ways, but you may give up some things too.

The job you do may progress your career – choose carefully. It can be difficult to return to the UK.

Good luck and do let us know how you get on.

I’ve tried Aeropress, cafetiere and pour over filter coffee. I prefer the purer flavour of pour over, and staff at good coffee shops which offer both agree.

If you watch them you’ll see how to make it; temperature and time make quite a difference.

The Aeropress seems to have been the result of ‘theory’ taking precedence over practice.

Other than that I like espresso.

Under £7 a bottle from the supermarket, Waitrose are more reliable. Tesco and Morrison’s are a lottery. Over £10 from specialist wine merchants.

Gauntleys (Nottingham) are very good for the Rhone and other less well-known regions.

Thanks for all the input and the info.

I’ve actually got a couple of old XTR 3-speed Hollowtech cranksets which were lighter and stiffer than FSA and SLX at the time. And a near-new Hope crankset and BB which I think I’ll sell. I don’t think the chainline will work well with smaller chainrings.

So it looks like Aeffect is the winner. £90 cranks, 24mm spindle, and cinch offers a wide choice of smaller chainrings including AbsoluteBlack oval rings which isn’t available with the other systems.

    XT or SLX…

Can I use a 64bcd ring and will it work with the boost chainline? Has anyone tried this?

    Giallograle

Apparently 650g for Aeffect cranks and 680g for XT M8000 without chainrings.
