Fresh Goods Friday 640: Three Feet High Edition

As someone who has a year old English Springer and year old working cocker spaniel I have no desires whatsoever to take them riding. I’ve had more than enough run ins with irresponsible people who take their dogs out on trails and then moan when their dog gets run over.
I was at Llandegla last Sunday and I came across three dogs on the loose, not one of the owners made any attempt to pull the dog to heel or get it off the trail. The last **** was on the freeride jumps at the end and kept running back and forth over blind hills back up the trail to have a another go, 8 year old and loose cannon dog just waiting for the next poor MTBer to come flat out over a ten foot high high table top…
:roll:geordiemick00Free MemberIs it because they saw a debit to ‘weight watchers’ and then though ‘hang on, I smell a rat’ when Dominos appeared!
geordiemick00Free MemberI bought a 26″ Cube Stereo Race (now if FS section) in Nov 2010, 150mm trail bike and bloody good one.
In Feb 2011 I bought a Niner Air HT, wiped 40 mins off my best lap of Lllandegla Black
In March 2011 I bought a Trek Rumblefish 2 to replace the Cube, the difference in riding speed, grip and stability is prolific.
Let the naysayers have their say, the 29ers will have their day…
geordiemick00Free MemberOMG, the Orange County Chopper types have not entered the MTB market, stand by for all sorts of fugly POS’s at a Harley Dealer near you…
geordiemick00Free MemberJust for comparison purposes, I bought one of these:
Way more expensive than an on one but way less popular too :D
geordiemick00Free MemberPersonally after using Fat Alberts and the shoite I’m having with a pair of racing ralphs I wouldn’t touch them, get some Maxxis ones like I’m going back to.
Got 29″ Racing ralphs, ‘tubeless ready’ and with the bontrager rim strips they just wont either hold pressure, or stay on the rim. If I put 30psi they burp, if I put 35psi in they blow themselves off the rim overnight. Had nothing but bother and will be looking for a pair of ignitors soon….
geordiemick00Free MemberEr hello!!!
Just restrict the ‘hi’ screw on the front mech, no need to buy double mech or shifters then, works a treat
geordiemick00Free MemberNeeded bleeding from the box, not a big job but a job. It then stopped returning back to it’s fully heightened position, another bleed and then it stopped full stop. Loss of air pressure and when shock pump used to re-pressure it hisses like a pissed off cat….
RS said they purposely waited to enter this game late to come in with a class leading product, the only class they are leading to my knowledge is the ‘piss people off as much as possible’ class.
At £275 it’s not cheap end of the market either.
geordiemick00Free MemberAgree with ton, the constant blokey terms of endearment are getting a bit too much but otherwise a total top programme. Met him a few times at Cadwell Park whilst doing track days and he always chats to people and is not up his own backside
geordiemick00Free MemberThanks for the replies guys, few valid points…
I also wondered why they would be ‘tubeless ready’ when you then have to put a rim strip on them, which according to chevins you do, I tried without and just a valve and they wouldn’t inflate at all.
As Milkie’s identified they are Bontrager rims hence I bought the specific rim kit. They are Series 6000 but can’t find anything on them on web.
I’m not convinced with the fitment of the bead of the Schwalbes myself. I took Schwalbe Fat Alberts off my Cube before it turned a Wheel, the Ignitor LUST’s on my Cube and previous bikes have been flawless. The Racing Ralph’s have rolled really well and I’m dubious about putting anything more chunkier on incase it slows the big wheels down but I may try a pair of ignitor LUST’s now..
I wonder if the rim strip is too wide and if it’s worth trimming it a bit so the whole internal side of the rim is clear?
geordiemick00Free MemberI have a Cube Stereo Race with 3 x 10, XT shifters, front Mech and XTR rear Mech, took big ring off for a bash and still works fine indeed.
geordiemick00Free MemberMine lasted a month before breaking, my mate’s lasted a week and another mate’s lasted two weeks. Typical American product, all marketing and no manufacturing. All three of them have been sent back and all back on standard seat posts until more stock arrives in April, the posts in the system have been given priority to new sales, which is again typical American greed.
I’ve learned to get on with my original seat post and on the verge of just asking for my money back…
geordiemick00Free MemberIt travelled two hours from Wigan to On One’s place in Rotherham two months ago ‘to buy one’ and after spending an hour and a half being passed from pillar to post I was hurriedly asked to describe a spec, the lad (Ben) was nice, asssured me he had done 8ft jumps on one and was fine, the down tube has a kevlar band built into it to deflect stones/protect the frame.
I specced a beauty of a bike, best part of £1300 for a single speeder, he said he would send me an invoice to confirm build spec and exact pricing and I could order. Three times I chased them up and got two return calls about a week after the chase, still no invoice, still no order, they snoozed the loozed (lost!)
I bought a Niner Air 9 from Chevins instead, love it to bits, goes like stink and I didn’t have to beg them to buy from them.
geordiemick00Free MemberDoes anyone really expect to get anywhere near the published MPG figures?? When you look at the way in which the cars are driven to get the figures you’ll know why. It’s about a 25 mile test route driven by professional drivers who can apply a feather foot and in conditions that are perfect for the engine. There’l only be enough fuel in the car to cover the distance too.
I’ve driven a few 1.6 Diesels and if you’re the type who wants to hog the middle lane at 56mph then they’re for you, if you want to actually turn up to meetings on time at a sensible pace and not feel the need the get out the car and push it quicker yourself then get a proper diesel (2.0) and drive it sensibly. That said 1.6D I’ve driven were large saloon cars and small(er) cars like Fabia’s/A3’s etc would be better.
I have a 155bhp Toyota Avensis Tourer, drove it up to Scotland and back, three bike rack on the tow bar and one on the roof, four blokes and all the crap we carry and it still managed 42mpg cruising at 80mph , on my own at 70mph it’ll do 46mpg.
I’d still have one though over a Prius….
geordiemick00Free MemberI’ve had the same problem with my RockShoxShowerofShite Reverb….
geordiemick00Free MemberI have an Arval car and had a Lloyds, most tow bars these days don’t need a bumper cut. The only thing you have to be careful with is if the tow bar fitter uses a cheap £6 7 way bypass relay (and most do) and there is an electrical fault the dealers will blame it and you then enter a minefield of blame.
Get a car specific fast fit or plug in wiring loom and they can’t blame the wiring being cut to power the wiring loom.
geordiemick00Free MemberMy opinion is you should’ve bought one last wednesday
geordiemick00Free MemberI have Avid Exlixir CR’s 203mm x 2 on my Niner and Formula ‘The One’ 185 x 2 on my Cube Stereo, the Formula’s win hands down on every count.
They squeal less
Have better stopping power (on a heavier bike)
The pistons squeeze evenly
Have better feel.geordiemick00Free MemberBut I CAN ride my bike down steps, with 26″ or 29″ wheels
geordiemick00Free MemberIn November I bought a Cube Stereo Race and found it to be an efficent climber for a 150mm trail bike, dropped the big ring for a bash guard and found it to be heavyish on the climbs but the frame is very pedal efficient, Oranges never will be due to them being single pivot, it pivots near the shock whereas other frame designs like DW, ABP etc use other pivot points to counter pedalling and braking forces, so they make better climbers.
Last week I bought a Niner Air 9 and I can honestly say it will do 80% of what the Cube does and jsut as quick, it flies up the hills and gives great comfort for a HT, did a night ride last night and was great fun on super techy bits too, it’s propelled itself to best bike status within it’s first week of ownership and within 75 off road miles.
I think we need a full suss and a XC bike to allow us to keep our skill levels high, so my Missus is beng told anyway
geordiemick00Free MemberAhh it’s a shame I’d forgot to press start on my GoPro Andy, there was a good chance of me catching the stack on film, was only couple of bikes behind you…
geordiemick00Free Member@ratherbeintabago:
It’s fairly easy and doable has to be the biggest understatement EVER!! It’s 47 miles off road FFS!! Last year was a mega wet day and single handedly destoyed most peoples drivetrain and brakes!
geordiemick00Free MemberThey say there’s a 9 month waiting list but Skoda Warrington has about 6 pre reg’s on the forecourt, typical car dealers, pre reg them to boost demand and price, it’s a german thing..
geordiemick00Free MemberJust put the money towards going tubeless, get some UST tyres and a pair of BMX inner tubes and stan’s sealant. If you’re going through inner tubes enough to have to ask to bulk buy you’d appreciate going tubeless so much
geordiemick00Free MemberAnd a refusal to do a ‘normal’ 29er aswell
Yep by the time he realises that they’re not going to go away everyone else will have the market share…
geordiemick00Free MemberWas planning on going up next week for a bimble, is it still worth the trip? Is most of it still open?
geordiemick00Free MemberThanks for that gab344, I may just go back and do another lap and see if it changes my opinion
I can remember playing on the course at Dixon’s hollow, which was a great little skills area 8)
geordiemick00Free MemberCan’t see the point myself, other than to look like a proper tool
geordiemick00Free MemberI went once and vowed not to go back until I’d got bored of every other trail center in the country. £7 isn’t good VFM, yes you may be able to watch a film for less but cinema’s have to pay a lot of money to buy the films, pay the rent on the building, rates, staff overheads, gas bills etc etc….
Most forests have a timber income and whilst I don’t expect to ride for free £7 ‘to use a toll road’ is a pisssss take. You can drive down the M6 toll for less. And then once you get on the trail it’s one of the most boring, featureless trails I’ve ridden. Not a single distinguishable feature that made me want to go back.
That said I followed the red route and didn’t do the world cup stage but it was never pointed out well enough to give it a try
geordiemick00Free MemberAs someone who drives 45K per year I have daily interfacing with HGV’s and in the main they’re a decent bunch, they’re only doing what I do and that’s provide for their families. There are a few dickhead truck drivers but their is LOADS of dickhead car drivers.
What does piss me off is they are allowed in Lane 3 on 4 lane parts of motorways, lost count of the number of times they’re 3 abreast and everyone else has to filter around them to get past, which causes mayhem behind them, BUT, much of the mayhem is caused by **** in cars who drive at the same speed or slower and generally hog the middle lane.
It should be illegal for a car to be overtaken by truck whilst clearly not breaking down or entering/exiting a motorway. Many people also don’t realise trucks have lower speed limits on certain roads too.
But I’m fed up of having this ‘without trucks you get nothing bollocks’ rammed down my throat, I’m a salesman and if I don’t sell anything there’s sweet FA for the trucks to deliver
geordiemick00Free MemberI had a 53 Plate 2.0TDCi and it was mega quick, got 20K off the front tyres and it did 60K in one year without a hiccup. My mate bought a late 10 model and they’re still a great car. I’d go for old version.
Ford do an accessory where you take the middle seat out and attach a QR mount and have your bike in between the rear two seats.
Good car.
geordiemick00Free MemberI’ve got NukeProof Warheads with the 40mm rise, great bars.
I also have a pair of Raceface Atlas bars which are 780mm wide but didn’t have enough rise for me, they’re for sale too if anyone’s interested PM me
geordiemick00Free MemberI’m going to train to be a cycle mechanic, they can obviously afford to build a £4K bike that they’ve no intention of riding and then sell it a loss if someone hits the ‘buy it now’ button for less than £3K.
OR
Like I did last month-
Go to Rotherham, spend an hour being continuously left on my own whilst they rallied from one disaster to another, eventually spec up an 456 XT spec, £400 for the frame, £400 for the £800 Fulrcum wheels, £90 per end for the Elixir CR’s 203mm and about another grand for forks and remaining finishing kit. £2K max for a similar spec bike. And then after three phone calls over the following three weeks NOT get an exact cost and eventually go off and buy something else.
Call me silly but I think the seller thinks we all have ‘****t” written on our foreheads…
geordiemick00Free MemberThanks guys, I’ve ordered a Garmin Edge 305 with the cadence sensor and HRM so I can race my ‘virtual trainer’ and see how marginally slower i’m getting :D
geordiemick00Free MemberJust have!! Bought a Cube Stereo Race 26er in November for the bouncy stuff and now added a Niner Air 9 for the fast stuff and most other stuff, will be using it as a tool to increase my fitness.
geordiemick00Free MemberHopefully the politicians will see the Gypsies and may make an effort to move them on, the council never seem to and they’re camped outside the council offices there!
