Went for the stumpy in the end,

If anyone wants a 2010 Heckler for 1600, or a blur for 1950, then give Pearce cycles a bell 🙂

Totalshell – So where did you go in the end?

Sunday evening/night ride for me in Bringewood!

Not sure about the extra weight, the stumpy is 2 x 10, whereas the heckler is 3 x 9, Both bikes were weighed in the shop in front of my own eyes, as I wondered what the weight of the heckler was, as it did feel alot heavier than the stumpy, their was a 6 pound difference! Not sure why.

How does the Heckler feel riding uphill and teetering around, Im sure it is better DH, but how about the rest of the ride?

Cheers all, for your inputs so far.

    mmm

downhill orientated singletrack type riding (my local trails are Bringewood, Hopton, Eastridge etc..)

    Same spec

    yes and yes

    Both white

My Gut instinct is saying the Stumpy. I had an FSR back in the day when they first came out and loved it, however in my younger days I always wanted a Heckler, but never been able to afford it. My instinct is saying that the Heckler will be too much weight. Its 33 pounds over 27 for the stumpy.

I agree, the best issue of Dirt I have read. Im a cross country rider, who likes my rides to have a DH slant. I thought that this issue had some really good cross over ish articles in.

At the moment its my favourite mag. TBH Singletrack is going a bit to Privateer-ish for my liking (still really enjoy it though:)

Shed loads of it mate, Excellent singletrack in Bringewood and Mortimer forest. If you know it, you can get a 3 hour high quality singletrack ride out of it.

Unfortunatly alot of it is very hard to find 🙂

If you are travelling to the area I would recommend going over to Hopton woods, a newly restored high quality marked our red graded trail.

Just driven to Pisa and back twice in one month, using my Garmin. No complaints. My mate had a Tom Tom with him. Exactly the same untill we hit the city centres. My Garmin took us right to the hotel door, his Tom Tom didnt seem quite as accurate, it stopped one or two buildings out, or on the wrong side of a street corner. Having said that, his hadnt been updated for 3 years.

I would use Garmin, purely as they are involved in cycling 🙂

This thread reminds me of a quote by my favourite climber, Andy Kirkpatrick. He said ” climbing is like masturbation, its great fun to do, but no one particularly wants to watch you do it!”

    It tickled me 🙂

Im actually the opposite to most of the thinking here 🙁

I bought a cx bike 2 years ago (a Kinesis 5T), and hated it. When I was on it all I was thinking was, If I was on my mtb, I’d be having much more fun.

I suppose it all depends on the terrain you ride. Where I live its steep, and there’s good real mountain biking, (no disrespect to the people who have to ride on flat bridalways around muddy fields etc etc). I found that the cx bike just couldnt handle my terrain. I got it to try and add some variety into my rides, but it just never worked out for me, I always wished I was doing the ride on my mtb.

I suppose if you wanna commute/tour, aim for a specific goal like the 3 peaks then go for it. But think carefully, dont just do it becuase everyone else seems like they are doing it.

But those cube’s do look nice 🙂

The other thing I found, was that you cant just nip out for a quick climb, it tends to be a full day, or as near as damn it.

When my son was born, long days away climbing were out the window, whereas a quick hour and a half door to door on the bike fitted in quite nicely.

Climbing is very commiting in terms of the headgame, but also the time it takes up in your life.

For years I used to climb almost daily when I lived in Hope. For family reasons we moved to Ludlow 2 years ago, Ive only climbed 3 times since! Now however, I mtb 4 times a week.

Overnight climbing went from being very important in my life, to not having a place in it all.

    Funny how things work out.

I was looking at some results the other day and saw a Matt Farmer in the expert cat top 10, I wondered wether or not it was ‘the’ Matt Farmer from my Junior cat days?

Sam Humphreys – I think he is now a succesfull Duathlete

A Peugeot (cant remeber what model) in 1988, after two years of riding around the sand quarries of Doncaster I upgraded to a Diamond Back Ascent, never looked back since. Many interests have come and gone, but MTB’ing has always been number 1 🙂

30 mins stockport to whaley bridge, then whaley bridge to winnats 20 mins.

Did that route to and from work for 5 years (I lived in Hope and worked in stockport). A couple of traffic light tail backs, but nowt major to worry about.

If you allow 65 mins, just in case the traffic is v bad, it would be plenty.

Due to ‘the events’ of life, Ive ended up in a job that I hate, that takes me away from my wife and toddler every week without fail, often to very dangerous places, at all times of the year!!! However I get paid well for it.
In fact im sat in Finale Liguria now, and being paid for it, so not all bad 🙂

    OP you have no idea!

Yes mate, I have two reverbs, one for each bike.

The second one I bought worked like a dream straight out of the box, and has hard a hard winters use, and still works like a dream, however !!!!!! The first one I bought was like yours, it was solid straight out of the box (I couldnt move it even 1mm), I bled it and it sorted it out, that one needs bleeding every few weeks to keep it plush.

    I disagree,

I tried learning the guitar and struggled, being a musically untalented duffer, I got a Uk, and now am looking forward to trying the guitar again, It can only of helped, it is easier to play, but alot of the chords are the same, so a very good grounding.

BTW Israel Kam’s version of somewhere over the rainbow is v hard to master, that is the goal! Many a guitar player would fail at it.

Try this site for good lessons

    Sign up for UU+

    The lessons are free.

Im currently sat (for 2 weeks work reasons) by Finale Liguria in Italy, with the enduro course in site, and no bike, learning Billie Jean, Ukelele version! It helps ease the pain of being here and having no bike!

    Have fun.

David Millar passed me when out on my bike going up long hill between Buxton and Whaley Bridge. Very nice guy, he slowed down to my pace for a 2 minute chat, off his own back 🙂

Also got passed by Malcom Elliott on the same ride 🙂

When I moved to Ludlow, discovered that Isla Rowntree’s house backed onto mine 🙂

Try Isla bikes, the only adult bike they do is a rigid 29er, I live just down the road from Isla and she rides one all the time, shes a bit smaller than me and Im 5 foot 7. I think she would be able to size correctly for us hobbit like folk.

My mate had a medium specialized 29er full suss on loan, I borrowed it for a few hundred yards, would have been more only i was on spd’s and the 29er had flats. It didnt feel to bad to be honest, made me think that a small would be a good fit for me.

Spot on stufield, Id rather have a HT with a reverb, over a full susser any day. Just so happens im lucky to have one of each with a reverb anyway 🙂

But give me just one bike, either a full suss with standard seat post or HT with reverb, it would be the HT everytime.

Have you thought about the diy option?

I bought a practically brand new Voodoo Wanga from ebay for 500, got a reduced Blue Pig frame from my local shop for 250 quid, and Spent about 50 quid on a new headset.

In the end I had a brand new XT / Revalation equipped Blue pig for 800 quid, about a grand less than the rrp for a new fully built one.

Try something similar for your XC bike. May need to bide your time looking for a good bike to be the doner from fleabay, but worth it. I could never have afforded the full rrp for a complete X9 Blue Pig.
