HELLOOOO, I am a family man, And I work away mon to fri every week, and have done for the last 5 years. I have a 3 yr old, who is my world and a a wife that I adore. I wont get into the whys and wherfores about why I do living away thing, but briefly – Great money, gives us as a family, financial security and no money worries. My job involves me supporting our Armed forces to a great extent,- makes me feel like i have a worth, ermmmm I moved to an area, ( for family reasons) where if you are not a sheep shearer, you have no work opportunities! Plus I get most fridays off!

Anyway, back to the OP’s question – I always have my bike in the car, Im lucky enough that most of my work areas are near the classic riding areas of the UK, but this time of year means alot of solo night rides.

Im a very keen swimmer, I always choose hotels with at least 20 meter pools attached.

I;ve attempted to study for various qual’s , none of which have happened! I always end up out on my bike, in the gym, or at the pool! after doing that, and getting my tea, its bed time.

Should mentionj, that despite getting to ride my bike 3 nights a week, swim 4 mornings a week, and eat and drink beer every night of the week, I hate it! Id rather be with my son at his bedtime every night!

Anyone got any sat comms jobs going in Shropshire

Im in Finale Liguria this week 🙂

its harder to do it on force 3/4, that more closely simulates the force of water, and is what they set the resistance to at indoor rowing comps.

Its easier to pull, but its hard to get the tension to pull sub 2 mins/500 for a period of time.

I live in shropshire in a major flood zone, and I have driven through every flood Ive encountered in the last 3 years, unless theres a copper telling me to turn around Ill do it 🙂 Ive not failed to get through one yet.

However thats in a company car, in company time 🙂

I have been using one every week day for about 6 months. I dont tend to do a straight 10k straight off, but i almost always do over 10k in a session, ie 10 X 6 minutes etc.

The real test is your 2000 m time, aim for under 7 minutes, my first one, as a fit person but with no rowing was 7:45, Im now at 7:05. When I break 7 mins, I will be happy 🙂

Haha, Im a bit sneaky, but my 3 yr old loves it 🙂

Junior geologist is 4 next week, but from about 3 I tried him on Mario Kart, he couldnt get to grips with it really, it frustrated him, SO – what I did was I set up a 2 player game, I told him that he was controlling the character that I was atually controlling. Now he loves it , he thinks hes Ayrton Senna. I just pretend to be the one that he is actually driving.

Im a firm believer that British citizenship should involve eating fish and chips weekly 🙂

Worst – My local in Ludlow 🙁

Best – Rick Steins – Falmouth, or The monk fish battered from Darts farm, or the battered salmon from the Ashvale chippy in Elgin

Ive got a Golf Bluemotion as a company car, and lets just say when its up for renewal in March, I wont be having another!

Very Underpowered, and the fuel economy is not what it says on paper (unless you drive everywhere at 55mph).

Id stick with a regular Tdi, much quicker, more mod cons, and there is not alot in it when it comes to fuel economy, infact in reality mine is worse.

I am not a subscriber, but thinking about it, are their any of the t-shirts still available?

I love all bike mags, some more than others. I have to admit Dirt is my favourite, followed closely by Singletrack.
I also buy every climbing magazine. I just love em 🙂

What sort of society are we in, when someone could murder or rape your 5 year old child, and then still have rights!

I was in the same boat as you 2 years ago, I moved from hope to souh Shropshire and thought, oh my god , how us my riding going to suffer, moving from the peaks to here. Well I didn’t need to worry, in my opinion the riding here us much better , or maybe just different. I live in Ludlow, so am lucky to have bringewood 1 mile from my front door , but the tiding between here and Shrewsbury is outstanding, England equiv of the 7 stanes if you ask me. So many little quality places to ride, you will get a testing and high quality 3 hour singletrack ride out of all of them. I mean for example in eastridge you have the only purpose built endure course in the uk only 30 minute pedal from Shrewsbury.

When you get down here give us a shout 🙂

I went to Islay for a week in August with my missus and 3 year old.

    One word – Fantastic

    We stayed here

    http://www.kintrafarm.co.uk/

No mountain biking, (but I stopped at Dalbeattie and mabie on way up), but for solitude, wildlife, beaches and whiskey, its amazing.

Ive been to all the main Scottish Islands, and I would rate Islay as my fav. It just has an atmosphere that I cant put my finger on. Maybe its the peat bogs?

I had a couple of road rides on the Island with my mountain bike, but there really is no mountain biking, (if you find any, let me know 🙂 )

If you wanna know anything, like attractions etc, just let me know.

Mine is the same. Within 2 months of having the bike, the cut out has rounded off. It still works, but the material that it is made of must be so soft.

I reckon it took about 10 times of removing the maxle for it to round. The end of the cut out you use to tighten is fine, but the other side is almost ruined to the point I cant use it. 12mm Thru axles are defo the way forward. Have them on my stumpy and love them.

what makes me chuckle is when you have a ‘free range scotch egg’ made with a free range egg, but the pork is battery meat and the breadcrumbs have non free range egg content to make them stick.

KFC – Crap water filled battery meat, and bad ethics.
Burger King and MacD’s – As above
Frankie and Bennys, La Tasca etc etc – Crap food.

    French Cars – Crap.

Big shopping centres – Full of chavs
Sports Direct etc – as above

Engineer here too, Sat Comms for me. I work as a systems engineer for the biggest defence company in the world. When a new system needs installing or one needs repairing, I will go out to it. I am lucky enougth to be paid to travel the world almost weekly doing an exciting job, to some very exotic places, and to some sh*t holes also.
I could be fixing video recorders in a factory somewhere, so I count myself as one of the lucky ones.

However, I am away from home everyweek, I have a 3 yr old, so its horrible, I miss him so much in the week.

But its a desicion we have made as a family, We have opted for the way of money, and to be comfortable financially. I will bide my time and look for a similar job, where I can commute from daily, but these are rare in sleepy south Shropshire.

I would love a job in a bikeshop, or working for the RSPB, but in my life, that wont happen.

    Dont really understand why?

My 4 yr old, loves cbeebies, and Star Wars 🙂 and we still have an amazing family life. He is a very bright child. He has learnt alot from TV.

He watches it when we get up for an hour, or sometimes 2 on a weekend, and for an hour before bed. A couple that we are friendly with, dont have a TV, their child is not as bright or as literate as ours, and she really seems to have alot less knowledge of the world.

TV is not bad, its how you control it that counts.

I’d man up and keep spd’s , takes far more balls to ride sketchy, techy stuff clipped in, plus more confidence.

I ride both by the way 🙂 In winter when it’s claggy and slippery, and the millions of roots in my local woods have a thin coating of ice, I’ll be in flats , but then I’m a wuss 🙂

I just fitted in Mabie and Ae into one day, travelled up from Buxton at 6.30am. Now sat in my hotel 2 hours north of Dumfries. Its easy to fit 2 trails in a day here. Any of them will fit into 2 aday except Kirr.

Means you can get more in 🙂
