I use SRAM attack for my SLX.
Same as an X7 I believer.

They've certainly become a lot slower than they once were. I placed a couple of orders on Saturday evening and they're still listed as processing now.
A few months ago I'd have had them by now.

Can a Hope XC rear hub be adapted to take a 9mm bolt through?

I know it's only £9 but I definately don't have the time to be reading 100 pages on how to build a wheel.
Anyway my questions been answered by his front cover – shows the same arrangement as I've used on my new one, only I'm one spoke out of phase.
    😀

What seems to be the problem is that I've laced the insides of the flanges first on the new one rather than one inside and one outside before twisting.

    Chiropractor?

It's expensive but worth it. I've had a long term back problem courtesy of a really bad skiing accident (nearly broke my neck/back!) when I was 16. I've been using my chiropractor since January and it's changed my life significantly (and I'm only 21 😥 ).

+1 for the Topeak Alien 2.
Has everything you could need whilst out on the road/trail. When I'm out on the roadie I'm usually alone and on the mtb I'm usually the one that gets lumped with all the repair work.
I got mine really cheap from eBay about a year ago.

    Finally done.
Completely stripped and cleaned, new bearings should be arriving tomorrow. Mmmmm, new hub.

Cheers for the help. Managed to get them out with a skewer and a hammer, still took a fair bit of force mind.
Next question: how do you get the bearings out? 😕

Watched that video already, he just seems to pull it out easy! I've tried unscrewing and have been pulling like buggery with a pair of pliers.
    Still no luck!

Can this be done with a Hope XC rear hub?

All good, I found me a video on YouTube. Apparently it's called 'ghetto tubeless'.

    Bottle of Joe's sealant = £12
    2 x BMX inners from Tesco = £2.42
Trip to pal with compressor or garage = pennies.

    Sorted.
Go on then, I'm tempted to give this a go, what exactly do I need and how do I do it?
Guessing someone on here's already explained it so a link would do!
Assuming it'll work fine with 317s (I'm only skinny)?

You can get replacement bearings for about £2.50 each for decent doubled sealed ones. Think they're 6804.

Wow, didn't realise it'd be such a grey area!
Think I'll try turning my floodgate right down and so how that works for me when I get the new Pikes set up. Pro-pedal seems to be a given to have it on all the time when climbing though, I'll try just softening the pro-pedal up a notch.

    Also,
Does anyone that's taken the pop-loc lever off their bike want to sell it to me? I now have 2 pairs of forks and one lever (guy who sold me the Pikes had lost it).

I've just bought some Kyle Straits. Twatted my knee off my bars while climbing last time I was out (hit a huge root, bike stopped, I didn't, error!) it didn't hurt at the time but a few hours later and the next day my knee was killing me.
Not tried them out properly yet but they seem very comfy. Cheapest I could find them was £32 (google product search it) for medium size. CRC have some small ones for £30.

I had a similar problem with my RS forks about a month ago now.
The seal head had done something funny and drained all the oil into the lowers, bad times.
Took them apart, gave them a good scrub up and down, put the back together and voila – just like now.
If you have the same problem I did just be aware that the oil goes all over the place when you take the lowers off, especially if they're stiff!

rs – he is right – the rotation of the mass can be ignored unless it is accelerating. going uphill at a steady speed nothing is accelerating

    Well kind of…

When you're going up hill gravity is constantly pulling you down and your wheels are constantly wanting to decelerate. In order to overcome this deceleration you provide the acceleration force with your legs (at a constant speed these forces are balanced).
Unfortunately for us the inertia of the wheels is a contributing factor to what we are pedalling against. Thus at constant speed the rotating mass still has an effect on how much effort we have to put in.

EDIT: Also, if you think about it, the bike constantly accelerates and decelerates throught the pedal stroke. If yours doesn't you'll be given a new gold necklace in 2012.

SS Kevlar are good (funkin awesome) in the dry – otherwise stick to sintered.

What are they like in the wet?
I was tempted by them but heard they just fall apart.

I have them and they're great.

    Thanks for that!
That's the mag ones you've linked to there, just bought a set of alloy ones from them for £37. Can't complain.

I had a similar thought about this the other week.

One of my mates at uni has a standard off the shelf MTB (will have cost him about £250 at a guess) but he won't take it anywhere it might get dirty. I asked him why he didn't buy a road bike, seeing as he only rides on roads it'd be the much more sensible option. His response was that 'he didn't buy a mountain bike, he just bought a bike'.

Now I don't know how much cheap road bikes are but if somebody is buying a bike why has it now become standard to buy a mountain bike (even for road use)?

I got my first road bike last year when I was 20 but when I was younger I had bikes for jumping and the likes so never saw much use for having a road bike.

I've taken my helmet off for climbs when it's far too hot.
Could never justify not wearing one when going faster though.

I broke my femur – just fell off side ways like 'bikechain' at zero mph on a trail. Think what would have happened if that had been my head with no helmet?
Just plain stupid to equate going slow with the need for a helmet. Its there to protect you that one time you need it. I wear mine, always.

Surely if you fell off sideways at 3mph you'd just put your arms out to take the impact? It's a natural reaction, that way your head doesn't get smashed up.

Thought they were meant to give you about 130g? The 12g cartridges are specced to give 90psi.
Is this just not the case?

Are you trying to tell me I should be able to feel when my road tyre hits 130PSI? I commend anyone who can squeeze a tyre at 120PSI and confidently say, 'nah not quite, you need another 10 in there'!

It's easy enough to do but wouldn't wanna do it while riding.
It's a stop, get-off, twist, get back on and go affair.

I have Anon Realm skiing goggles.
Left my contacts at home (error) on my last ski trip and fortunately these fit over them like a dream.
They aren't cheap but they're very VERY good goggles.

    YELLOW!

I'm a skier and in white-out conditions (ie when you can't see your hand in front of your face) yellow enhances the contrast.

    Have a play with this:

Mavericks lock DOWN not OUT… IMO a MUCH better lockout system as it usefully lowers the front of the bike to help with climbing, whereas IMO a conventional lockout will hinder not help climbing because it leaves the front end too high. Lockouts are only any use for riding road miles IMO, whereas a lockdown is pretty useful for when you need to get up a very steep climb.

    Ah, that's pretty clever.
Would be interesting to see whether most people find LO a help or hinderance when climbing. Personally I always LO but only 'cos it's there.

What's wrong with the LO on Revs?
