Might bump into you, I’m off to Flaine the same dates as you

There’s a couple of us from here leading our college trip from Durham uni so if you see a group of about 50 Durham students feel free to come grab a beer with us!

I’ve got a pair of ‘Strange’ grips, XT shifters and a CatEye Strada keeping count.

I find brakes usually help too!

MTB: Little as possible – Superstar Grips, X9 Shifters, SLX Brakes.
Roadie: Far too much – Ultegra STIs, Shimano Flightdeck, Dahon Biologic iPhone case, Cinelli gel strips and Cinelli carbon tape.
SS: Bar tape and a brake lever.

    Thanks!
Just saved an extra £16 on an i900 that I was gonna buy this weekend anyway.
Lever version for £128 – not too shabby at all.

So on Stans rims you just need a set of the Stans valves and the rim tape and thats it?

Is it ok to run normal non UST tyres like that?
    Yep, most tyres will work.

Bloody hell, at around 45s that looks almost like a photograph!
    I’m impressed!

Major dilemma in that I’m at uni and my copy is going home. Bad times, should have been delivered now though!

+1 for DealExtreme as z1ppy posted.
Just got mine and it’s bright as hell!

Use the Stans tape for 2 rims and then sell the rest on. That way 2 people get the proper stuff for half price.
It’s specced to do 5 rims so will be enough for someone else to do theirs too.
I bought mine from Tredz who seemed to be the cheapest at the time for the thinner tape.

That could well be the one although I remember it being quite a bit narrower than that (it was 3 years ago though). Was certainly a challenge on skis when you’re trying to turn small and not leave the group behind.

As for Chamonix you’d probably love it as boarders. The off piste is is immense and as mentioned above the Grand Montets in Argentiere (10 minute bus ride from Cham) is brilliant.

Queue wise in France I don’t think I’ve ever waited anything near that long (bar Cham) but lift queues can certainly take a good 10 minutes at times and a little longer at weekends. Tignes/Val isn’t bad ‘cos you’re straight on the chairlifts up the mountain but in Cham the whole resort has to take a cable car up to the ski-area which is at best a nightmare!

If you’re still deciding where to go in January I’m off to Flaine 1-9th and will report back on snow conditions/resort etc. Out of interest, anyone else there then? I’ve been told the skiing/boarding is meant to be a little bit on the special side for the better riders, is this right?

+1 for Tignes if you’ve never been. I’ve been twice and the ski area is amazing, make sure you get passes that include the whole Espace Killy. Plenty of Pistes to keep you busy but where you’ll really benefit as boarders is the off piste.

Best days skiing of my life was from Tignes to Val off-piste through a gulley. If you ask a guide where it is I’m sure they’ll know it – it’s the route where you have to unclip your skis/board, drop them down a hole about 2 metres high and then use a rope to slide yourself down another hole!

    Brilliant!

Alternatively for France look at Chamonix/Argentiere (same ski area – great for off-piste again but you’ll need to use the free buses to go between the various areas of the resort), Alpe D’Huez and I’ve always wanted to hit the 3 Vallees but have never been.
Compared to these (Tignes included, speculating on 3 Vallees) I thought Les Deux Alpes was crap so you should really enjoy them!

    Did somebody say white Meta?
Not ridden in it’s latest incarnation so no proper pics yet but…

It’s got those shit white rims again though 🙄
Hopefully this’ll sway you into going as white as possible. I think it’s fit anyway.

On a side note, love that Nicolai!

About 10min per gb IIRC on my MD80’s

As far as I’m aware for the quality of the video you’ll get a lot more than 10mins per GB – probably more like an hour per GB

I have a pretty bog standard cat eye wired cadence computer on my turbo trainer bike – about £30 I think from Wiggle. Personally I hated having the front wheel low so I just propped it up on a brick (the turbo is in the garage).

I was planning on using my regular roadie with the Turbo and just dropping it in, I don’t really want to wire up another computer but looks like it could be the only option!

I use Garmin bike sensor with Forerunner 50 and HR mon. It automatically uploads to PC, plots a graph with HR, Cad, Distance, Speed, date. You ride based on BPM rather than speed.

I really don’t need anything nearly that complicated. Distance is all I really want and a cadence display would be good as well.

Are there any other options out there?

    Cheers guys.

Craghoppers are a good cheap choice.
Nike ACG are really good though, I’ve used them for coxing in (at 6’1″ I’m a bit big for that but never mind) and they’re as waterproof as you like whilst still being a really comfortable fabric (ie. not plasticy).

10x 500m flat out, 1 min rest – yer right….can you leave me your bike in your will!!

Only takes a minute and a half to do 500m! 1m rest is plenty, at least that’s what we do in our boat club!

I have an SLX shadow rear mech available if you want it?
Medium cage and in pretty awesome condition, done maybe 250mi and is all still straight.
After about £28 for it posted.

    Hope floaters.
Save weight on the rotors and save weight by having to file down the caliper mounts. Win on both fronts?
    They do look nice though.

If you’re using a rowing machine for interval training I’d keep your rests well below 2 minutes over 500m reps.
As a rowing coach I’d recommend 10x500m with 1m rests between going flat out each time. Should take no longer than half an hour and you’ll be spent!

Anyone had any trouble with using the o-rings to mount the light? Do they keep the unit secure enough during use?

Cheers, those pics look pretty awesome.
Shame it doesn’t look like you can get the helmet mount from DE.

Can anyone with the top light comment on how weatherproof it is?
I don’t want a light that’s gonna die on me during use.

Pro 2 and Crests are 1461g with DT Revs and 1595g with DT Comps according to the DT Spoke Calculator.

I’m trying to decide on spokes so have these figures in the calculator already btw, I’m not that bored!
Can’t wait to get mine built up!

    gcaster

DT Revs are stated as for XC Racing use only.
I’ll be taking the bike to the lakes with me and hammering down Walna Scar every time. That’s about as much abuse they’ll be getting regularly (along with general trail centre use) but the bike may accompany me to the Alps next summer and I don’t want my spokes snapping on me!
Having said that, I am only about 65-70kg.

What axles would people recommend. At the moment I’m leaning toward either a Ringle Stiffy or a Superstar hollow one. Anyone know the weight of the Ringle axle?
    Any thoughts.

Yeah I’ve had a google and found your thread on mtbr.
From the sounds of it you guys are using them from some pretty intense DH stuff.
I think I should be fine with the Pro 2 and if not, I was warned! I’ll definitely be avoiding the rear maxle lite option though, major design flaw there!
    Cheers for the advice.

I asked what hub as I’ve now broken three Hope Pro2 axles running 12mm on my Nicolai. Two with maxle lite in a couple of rides and one in three months with a BETD bolt.
With a pro2 go 10mm is my advice.

😯 Say what?! Anyone else suffered this? That’s now added another concern to the list!
What kind of riding do you do? The Nicolai is a lot more bike than my Meta and I’m only skinny. A little bit more info on this would be grand!
