if he’d stop relying on awful impressions and reduced the amount of time he’s talking by about 10% he’d probably be ok. always seems like he’s not quite sure what he’s on about to me

he’s probably the only radio DJ who advocates cycling to work too – his story about bumping into chris evans parking his ferrari when he was going to lock his bike up tickled me

got mtb middleburns on my vaya running 5-arm ATB 110CD triple chainrings. works perfectly. as they’re square taper had to make sure i got the correct bottom bracket width for mtb chainline cranks. also as the frame is disc/135mm rear the mtb chainline works spot on. if that PM frame is 130mm the chainline probably won’t be spot on, but should work none the less – you could maybe compensate by spacing the cranks/getting a shorter BB if square taper if 2.5mm out bothers you/your gear changing! :)

reuse old bar tape on top of bars/in the drops and taped on with electrical tape for comfy palm areas. i used planet x stuff as i picked some up when i was in the shop in barnsley, pretty good for £3 odd

at the other end of the scale – old michelin All Terrain 2.4’s on mavic 719’s, slacker than a fat slag from middlesborough who takes it up the wrong ‘un. that bad that i needed help to hold the tyre on the rim to inflate, and the tyre rotated under heavy braking ripping the valve off 6 times in one ride!

i’d go for pea gravel on a geotextile weed proof layer. my brother has bark its practically decomposed into compost (great for raised beds!). if you have lots of cats about buy a dog or one of these – endless ammo!!!

thats nice of them. worth checking the axle spacing, headtube, seatpost and front mech mounting too in case they’ve changed

i took a cable lock on my first bikepacking trip – never again! camping out of eyesight, or just in the middle of nowhere (my strategy) helps. also clipping it to railings outside shops with helmet straps helps as a deterrent

i used to take all the foam out of the vents in my oakleys/drill extra holes in the lenses – worked better for riding but would only ever put them on just before starting a run/take them straight off at the bottom too to prevent them getting too misted up when stopped

32 – 2 extractions not including wisdom teeth which are also extracted, maybe 10 or 12 fillings, 4 RCT – one of which shattered on an olive stone and then got promoted to extraction :(

thing is a LOT of people always say i’ve got nice teeth as they only see the front ones which to be fair aren’t bad… luckily they can’t see the ones at the back!!!!

salsa vaya – mines a tad longer than my old cross check geo wise. in fact what am i on about. the cross check was more fun to ride so try a straggler!

dont discount rigids, i have a fortitude and with the rigid fork and 2.4inch tyres its very capable (geometry helps…) and i would be happy riding it at any trail centre and 99% of bridleways. gets a bit of a hand full of really rocky terrain which is the downside, but weight and reliability better than any sus fork! not sure i’d go with 29+ front/29 rear as that means 2tube sizes etc. also heard from a krampus owner that the tyres that came on it were paper thin and expensie to replace. if i was you i’d go rigid till you decide on your ideal/high end sus fork, save buying a compromise fork till you have chance fo maybe try a few

pikeys in a van turned up at a friends house whilst they were working on it/had garage open etc, asking about buying tools on gumtree, friends said they didn’t know what they were talking about, nothing for sale. pikeys left after giving the house/garage a good viewing and that night the garage got broken into and loads of tools nicked. coincidence? i don’t think so…

also we used to get it at our old flat (tyneside upstairs/downstairs type), every other week or so a tipper van would go down the back alley with 2 lads on the back looking over the fences/walls into gardens for stuff to nick! good way of getting rid of a washing machine tho…

interested in peoples bike cage solutions – how they were made/materials etc for beefing up my shed. any pics?

my mate has my old voodoo wanga. still a bit gutted i changed to 29’er as i did so much great riding on mine. reckon 650b would have fitted it with the dropouts back as plenty of room at the stays

have a large chameleon and although it aluminium and don’t care much about wheel sizes, that thing is RAD

missed the strava heatmap thing but i’ve just had a look at the woods in my area and they’re lit up like Beijing from the ISS at night :D i’ll be busy over summer…

but my favorite way to find trails is spot the exits/track the tyre prints (like a pretend north american indian trail tracker!). out on sunday me and a pal just rode up a path i’ve seen on my commute to be greeted with a nice wooded area with lots of singletrack making a figure of 8 loop, plus a line with a few small-mid size jumps and one beast of a drop into a bomb hole which must have been a part of a mine. about 7mins ride from my door! :)

for that sort of height you really need to get someone who knows there stuff to look at it (ie: civil/structural engineer). they can then advise of costs etc, but i’d imagine that won’t be cheap if it needs replacing! good luck!

East London won the dubious title of unhappiest place to live, with residents complaining of a lack of neighbourliness and said they were unhappy with the way their home was decorated.

well here’s a starter for you east londoners

harrogate is a funny place, it’s the posh bit of yorkshire and as outsiders can’t afford to move there no wonder all the residents are happy! :P

reckon you’ll be alright, i have 35mm tyres on 719 mavics and theres enough clearance to get my fingers around the tyre! think the frame clearance is designed for 45mm wide tyres, however cant comment on minimum tyre width would work on a 23mm rim as not tried that

it may not be the most obvious or well trodden tourist area but we live in the Derwent Valley in north county durham and it may be worth looking at based on your bike-centric needs:

    1) lots of off road NCN cycle routes connecting to Newcastle, Tynemouth (beaches/nice coastal town), Durham, or up up onto the moors via the C2C route see here for Sustrans map mountain biking on hexhamshire common, chopwell, edmundbuyers/blanchland, hamsterley nearby etc
    2) next to north pennines, also derwent valley is an area of high landscape value and a lot of our friends comment on how nice it is so can’t be bad…
    3) 45mins drive to Tynemouth, 1h and a bit will get you up to the northumberland coast for empty beaches
    4) Beamish oldy worldy outdoor museum near Stanley, Hexham and Corbridge good for fancy shops etc, Gibside @ Rowlands Gill, Alnwick castle/gardens, Durham cathedral and lots of castles up in northumberland may 1h or so drive

however the main towns are utter a-hole of places (Consett/Stanley etc) mainly due to being ex-mining areas, but there are plenty of nice villages/pubs and campsites in between! also it’s pretty hilly! :-)

i thought the rules of enduro was that everyone rode the same trail, including the ups, for the whole way round? i suppose cos the climbs/links aren’t timed people will disregard that rule if they see an opportunity to cut the course

saying that i did the NDH enduro at hamsterley a few weeks ago, pretty chilled out event and don’t think anyone would batter an eyelid/give a toss what route you took to the start of the sections

since i see this everyday (view when i turn my head to the right) it could be one mine. sadly most of the actual castle/walls demolished by the victorians when they ploughed the trainline through… (the castle keep in newcastle)

bamburgh is probably my favorite although never been inside, just like looking at it from the beach/whilst eating our dinner in the camper at sunset :)

went to harlech castle on the way back from the dyfi, that was great too although we nearly got blown off the top

a trail in chopwell woods was recently booby trapped with lots of small trees which have been pulled down across the trail every 4-5m for the length of it, some uprooted and some snapped – utterly ridiculous!

quite often find branches/bricks/rocks across trails at ground level – they just make more trail obstacles to negotiate/add to the mix, but the high level stuff especially wire/rope is mindless!

burped mine a few times but never bad enough to be classed as a failure – imo great value tyres
