Used to commute everyday from Putney into Central London. Used to come across an oldish guy on an old steel framed racer. He wore old Lycra and a classic cap. Used to hear him coming as he was always shouting at drivers and/or banging on their roofs. One evening caught him up in some traffic the followed. He was fast. I was fit in those days and laid everything out keeping up with him. Just before Putney bridge I thought I’d better do my turn in front so put a big effort in to overtake. Then had to stay on it out of pride. I remember going over Putney bridge my heart rate hit 200. I went right, he went straight on. ‘Thanks’ he shouted, and pedalled off seemingly ok. I pulled over and was sick in the gutter in front of some startled bus passengers. I miss biking in London.

Interesting stuff. I think 1lb off rotating weight is disproportionate though, as it must be worth more than say 1lb off the frame weight. Tell you something though, its more fun buying new bike bits than saying no to a cheese straw.

Standing by the side of the road with my brother looking at the map deciding where we had gone wrong, car pulled up and chap climbed out. Asked us if we needed directions. Thank you very much. He helped out and then with a cheery toot toot drove off. Sorry to say it was in France. They love their cyclists there.

My lad has been playing u9 contact at school this year. Half the kids wear caps. Almost all wear the padded vests. I’m neither for or against but I think the vests help with the impacts as their technique not always outstanding! I read ‘controlled’. I see very physical – 3 punch ups this year or rather bout of fisticuffs. Some of the boys are very physical and some are unbelievably big for their age. I would probably say let him wear what he wants so he feels happy playing. If you played would you wear armour and a scrum cap!? I would.

In my view worth it to occasionally see those subs but I love the comment about letting one off to get money’s worth!

As an Architect it really bugs me when people who draw plans are referred to as “our architect”. To be an Architect in the UK you have to be registered with the Architects Registration Board. If he is an Architect then you will have a written appointment with them which will have a complaints procedure including being able to complain to the ARB. They will also have professional indemnity insurance. If he’s not an Architect, but does work like this a lot, he may still have insurance. That’s that rant over with. Although your project may be within Permitted Development it is always good practice to apply for a lawful development certificate. If nothing else it’s good to have if you ever want to sell your home. If you don’t get permission for opening windows you could consider a MHRV (mechanical heat recovery ventilation in lieu of the opening windows.

I did 15 miles each way for three months a few years ago tues, we’d and thurs only. Amazingly was only rained on once during those three months. Absolutely loved it. Felt great at work. Was as fit as I’d been for ages. Would love to be able to do that again. Probably helped that I knew it was for limited time though (and no rain!).

I have a lab. 3 years old. I ride for about an hour max. Take water and collapsible bowl with me in summer. Only ride at quiet times. Thought at 20mph she was flat out, then she saw a rabbit! She cuts corners and waits at the side of the trail for me to go past. Helps to have something on her collar that makes a noise (her dog tag rattles on the collar buckle) so you know she’ s behind you! Lost her once, fortunately some nice mtb’ers found her and called my wife: “hello, we’ve found your dog”…….. Oops.

I usually find it helps to have the BB in the bike first as I think it will be really difficult to install the BB now. 😆

Instead of lifting the floorboards in your house why didn’t he get access through the ceiling of the flat he was in!?
    Edit:
And while I’m at it what about your ‘fully managed’ letting…. sounds like your agents need to be earning their fee!

I used a Pletscher stand when I used to have a trailer bike for the kids. Worked really well but don’t know if it would work with that Kona.

We have an xc90 it’s been fantastic. We get 30 mpg on variety of driving (I’m tight so light with throttle!) and its done 3x skiing trips. Amazing how much stuff it holds. I would say on that budget if you have a good garage/Volvo specialist nearby maybe ok. Ours is a 06 and just under 100k miles. We looked at both smax and xc90 and decided on ’90 as it seemed to have better reputation for longevity. Having said all that I still get in it every day and think I should grow a beard. And well done to your daughter.

Sticker it with ‘This way up’ stickers but put them upside-down… This will ensure the cake arrives perfectly presented. And whatever you do don’t write ‘Fragile’ on the box.

1998 kona explosif 853. Still ride it occasionally and amazingly it still has the original bottom bracket. I can’t imagine how many thousands of miles it has done.

Big piece of cardboard. Works brilliantly unless it rains in the night! My wife’s freelander has a heated screen and it’s amazing. I find if I spray de-icer on the screen (if I’ve forgotten the cardboard) it immediately mists up on the inside and then takes ages to clear.

    Well said aP (above).
Firstly I would ask if your architects really are Architects. Many people call anyone who does drawings architects. You need to be registered with the ARB to call yourself an Architect. Architects don’t do structural calculations anymore as they are not insured to do so.
Siloseven makes a good point too.

As for £250 to do some drawings, that’s fine. If you want to pay about the cost of a decent seat post for something like that then you are right, a technician will do. Thats not knocking Technicians, many are excellent and have a good knowledge of regulations. Do you prefer to see the practice nurse or the doctor? The legal clerk or solicitor?

Obviously I’m an Architect so will protect my profession. You should have an appointment document that is clear on what will be produced and how much the fee will be. I agree with aP’s final paragraph. Best to talk it through. Your appointment should also have a complaints procedure if you are not happy.

I used to do 600miles per week in a Subaru legacy. 60mpg very comfortable quick enough and safe in every weather. Doubt you’ll get one for £5k though. Would recommend a focus. Big enough and safe enough. To be fair these days pretty much any car would do. I used to do 450 per week in a 1.1 mk2 fiesta when I was young and skint.

You should still have a cross ventilated space of min 50mm above the insulation.
