I think your meaning Esk Hause and Black sail pass,Both excellent descents, the only problem is Black sail is best done (imho) from Ennerdale towards Wasedale, meaning esk hause is done as a climb and Rossett Gill as a descent.

Both got affected by the weather in December and there are a few deep gullys in places, but not in a way it would spoil the ride. enjoy

My neighbour had issues like this, the garage said it was related to a wiring fault under the drivers side footwell, caused by water ingress from a leak on the rear light cluster,is the carpet dry? apparently it is a common fault after changing a bulb.(just done a quick google)

Theres a permissive trail thats often missed just out of Seatoller, Turn right through some large slate gate posts, this trail is technical but a good challenge to clean, up onto the top path and then joins the castle cragg descent.

Its a brilliant route but ideally best done in dry conditions, I prefer to start from Ravenstonedale as the climb from Sedbergh is a killer first thing.

Its heavily damaged on the upper part but the lower bit is ok, its nowhere near as good as it was, but some bits are re appearing as more people walk it.

The Northern ones not to bad in good dry conditions, there are three gates to go through and where the track goes left (marked on the map) you need to remember to go straight on, once you get over the summit the track gets better at Greggs hut and develops into a Landrover track. from memory its 13kms 9 miles of very exposed wilderness riding, you need a good day to do it, I would recommend nipping over Crossfell summit and dropping back down to Blencarn village, its at least a 4 mile descent and the longest i can think of without lots of walkers and gates enjoy nows the time to bag it before the bracken gets high

Love mine, very capable in the lakes, great all rounder but well suited to fast flowing single track

Thanks for the replies, The strut is still in, both lower pinch bolts are slackend off and ready to remove, the front wiper scuttle, wipers and various bits are also off, however access to the nut and rod is difficult, I have sussed the socket spanner size i need but the damper rod is the next issue, To be fair it was dark last night and i am working outside with hand tools, Ill see if i can borrow a cordless impact gun (i have no air) from the local garage this morning, spinning it off sounds worth a try.

It is a mc phearson strutt and it will be stripped out on the bench, with a spring compressor

For what its worth i have just blead up the rear brake on a Kona process (third time lucky)and seem to have got a much better lever, I put the bike in a upright position so that the lever is at the top and caliper directly below, then i fitted a rockshok blead kit syringe (with o ring) into the lever/resevoir, Yes they fit!,After a while, and by tapping on the hose and moving the lever up and down on the bar small bubbles started to flow into the syringe followed by a bigger one.The lever felt much better straight away, having the rubber O ring on the resevoir is key here as its a visual guide to releasing trapped air.

my girlfriends Kona has the problem in the rear brake, I followed the XT Tech Video on “whispers”the MBR site, and it has helped a lot, although after reading the above posts i do think there is a case for warranty replacment as it is dangerous if you are not aware of it.

Relativly easy? I guess Lonscale terrace,(behind Latrigg) or the Allerdale ramble from Grange would be ideal

Boxelders route gets my vote, be aware you need to access Askham from the A66 at Brougham though the crossings are closed at Brougham Castle, Eamont Bridge, and Pooley Bridge.

I use TFR (Traffic Film Remover) its really designed for proper car washers but at 15 to 20 quid for 25 litres it makes an excellent substitute for muc off and so much cheaper.

I buy it from a local TMS car parts supplier.

I made a clamp that holds two bikes slightly at an angle, theres no need to remove the wheel and it will work with all wheel sizes.(Merc vito Dualiner)

The Bridleways from Elterwater village into Great Langdale are all easy for kids, follow the unclassified county rd (white rd on the map) to the old Dungeon gill pub to add a bit of mileage too.

I would do the yoke/ill bell from Garburn option as nobeerinthefridge says,if you look on the map theres some handy singletrack to the Northern (kirkstone pass side) that misses both peaks and stays lower down, much quicker way of getting to Thornthwaite Beacon, be aware after High street and especially this time of year it can be fustratingly boggy in places making progress slow on skinny tyres, descending from the knott, Angle tarn,Boredale hause but heading west towards Hartsop/Brothers water would be my choice on a x bike,Heading back over Kirkstone pass to finish, enjoy.

Hellvelyn Sticks pass is a must do, Scafell is a waste of time, but the descent from Esk hause to Styhead pass into Seathwaite is superb.

Postieriches pub crawl^^^^^^^^^^ would be Epic too 😉

Its usually one of the bearings partially seizing, sometimes you can get away with stripping the outer seals off and repacking with grease. But i guess lots will just ride the bike until it frees itself off.

Replacing the bearing is probably the best option

Any ride when the Autumn colours are at their best, the lakes are stunning on blue sky days like this.

Just been taking it for an episode of Gout In my foot, it helped with this but created a bad stomach during the night, also my appetite has been reduced with a bloating feeling, not taking it now thank goodness.

In my experiences of past rides its a good idea to start at Gatesgarth farm Butteremere, the Warnscale pass descent seems to be the most likely to trash mechs, wheels tubes tyres etc, and would be a better end to the ride, I have also noticed this ride is more enjoyable for riders the second time you do it, wether this is because you can pace yourself better on the day, or just have a better line choice, i am not sure, previous experience of lakes riding is always a good idea before taking on this one.

just a suggestion though, and mechanicals, and “having a bad day” are possible on any of the descents

I was lucky enough to be involved in the feature for the magazine,

From Wasedale Head we took the Main Bridleway towards Styhead, but stayed on the lower path along the river, The magazine has showed the route wrongly using the Bridleway left of the beck/stream (middle one) but we actually took the one on the right of the beck.

The main reason for this is to avoid the loose, but more direct and very busy with walkers bridleway, its a slightly more interesting way up in that it zig zags as a climb, and in my opinion a nicer trail too, with some technical single track on the lower sections.

I would avoid this option in winter/wet conditions though, we had dry conditions on the day but there are some boggy bits on it.

I would recommend dual ply tyres too, the whole route stretches bike set up to the max, superb day out though you will enjoy it.

    Thanks again for the responses,

I was on Holiday in the West coast of Scotland when it first started, I had convinced myself i had broken a bone in my foot as i did stumble onto my toe (wearing fell running shoes ) also i was dehydrated on the same day, and ate a seafood meal that evening, I guess i was eating well all week really but at the time only had a dull pain and no swelling, the day after.

Its gradually got worse over the last few weeks, hopefully the meds will kick in soon.

Bassenthwaite village,Uldale, Caldbeck, Hesket newmarket, Mungrisedale, back road to Scales A66 down to Threlkeld village Keswick main road back to Bassenthwaite, The a66 is a busy road so you could do this anti clockwise to get it done early

Ive been running Mavic 719 rims Hope Hubs (26er) for at least 8 years now, its a combination that seems to find the right balance between strength, weight and durability.

I have ran 2.3 width tyres on the above too with no problems, the Stans flows type rims may be the way forwards though, with a trend towards fatter tyres and puncture protection systems like pro-core requiring a wider internal rim width.

Haven’t read the whole thread but i would say the sign is not officially endorsed by the national trust as its impossible to define a Bridleway through signage alone, and remember an OS Map is no representation of a right of way, or an accurate way of following what is actually on the ground.
