Me and a mate have 08 Fives – mine’s a pro (F32), his an AM (F36). I reckon now that you can get ’09 Maxle Revs or 15QR F32s they’d gain a bit of the 36s infallibility but maintain the weight of the old 32s/revs…

Not more than 30 PSI… at your weight, you could go quite low but if you’re running tubes you’ll start to get the sidewalls crumpling…

This is tricky though, my ‘Quality’ Specialized track pump would have me believe I’m only running 20-25 PSI most of the time although I’m not sure it’s correct.

Basically, the supposed correct thing to do is to run your mud tyres hard to cut through the mud – thing is with Ashton Court, it’s so rooty and eroded that running high pressures makes it a nightmare to ride there. I find mud more predictable than wet roots so chose a nice soft compound floaty tyre like Kenda Nevegals/Blue Grooves which work on the roots and then try to deal with the mud instead.

BG front. As a trail centre or stony hard ground and loose surface (not so much mud) tyre, a 2.35 Stick-e BG is about the best front tyre there is IMO. Find the Nevegal on the rear too draggy and heavy so run a 2.1 High Roller on the back (I’m skinny like the tyre so no worries there)

Been trying all sorts on the front of my Orange five to shave a bit of weight but after refitting the BG recently it had been sorely missed.

Just don’t over inflate the ‘rakers as they’ll kill you on the roots.

Thing is, these will clog just as much as everything else – I’ve actually been running a small block 8 on the back as I’m so fed up with the AC mud and if you have no tread, it can’t clog…

Surely it depends on the degree of rise in the stem too?

Don’t assume you’ll see another rider. I’ve done many night rides at CC and often me and my buddies don’t see another rider…

Park at the visitor centre NOT the main MTB car park as you’ll be locked in…

Just picked up a ’09 Genesis iO – getting good reviews and it’s a lovely bike!

Ride 3 out of 3 but there’s literally no overlap in them.

    Orange 5
    Genesis iO SS
    Cervelo Soloist (roadie content sorry)

I was umming and ahhing over a bigger travel bike, maybe 7″ like a Patriot but having spent most of Jan on the iO, doing CwmCarn this weekend reminded me how much bike the 5 really is and if I can be bothered to drop the saddle a bit (I’m always arse in air being quite short but with long legs) it’s amazing how fast you can huck it down stuff…

My ’08 Toras advised 15 hr servicing intervals I believe…

Of course the scrotes had that bike before I could see if it was needed…

Seems a bit hit and miss… a mates 36s died totally in 6 months, my 32s are a year old and pristine (plenty of use in all conditions)

Anyone know if this is ongoing for a while yet or will it be open by the weekend?

lol I remember the gadget show testing the Trek Session 88. They tested it by buying a second hand muddy fox out of the paper and then racing the two on a ‘DH course’ (read fireroad) and attempted to judge whether it was worth spending the money on the Trek…

    Total joke lol

From the website it appears to be just External Floodgate (race) vs Internal Floodgate (SL), weight is the same I think…

    Edit: beaten to it…

molgrips, I think that was more my point – it’s not so much having niches that bothers me – I’m actually fine with xc, trail, AM, freeride, 4X and DH as concepts within biking and they are useful, particularly with regard to categorising bikes…

It’s what you’ve said along with further sub-niching of the above where it gets silly…

Clearly then, there are no bitter, insecure, xc jey boys on here?

Well I actually ride an Orange Five and wear baggy 3/4 lengths and ride allsorts so I’m not a stereotypical XCer.

It’s just terms like AM and Aggresive XC and Freeride lite *yak* bring up visions of people on giant 6″ bikes of death pottering round trail centres – which I’m fine with, I admit I’m probably too slow for my bike – but when you hear these same people talking about the extremes of their riding, it just makes me feel kinda dirty using those terms.

I think its fear of being seen as, and or repuslion by “those other types” which leads people to get their backs up. Careful you dont say you’re “stoked” or someone might think you are trying to be cool, while you sit astride you 3000 pound bike with carefully co-ordinated anodized bits, in your nicely matching riding gear. At the trail centre. Which of course you can do on a rigid single speed……but you’re not trying.

There’s actual AM (Whistler Fall segment on Seasons DVD?) and then there’s mainstream AM which is basically red runs at trail centres… lol

When people ask what I ride, I kinda just feel like saying ‘bikes’

Whistler? All mountain? You mean the seasons section where Cameron McCaul, Steve Peat, Shandro, Vanderham etc are ripping down the hillside together doing insane jumps, tail whips etc all with amazing style and speed? Not to muddy the waters but I didnt think lift assisted dh/frreride trails counted as All Mountain. Surely, all mountain is just getting up the hill (almost as fast as the xc guys) and getting down it (almost as fast as the dh guys)?

At the end of the day as someone above has said – it’s all just shorthand.

This is a sport in its infancy really and we are irrelevant in terms of pushing trends. Go to a bar in BC and start ridiculing the way people talk about riding why dont you, see how far you get.

Forgive me, I’m quite new here, a refugee if you like – perhaps I’ve spent too long on BikeRadar :-/

I’m going to go an All Mountain the sh*t out of the trails this weekend, I promise!

I like ‘aggressive’. Not sure of a better term to describe those times when you’re really attacking a trail, using lots of body english, railing the corners and generally pumping every ounce of speed out of it.

But ultimately is it not just riding a mountain bike? People feel the need to find a name for what they do as XC just isn’t cool anymore…

    “Aggresive XC” lol

It’s like regular XC but with a dose of small man syndrome thrown in…

Garylake, if you tilt the image back round so the trees point up, is that actually up hill? [;-)]

Na, pure flat, but yes – giving it some MBUK ‘angle’ for MORE SPEED!

My wife will have been doing it for a year next month! It is tricky and tantrums are inevitable – I find doing this with a mate and getting out as couples helps – I tend t only get tantrums when we’re out on our own really (won’t cause a scene in front of others see!)

I’ve had a hard time getting her back out recently as she had a pretty big stack at Afan (first trail centre doh!) near the bottom of Hidden Valley – to my surprise she was a total star limping back two miles on a **** up ankle and hip and was far from put off – just totally gutted.

    Zooom!

    lol

If the rider had been performing stunts on his BMX such as the “Walltap Barspin”, the “360 Ledge” or the “Foot Jam Endo” then the child would certainly have been in danger and this would have been irresponsible.

The Cheesy Riders won the girls team of four fun in ’08 – they’re down to two riders only this year so were going to disband or go mixed – they might be interested – how “competitve” are you looking to be?

    GaryLake

First one fell to bits after 5 months, replaced (quite generously by LBS) with an ’09 model, so far so good.

Zips died on my ’08, I think they got clogged with grit during the wash so always do them up before washing. Waterproof taping all came away on the inside – no idea how to stop that. Both seem improved for ’09.
