So… who was riding and who was walking on the first Twin Brook crossing (the one with the rocky step-up)?

Walked the actual stream but cleared the root fest immediately after which everyone seemed to also walk, wasn’t nearly as difficult as it actually looked.

With the brook crossing, in my defence, it just looked like a clipped in tumble into the ditch waiting to happen and conditions sucked enough as it was!

I’m one of the LVIS Singlespeed Superstars, and although we are singlespeed superstars, once we saw all the road that was on the course, we decided to ride geared (give everyone else a chance :-).

Can’t say I blame you – I rode the parade lap SS to see what conditions were like before breaking out the Fullsusser (which I did and it got caked to sh*t anyway as it rained before my first counted lap). I was riding with a geared team mate, pulled a minute or so out on him and then lost a full 5 mins to him just coasting down the road section spinning out.

Assuming I’m thinking of the same bit, I think I was dropping in to the right and cutting across the roots to the left…

Anyone else doing laps in their sleep last night?

    Sorry Andy!!! What a pain…

Still bloody brave of you to a) finish the lap and b) even try another in the morning.

I reckon I’d have cried, packed up and gone home there and then… :'(

Oh well done sharki! I wonder who’d pruned the thing!

As mentioned, I was in the cheesy riders, we managed 6th place (sorry it’s not a race of course) with 25 laps – we were naturally chuffed with that and I think it was just down to always making sure we put a rider out there regardless of the weather.

That weekend was something else and I’m wrecked! Did the whole thing on high rollers which I’m going claim as good bike handling skills on my part – what a nightmare, I did the last lap for our team and it was easily the scariest thing I’d ever done and somehow brung it home still within the hour!

Great event, so well organised given the conditions and great vibe! No aggresive overtakers and I hope my own calls to pass were polite enough…

150mm full suss travel bikes ridden on local trails…

To be fair, not everyone can afford multiple bikes and 150mm bikes are starting to be light enough to be a real do it all bike.

It’s the age old, just cause someone’s riding a freeride bike down a toe path – doesn’t mean that’s all they ride it on…

Edit: besides, when we were doing bike fest laps the other day it was my almost 150mm full susser that was comfortably the first to the end of the upper quarry trail – oooooooohhhh ;)

Anyhow there is a fair chance the course might dry out between now and tomorrow midday (if it stops raining). Its very mild and with a bit of breeze it could dry out (ish).

Although this is the kind of desperate optimism I can get on board with!

How about just ride the event!!

If its sh*tty then put mud tyres on. If its dry put semi slicks on. Simple.

Oh get into the spirit of agonising over pointless decisions and talking crap on the internets!!! :-P

    FFS.

    that’s all I can say.

Quite. I’ve been lucky so I suppose it’s only fair I’d have a wet event sooner or later.

I hope this is weather credits banked for the bristol bike fest and it’ll bloody lovely there!

Ok, I’m convinced about riding the singlespeed now.

But tyres? What’s the epic-mud to bridleway/road/good-ground ratio like? My gut feeling is to chance the high rollers and trust in my ability to stay upright in the crap but if most of the lap is going to be like that then I’ll concede to the Trailrakers… Are any of the climbs going to be deep mud?

    Thoughts?

Ha, my Five is going to look ghetto as with it’s Cycraguard rear and down tube guards and some inner tube zip tied around the fork corwn :D

Add skinny trailrakers and an overshoe clad rider – shexy!

Tried and failed in Saltford (Bath) – was deffo well over 30 as I started to considerably drop the cars slowing down for it. Rode right in the middle of the markings, nothing.

Failing that there is the Freeride look of zip tying an old bit of inner tube between the crown and brace on the forks – very gash but suprisingly efficient!

Ahhh, nice one, will do that!

You can flick the lever on the fly, you shouldn’t switch which propedal position (1, 2 or 3) while on the bike is what I’ve been told.

EDIT: beaten by 7 mins, that’ll teahc me to open multiple threads and then reply to them without refreshing…

My Orange Five, was demoing at CwmCarn and used the uplift but to ride the XC back down from the freeride park. Rode the freeride park the first time and already decided it was going to be mine. Spent the rest of the day agonising over colour and trying not to crash from over exuberance. Ironically, once mine was delivered I did in fact crash it, quite badly, on the first ride, at cwmcarn, all down to over exuberance… typical!

Before that, I had one of the higher end Schwinn Gold label Moab’s before it all went to sh*t for them. That was realy fast and leggy from the off!

Antony, they were only 2.4 Rubber Queens so not excessive (800g ish)

Blue groove up front in 2.35 is the perfect trail centre/stoney trails tyre all year round (never happy on anything else) – it’s brilliant in the wet too. It doesn’t like excessive mud but only gets out of hand when it’s thick and really sticky.

I run it all year round even locally because it’s really good on wet roots which are more of an issue locally than the admittedly bad mud…

I don’t like Nevegals on the rear, they do work but being a lightweight I tend to run skinny and fast (either SMB8 if dry and HR2.1 if wet).

Lapierre Froggy – although it only weighted 36lb I’ll be buggered if I could get that thing up to speed, it always felt like it wanted to coast to a stop rather than pick up speed. Doesn’t say a lot for a Freeride bike when I was only impressed by how well it climbed (it really did climb well mind!)

Specialized Stumpjumper FSR – dull, soft and reluctant.

I’ll be stringing together a load of zip ties to see if I can somehow fit my crudcatcher to the downtube of an Orange Five.

And then go and decide to ride the singlespeed anyway.

    Trailrakers are packed.
