I think there is a degree of issue though because the regulars are often doing Bike Fest laps (myself included), and on the odd occasion the course is actually dry, trying to bank a PB while going against the flow of those following the waymarkers is a recipe for distaster…

Gnnr, Ardent still could be dodgy, Brechfa is very stoney slatey on the ground and they felt suicidal there when the rain came down even though there was no mud.

Ardent is a much more fair weather option IMO. Excellent in the dry, quickly gets sketchy in the Wet. Only tried RQ in 2.4s Black Chilli but based on that I'm expecting a much more all weather performance than the Ardents, but the Ardents are likely to be faster.

I've done almost all of Afan non-stop (W2, Penhydd and July) on an Altitude 30 before. So yeah, great for all day. The Maxle Reba giving it tons of trail swagger to an otherwise nice tidy and fun XC bike.

I skipped 24" because I detoured off to BMX around that age.

Tbh he'll cope with whatever you get him. When I was 12 I was plopped onto an 18" framed Diamond back and happily blasted around the Qs on it. Ok, perhaps I needed to find a bank on the side of the trail to get on or off the thing but I did all right once I got pedalling!

You just pull the end caps out and put the new ones in, doesn't matter whether you're going from 15mm to 20mm or normal QR.

I'm with the OP, bike lube or GT85 for some reason is a wicked smell.

Tyres breaking traction on dry trails – like proper almost binned it lock ups where you end up fluking your way through a section quicker than ever even though you essentially cocked it up.

Not had any work done with him yet but went riding together last week, super nice guy and competitive on them trails – good fun going wheel to wheel at Cwmcarn in rain-mageddon conditions!

Um, well I said months not weeks…

And 3 miles each way is 6, and that's only riding to the trails, not the actual ride.

And in the summer, do that 3 or 4 times a week.

Used to be a couple of months, sometimes weeks depending on the compound – but that was with a 3 mile road ride to the local trails. Now I'm offroad pretty much from my front door so much longer.

I've split the last three before I've wear them out now…
