DezB: did you give the cyclist as much room as you’d give a car?

I’m often annoyed at how little room I’m given and then amazed by how annoyed said driver is at the fact that I’m annoyed.

Father in law’s Bose HiFi is pretty impressive but actually no better than my Cambridge Audio Richer Sounds job which was half the price. But then it takes up a fraction of the room and doesn’t have infant attracting speakers in harms way.

(I still don’t know why I threw the speaker covers away)

AMs are more like 1600g though. But yes, proper sorted for money, weight and build.

Based on the proto I rode and the designs I was shown at Icebike, it was Trek and ABP that was the issue. Deffo wasn’t a Horst link. They thought they’d got round it but designed the single pivot bike above just in case. Looks like they needed it.

This thread is peppered with so many bad puns.

I don’t have a pair of skinny jeans or a Rapha cap and my SS is covered in mud.

There’s a *gasp* Orange Five in one of the earlier submissions!

Officially no. Might get away with it but not tried it. Conversely, there is no Shimano 10 speed specific front shifters, you use 9 speed.

Should be comparing Soul to a Latitude and BFe to an Alptitude IMO.

Dave at Orange has just confirmed there’s not a Carbon Five going around, nor will there be for be the foreseeable future.

Maybe Gore withdrew their sponsorship because it didn’t rain enough to test their gear?

To be fair, day 3 and 7 were a pretty good test 😀

I always thought DSLRs on the trails were the preserve of “Fat Friends” you know the chap who’s mates can all ride while he’s happier to document their adventures and eat some pies…

I’m 75kgs and my line of work extends to photography and video, plus my friends are generally really appreciative of it, and I managed a few stages of the TransWales this year with it in my bag, and placed alright. Plus, a 550d and a lens really doesn’t weigh anything like 8lbs.

    But thanks for asking!

I always thought not taking a camera out on the trail was the preserve for “billy no-mates” with some chip on his shoulder and a point to prove by being so AWESOME. You’re not Surf-Matt are you?

    Oh… 😉

If you’re really desperate for the event (i.e. you haven’t sorted anything) you can just borrow the wheels off my Cotic X…

    105 +1

The rear mech is perhaps a little sloppy offroad but the chain never drops, just slaps a bit more than you’d like.

Try and get a proper cross ratios on the crankset though (which you won’t be able to 105), 46/36

Shimano have got some dedicated cross groups coming out shortly, different names but basically 105 and Ultegra level I believe.

Decent contents away from home cover and just stick it in your hydration pack. Put it in a waterproof stuffsack if rain is a possibility.

So my X9 Shifters not returning and rear mech getting stuck in 1st Is most likely down to 4 month old dirty cables?

Not necessarily, I’ve seen X9 mechs jam due to stuck rivets as well as them coming loose.

I think people’s experiences with rear mechs fall into two categories: there are those who know how to set up a mech, and there are those who do not; the latter get luckier with one make over another and mistake it for being much superior.

What has setting a mech up got to do with pivots coming loose?

I’ve found X9 mechs, both 9 and 10 speed, to go really baggy and loose within a year, basically developing a bit of play in all the rivets.

If you’ve been sold a 17″ frame the shop needs some staff that know their stuff.

17″ new for 2012 – customer demand meant many wanted the the 18″ reach but with a bit more standover. Given I’m 5’8″ and had to buy an 18″, I wished they’d done that size in 2008…

20thebear – they’re Cy’s Cotic Components wheels. Totally bargainous, a bit porky but sturdy enough and the hubs run really well!

Cartridge bearing hubs laced with no frill spokes to some Alex road rims.

Also really don’t understand why they designed it for a 140mm rotor, I noticed that the latest Pompetamine has 180mm rotors. I had to buy an XTR centrelock rotor at great expense, and it runs about 2mm from the chainstay, which means that when the rear wheel is removed the paint has chipped off.

I don’t think I’ve caught the rotor on the chain stay once while taking the wheel out.

And to probably to get it through CEN without having to build it too heavy?

5’8″ with 32″ inside leg here, 54cm with an 80mm stem. Perfect fit.

It’s usually the upper body that gives in once you’ve got reasonably strong.

This was why my laps times were crashing at 6am when I did 24/12 last year. That and stupid crap like blisters and hand numbness. Legs reached a point where they stopped hurting any more than the already did but the rest of the body started to fall to bits.

it teaches you life skills, gives you confidence in yourself and creates a sense or worth

Apparently, despite almost every single person under the age of 18 currently rioting and looting, there are a small minority of parents who have somehow managed to raise young people who have life skills and confidence in themselves with a sense of worth. I know it’s only a few but it’s possible!

    </sarcasm>

Sorry but all this call for National service, it’s a few hundred youths per city, there is an element of needing to get a grip. Believe it or not, most young people still turn out alright these days.

KT: was it you or ADH who had that slightly cheeky CX route (GPX) from Portishead to Bristol? Still interested!

    GaryLake

Yeah driving Portishead to Bristol isn’t really viable at rush hour unless you like sitting in your car a lot. (Edit, 15 mins is intolerable for me)

Bits of Pill are a little bit, well, I’m careful about being followed home when returning on bike, put it that way. I’ve never had any trouble but there’s certainly a few about who you wouldn’t ask to look after your bike…

Commuting via LW and AC is bloody ace though, especially with the new trails. Hammered down all day Sunday, trails were almost dry by the time I cycled home Monday afterwork.

After 6 hours, we swapped for the giddy joy of a new taks, and were almost instantly bollo**ed as if we hadn’t time to learn the subtleties of each position.

After 8 hours we were both giggling in a slightly deranged manner.

    I lasted 1 shift.

I was honestly expecting you to reveal that she is now your wife or something… missed opportunity?

Temp student job working at the car importers on the docks. Basically putting the Suzuki car manuals together for the glove box. Beyond mind numbing and having to tolerate the most racist bastard of a boss you’d ever seen verbally abusing the small collective of non-white workers to a truly shocking level.

Everyday I prayed for one of them to turn round and lamp him…
