18 mph over 72 miles is really quick mate (even for a racer) Honestly it’s not, it’s okay but it’s not ‘really quick’.

sofatester I commute between 120 and 200 miles a week on the bike – it’s 20 miles each way. I don’t do it on a singlespeed though ;)

Yeh at 5am its not bad, but it’s not very good for the journey home. And I was beinh slightly tounge in cheek.

Read about that last week. Only does it once a week though but he still must be knackered on a Friday night. I notice it says he’s use the commute to practice for time trials and he really does need the practice – 72 miles in 4 hours is a failry slow pace for someone who races.

If he did it every day all through winter then I might be impressed ;)

Just checked the forecast for the next few toadys and it’s not looking good for me, particularly tomorow. And for tonights journey home I can look forward to a 20 mph headwind, heavy sleet and a temp that ‘feels like’ -6. Roll on 5pm.

Yeh I had a great one too but it was very slippy, bike was all over the place at one point on ice but I managed to stay upright.

Really, and you still survive in the modern world. I’m shocked.

mrdoubletake I don’t really care if you like it or not. It’s one solution, another is stop being so petty, I have others but I doubt you would like them.

And why oh why would the stw accountant suggest you cancel your subs then resubscribe. That makes no sense at all. Are you as stupid as you appear to be?

    Gary_M

mrdoubletake you wwere whinging so I gave you a solution. I’d have said the same thing had it been any mag. Clearly you have no business sense.

could it be that subscribers pay the real price and everyone else pays the real price + 10%? I dispair.

Maybe i need to “realign my values and loyalty” quite clearly you take things way too seriously.

3/10 you really must try harder Sorry but I really do not have a clue what you’re on about.

Offering a free book that a publisher is happy to get rid of isn’t quite the same thing.

Speshpaul I think you’re imagining things now. I added a paragraph at the bottom of my post when I edited it, you must be loosing the plot.

    Gary_M

Probably in my spam folder and what’s this swearing you’re on about Speshpaul?

    Gary_M

Why do people expect the folks at stw to explain every business decision they make? You buy the mag, you’re not a shareholder.

No not bothered at all Speshpaul, I was just wondering if it was an offer in the mag and I missed it. Anyway I’m a subscriber so I would expect to be treated the same as any other subscriber unless the offer is based on length of time as a subscriber for example, so it’s not the same argument.

What book was that wwaswas, I subscribe to C+ and didn’t get any offer of a book?

    Gary_M

Well it works with other mags.

I think itís pretty naive for anyone to think that a magazine business would send a ëthank you for already being a subscriberí gift to existing subscribers.

    Gary_M

mrdoubletake, as above if you’re really breaking your heart over it then cancel and resubscribe. Easily solved eh.

    Gary_M

Isn’t it the same with subs to any magazine – once you’re in then you’re in. You don’t keep getting freebies every time the mag does some form of promotion and you shouldn’t expect to. Where would be the business sense in that. If you buy something and see it in the sale months later do you take the hump with the shop?

If you’re that bothered about it use some common sense and cancel your current subs then resubscribe. Personally for a hip flask or a dvd I wouldn’t bother.

The idea of the promotion is to attract new subscribers, it’s not just a giveaway for the sake of it.

Why didn’t you ask why you were stopped? I would have been interested to know why.

Gutted Rich as I’m sure you are. I was looking forward to building a double light syste. I’ll need to have a bit of a rethink about how to take out the middle section of the battery.

I have no idea who you, your name doesn’t register with me as someone with any remarkable contribution so you won’t be missed.

I use a jake the snake for my 20 mile each way commute and it’s perfect for me. Tried my road bike and mtb but the cx bike just feels more stable in traffic than the road bike and abvioulsy faster than the mtb. Been using it for the last 2 years and done around 12k miles on it, its surviving well and seems to be tough as old boots.

Yeh any lenses with colour in them will be a no-no in my opinion. I use clear lenses which filter the light a little bit.

At the moment about 4 times a week and that will increase to 5 or 6 times a week later in the year. I do a 20 mile each way commute though which helps get the miles in. I’m pretty happy with the amount of riding I’m doing but I’d quite like to do more long distance rides this year.

Most of my riding is on road mainly because of the commute but also because I’m not really into going out for short rides on the mtb and I don’t have any long off road routes from home.

One 11 year old son if that makes a difference.

As others have said don’t brake ster, pedal or move you’re body and you may be okay. But it depends in the length of the icy section as if it’s only a bike’s length then the bike may regain grip before either end has time to slide out. It’s lilley you’ll fall off though ;)

Not sure what hubs he’s got. He went to his lbs this afternoon and the guy said to him, “folk these days just get a new hub” so he doesn’t stock bearings – nob.

I wasn’t actually being serious when I said ‘non-disposable’ hub and I’m aware that modern hubs use cup ‘n’ cone – shimano for example. I just couldn’t be arsed entering into a discussion about it.

Sorry I should have said in a ‘non-disposable’ hub.

I’ve been using Gore ones for the last 4 months and I’m really, really impressed with them. Ridden a couple of thousand miles wearing them and they don’t seem to have worn at all. Stay up fine, nice slim legs, ecellent shorts.

I’m doing the same thing at the moment. We went for a Bosch 5 burner hob and single over which if I remember rightly comes in at about £800. I’m sure you’ll find a cooker hood for £200. Best price I found was from B&Q when they were doing 15% off. Currys/comet were way more expensive. I searched through loads of sites for the best price.

B&Q also didn’t achieve the sales figures they hoped for during their 15% off thing so it’s highly likley to happen again at the end of this month.

I was thinking about this the other day. I’ve got two properties and the mortgage on one is a tracker based on the standard variable rate. At the moment I’m paying buttons for the mortgage. The other mortgage is a fixed rate and if it was the same deal as the other one I’d be around £200 a month better off. But it’s just one of these things you have to accept I’m afraid, these are exceptional times.

You could possibly call the bank and explain you can’t afford the mortgage ate the current rate due to a change in circumstances but to be honest I think you just have to accept that you can’t have it both ways.

I subscribe to Singletrack, rouleur and Cycling Plus.

Cycling Plus is great, all different kinds of bikes looked at, diet, fitness, etc. All the stuff that interests me and I read it cover to cover.

rouleur – an absolutely beautiful magazine, well written, fantastic photography, minimal ads.

Singletrack – it doesn’t really suit the sort of riding I’m into but its reasonably well sritten and designed.

Hora the Labour party are following Labour party principles in terms of of a recession – they’re not just doing ‘something, anything’. Perhaps you would prefer a more ‘Laissez Affair’ attitude to the economy.

I’ll ask again Hora in the hope of getting an answer – ‘What economic principles would you apply when the UK is in the midst of a recession?’
