Only time I got points was back in ’95,drove down the M6 from Lancs to Birmingham,Sunday morning in November, not much traffic.
Week later letter from GMP lands on the doormat, done by a camera in a van on a bridge near Haydock,90mph,3 points £40 fine.
Thing was, the car I had at the time was the least powerful one I had owned,a 1.4 Rover!
In earlier times,1984 to 88,owned a couple of Mk2 Escort RS2000’s,quite often got stopped by cops & ‘advised’ about my driving. On one occasion was going round a corner on opposite lock, steering car on the throttle, was seen by plod on foot who radioed through to car up the road, who pulled me over.
Cheeky buggers tried to tell me I was out of control!!
    Grown up since then tho!

I have a 36 FLOAT,(2008)& when I use the bike with my Crossmax ST wheelset,I can’t use my 203mm hope floating rotor, the alloy spider catches the post mount tabs.I have to fit a standard rotor instead.

    cp,
    I have a C-Max 1.6 TDCI Ghia,’04 plate.
Bought it 16 months ago,58k on the clock, its now done 71k,& in that time not had a problem with it,it returns 54-58mpg on motorways,(altho have had 61 mpg on a trip from Lancashire to Keswick & back!).
Ref headlamp bulbs,to change them its just a matter of removing a torx bolt, pushing down on a retaining clip located at the bottom of the headlamp,& it pulls straight out.Fitted a HID kit to mine, which improves the lighting 100% over the standard candles.
    Now,onto the important stuff……carrying bikes…..
I run the car,say,95% of the time as a two seater.i.e.with all 3 rear seats removed. Its easy to do,just tilt the backrests forward, then tilt the seat assemblies forwards, flp two red levers,& remove seats.(They weigh a LOT,I was surprised at how much, why spend £100’s chipping it to improve the power?,just remove the seats to improve the power to weight ratio!!)
I get the bike in led down, without having to remove the wheels, but as is more often, travelling 2 up,with 2 bikes,I just remove the front wheels,& stand the bikes up.If 3 of us need carrying,i just refit one rear seat,& 3 bikes go in as before, stood up with front wheels removed,& all ride kit piled up behind the rear seat.
Also,i’ve fitted a “hatchbag” http://www.hatchbag.co.uk inside the rear of the car, protects the carpets, side trim, door cards etc from muddy bikes.(Altho they had to specially order mine,as up until I ordered it,they didn’t make one to fit a C-Max that has its seats removed).
As for driving, its v v comfortable, driving position is great, went from Lancs up to Fort Bill last May,2 up,d/h bike,x.c. bike,3 days worth of kit, tools, spares etc, just stopped once at Carlisle services,& when we arrived at Fort Bill felt as fresh as when I had got in the car back home,55mpg for the return trip.
As you may have sussed,I like this car a LOT!

IIRC,12/18 months ago,a local lad fell off the top of Ouster Rake down into the valley below.
Mountain Rescue had to call on the services of the RAF to airlift him out with a SeaKing ‘copter.
I must admit that I always struggle riding it,especially about 1/2way down where you’re riding in a deep rut, that is just about wide enough, but narrow enough for you to catch your pedals.
    A damn good challenge tho!!

And here isn’t another picture of Ouster Rake, with one of my mates ‘not’ riding down it

My ’06 RFX is fitted with 36 FLOAT’s most of the time, nice & (relatively) light, plush as owt,& the lack of travel adjustment is forgotten about after a couple of rides.(They replaced a set of Wotan’s which had the travel adjuster).
    When I use the bike for a bit more d/h action,a set of Marzocchi 66’s go on,they’re 180mm travel,weigh a ton…but what the heck!!

    Hats off to the pilot.

To be faced with this emercency just after take off, take control of the aircraft, decide to attempt a landing on water, keep it level enough just to skim on the surface so that the plane didn’t break up on impact, put mildly takes some doing!

Lets face it,its not a landing you can practice!

    takisawa2,nice s-works there,mate.
How do you find it rides with the Pikes?(140mm I presume)
Built mine up originally with 130mm Pace RC40XCAM’s,then changed to 125mm TALAS RLC’s.
Just taken my 36 FLOAT’s off another bike, dropped the travel by 30mm,but amount of stanchion showing is more like 140mm,not had chance to ride it yet, just wondering if it’ll upset the geometry(therefore the handling).

I run one of my bikes with dedicated ust wheels & tyres.
Another bike with ‘ghetto’ tubeless,(xc717 rims & std high rollers).
The rear high roller had done 4 weeks riding in the Alps over the last 2 years,(with inner tube)& had been relegated to the spares box ’cause it was very worn, but I decided to try it for my first ghetto experiment.
Anyway, its served me well over the last 4 months,& has just been replaced after looking more like a racing slick rather than a knobbly, not good in winter!
I replaced it with a Panaracer xc pro 2.1 dedicated ust tyre, which was a right b@stard to get on the rim, think the extra thickness in using the 20″ tube stretched over the rim edge made it so.

Ref the Giro Remedy,i’ve got one myself but find it quite heavy & not that well vented imho.Using it on uplift days in the colder months isn’t too bad however, but took it to LesArcs in the hot summer of ’07 & it was a bit claustrophobic.
I now have a Specialized Deviant which is really well vented,& once its on tend to forget its there!

mrmichaelwright:Didn’t want to send a long winded reply originally, but takisawa sums it up for me.
Also, when I said “just carry on driving”,do just that, nornally, not bombing off up the road like some wally. If the cops behind are genuine,a battenburg will soon be behind you asking you to pull in.

    Gary_C

    Definitely scammed imho.
My rule would be not to stop for an ‘unmarked’car, just carry on driving,if it was genuine plod behind they’d soon be on the radio for a ‘marked’ car to pull you over.
Did you gt his reg no?

I can highly recommend the Topeak ‘Joe Blow Sport’,its got dual valve head,Presta one side,Schraeder the other, flick lever to lock it on.
Use mine regularly, had it for over 5 years,& no hassles with it whatsoever.
Think the current list price is £30 or so,no doubt you will be able to get one for less.

Not got the turbo, only the standard version.
Find that mine creaks if its not stripped down & serviced regular.
Maybe this applies to the turbo one?

Greengore up to Longridge fell & back.

3 of us out,& the only tyre tracks in the thin covering of snow on the fireroad in Longridge fell were ours.

Yes,a multi clamp shimano,(I presume thats the type that comes with the plastic & metal shims),will fit.
Thats what I used when I built up my PA,& i’m sure that the seat tube is the same diameter on the Alpine.
