I had a R/F bb that wents tits up,& coupled with its predecessor,(also a R/F one, that was in the depths of my spares box),I decided rather than just buy a complete new unit,to buy 4 bearings off my local friendly bearing factors,(£40 for 4),& fit ’em myself.
Even though they are good quality SKF bearings,I popped the seals off & was surprised at how little grease was in them,so I packed them with plenty of good quality grease,& hopefully they’ll last.

5 of us out in Nidderdale today.Started from Pateley Bridge.

Unfortunately had to cut the off road section short on the return leg due to a ‘bit of snow’ hampering progress somewhat.

It was no less enjoyable though!

I agree, life should mean just that.

Not being handed a ‘life’ sentence, then only actually doing say 10 years or so as seems to be the case nowadays.

knott4me:Overtightened? I very much doubt it.In fact, there was no tightening torques quoted anywhere in the magura manual,(2006),it just said “fit the brake according to the manufacturers instructions”.
The brakes I fitted are Hope mono m4,203mm rotor, small amount of blue loctite on the fixing bolts,(standard length bolts supplied with the brake),& just nipped up.
When the cracks appeared,my lbs & I came to the conclusion that the bolts weren’t long enough,i.e.once they had passed through the thickness of the caliper,(direct fit to the post,no adaptor required),there wasn’t sufficient thread length going into the post,so with the braking force trying to rotate the caliper forwards,in efect pulling the post mounts upwards, caused the cracking.
When the forks returned from Magura, longer bolts were fitted, but 4 months later…..cracked again!
Oh,the above was just one example of a long list of problems I suffered with these forks.

Carefully check the post mounts for cracks…

I had a Wotan that cracked on the post mounts, the lowers were replaced,& the replacements cracked too.

    fatmuthahubbard,
Sorry, the cups that I put the new bearings in today were Superstar ones,& the 21mm socket easily dropped in & sat on the bearings inner race,so’s I could drive them out.

However,a few months back,I did the same replacements to some RaceFace cups,& I was able to drift out one side only using the socket method, the other side was the same i.d. as what you are saying.(Strange,that).
So I had to knock it out using a screwdriver & hammer, which was a right pita!

The replacement bearings that I use are numbered 61805-2RS.You still need to use the plastic top hats.

Funnily enough within the last 1/2hr,i’ve replaced a pair of bearings in an external bb.
Not having the proper tools I used a 1/2 drive 21mm socket, short 1/2 drive extension, rubber faced mallet.Knocked out the bearings using the socket, pressed in the new bearings by initially lining up the bearing in the housing & then placing the assembly in the jaws of my B&D workmate,(Don’t have a vice!),& then tightening the jaws, then pressed the bearing in the rest of the way using a 27mm socket, placed between the jaws & the bearing in the housing.
In fact its took me as long to type this as it took to do the job!

Just watched a piece on ITN ref Clarkson.
Katie Derham, reading the news put plenty of emphasis into the phrase:”One eyed Scottish idiot” when she repeated what he had said.lol.
Imho Clarkson was just stating facts:
    One eyed…..Fact
    Scottish…..Fact
    Idiot……..Fact

daj, iirc, every time you screw on the shock pump,it does take some pressure out of the shock to fill the hose & gauge on the pump-hence the low reading.
So pump shock up to your preferred pressure,& all should be well.
If it was me,i’d pump it up to pressure now, leave it for 24 hrs before checking it again,& if there is just a 10psi drop, then its as my 1st paragraph.

Simon, don’t think we saw your group.

The only other riders we saw were a group of about six,as we were riding up the bw from Knipe Fold, approaching the gate on the right where you go onto Iron Keld, they were coming down out of Iron Keld.
    That was about 12 noon.
