Defo agree High Cup to Dufton for the descent. The other way to Murton is much tamer. Makes a slightly more  off road climb than the road to the radar station.

Yesterday and today out on the local loop (roads are all closed / impassable).  Loving the North Pennines…

    Use Garmin BaseCamp:

Make a new folder, add the 8 references (use the flag icon), tidy up the naming, when done select the folder and from “file” menu choose Export “folder name” and you will have a GPX file.

You can copy this over to the “New Files” folder on your Garmin 800 as you would a route.

Good running around Swaledale – check out the Dales Trail Series routes (http://www.dalestrailseries.uk/dt20/)…

Cross bike across Sleightholme Moor to Tan Hill, and back via Swaledale and Arkengarthdale – can even go exploring the lead mines NW of Reeth on a CX bike (https://gcrapper.wordpress.com/2017/08/19/swaledale/)

The guys at Boreale are amazing, accommodation/location is great and food out-of this world. Jealous. I loved it and will be back at some point.

When I look at these fatbbikes I see slow gruelling hard work am I wrong? are they overkill for mainly flat gravel and woodland stuff?

I was surprised to get some Strava PBs when I took it around the forest – on the uphills as expected (no shocks to squash), but also on the downhills (but think I did get RSI from the rocky sections).

Rob, where are you at? I’ve bars and one bike rack for my previous (’61 reg) A4 saloon. Free to a good home! (I’m in County Durham).

Well, I was going to keep things to the Cheviots, but as Kielder is mentioned…

Well overdue for a return trip, but this was the last visit.

Think it was a mistake going all the way down the hill to Newcastleton – it was hard work climbing back up with a “full Scottish” inside…

Where next? North Pennines, because that’s home territory!

I’m looking for something similar, but reading your link, it seems to imply 50mm tyre width (2 inches), which would rule out a couple of my bikes… Will watch thread with interest!

Did find something on the web on the Hilton bridleway (for fell baggers – seem to recall only open at weekends – better check online).

Also see on my new online OS subscription there is a new (i.e. not on any of my on computer or paper maps) bridleway from High Cup Nick to Murton, descending west of Murton Fell and South of Murton Pike. Might check this out in the next month or so – looks to be present on the aerial photography.

Still need to do the full round over Cross Fell following this abortive attempt last year… https://gcrapper.wordpress.com/2015/10/01/disaster-strikes/

Used to live in Shenzhen, and we’d only do stuff outside in winter. Too hot otherwise.

Didn’t do too much walking in Shenzhen, but plenty of nice trails in HK either New Territories or south side of HK island and Lan Tau. Would be good on a bike (in January).

Not a great picture, or memory, but an early season crash in Swaledale, leaving me with concussion and needing a new helmet…

Late summer session where established high pressure led me to take a week off work to go cycling. One highlight was the Cross Fell loop, including the spectacular High Cup…

A great day out on the ’Ard Rock. Looking forward to doing it all again in 2016!

    That Skiddaw/Blencathra loop was 50km, 870m climbing.

    https://www.strava.com/activities/404847030

The mine roads were nice, but quite a bit of road, especially the last quarter(A591) (which could be improved by heading west a bit and coming back around the top of Bassenthwaite Lake and via Embleton and Wythrop Mill.

    Brilliant.

Finished well down the ranks, which I’d like to put down to stopping on the final descent to help my mate fix a tube. However my times for the earlier stages suggest my performance was, at best, mediocre.

Loved it and will be back next year.

For the GPX, I went to the official route page, clicked the blue button to open in Google Maps…

Where it has the title in top left, drop this list down, and at the end of the “share” buttons, the last button will let you export a KML file.

Garmin Connect will read this and let you export a GPX (other conversion tools are available, and I think a Garmin might even be able to understand a KML file).

I love mine. Does commute, light off-road, and (last year) LEJOG.

Clip on rear mudguard when weather is bad, otherwise just a green Ass Saver to stick with the colour scheme.

Dirty Disco gets extremely dirty with its new tubeless cross tyres…

If you have the OS maps on your Garmin, use BaseCamp which runs native.

Easiest is to have the GPS connected via cable, and BaseCamp will “see” the OS maps.

Fastest is to copy your OS maps from the GPS to a disc image (which BaseCamp will think is your micro USB in the GPS, but will transfer maps to the programme much quicker – you’ll need to unlock the IMG file you copy over, but a quick Google should help there).

Rarely if ever use Memory Map since I got that sorted.
