I remember when they tried something similar to this before, where they had similar things printed in magazines which you could then scan with your computers web cam…

I also seem to remember that failed dismally…

Then I’d assume his sparky would know the answer!

It’s all very well following the regs, but unless you are deemed a ‘competent person’ as defined by the IEE part ‘P’ regulations, you are not allowed to sign off on work such as this.

Which you might think is not a problem, but without it being signed off it does nasty things like invalidate your house insurance.

To be honest, if you don’t know the answer then you probably aren’t qualified to do the work and sign it off.

I’d suggest getting a qualified sparkie in to do it.

On those specs and prices, I’d go for the HP every time… the MacBook is just outclassed on pretty much everything, and it costs 40% more!

And if you are playing games, the biggest difference between the two will be the 17″ screen on the HP vs the 15″ in the Mac.

And finally, while the MacBook might be worth slightly more than the HP after 3 years, the difference in prices certainly won’t be the same as the £700 you’d have saved in buying the HP.

Although I don’t have any pics, I’m 5’8″ and have the medium-short drop bar Road Rat which fits perfectly…

I got the pre-built singlespeed disc version through the Bike-to-Work scheme, and have since put 1×10 Campag on it. And, despite what some folks on the net say, you can quite easily set the Tektro discs up to run with normal Ergo levers.

Have been using it to commute and am loving the bike…

ahwiles… firstly, what netbook have you installed it on? Next, do a search on google for any information relating to that netbook and the ubuntu version that you are using. For the most part, if you are trying to do something, someone else will have already tried it, and will have asked the same questions you are asking, and they’ve probably got the answers from those ‘twatty’ forums you seem to have an issue with.

And am not sure what Ubuntu forums you have been reading, but they seem to be pretty good natured and very helpful to me… but they probably do get bored of people asking questions which have already been answered. Of course, STW is never like that… ;o)

Well, it depends what you like, but there are loads of small singletrack trails all over the woods north of Notts, the vast majority of which are cheeky and you just have to find them. But saying that, there are some fun bridleways as well…

Spend a while riding around Blidworth, Sansom and Theives Woods and you’ll find it eventually, just try diving down anything that looks interesting! Bestwood has some trails which are easier to find, along with a little jump spot (although I have a feeling this might have been fenced in) and some drops…

It’s always a good area for a night ride, with plenty to keep you interested, but in general I’d head out to the Peak for any kind of day ride…

If you upgrade to Android 2.2, assuming you can of course, you can just use iPlayer on the BBC website, as 2.2 has Flash working.

    Or just use myplayer…

<snip> no one ordered trains for a few years so our ability to build trains was lost.

Well… while I agree with the sentiment on the rest of your post TJ, this last little bit is not quite true. Thankfully, we do still make trains in this country… although depending on the governments spending review, we might not for much longer!

The Middleburn 4 bolt spider I have at home has the middle ring using the same chainring bolts as the outer ring.

    Under the inner tube? Gotcha…

Doesn’t it make getting tyres on and off a right bugger though? Some tyres are tight enough to get on even when you can use the centre of the rim to give a little more slack!

The big craze last year was to make your own… using a knobbly tyre and some screws…

If we end up with the same weather as last winter I know I’ll be looking at doing this!

I just use MyTracks for logging my route, and that doesn’t seem to eat up much battery life at all… I’ve had it logging for about 7 hours before and there was about 25% battery left…

I then just start and stop the OS mapping software as and when I need it.

It’s bridleways around a reservoir in the heart of the busiest National Park in the world… I’m not sure you are ever gonna get ‘away from it’ in the Derwent Valley!

But what’s wrong with the Beast, or the Lockerbrook descents, or Blackley Clough, or Whinstonelee Tor to Cutthroat Bridge? They are all pretty good fun if you ask me! Then there’s the Cut Gate descent into the valley… which certainly had me clenching at times!

so… Oooh, I didn’t think about using luggage straps. In fact, I have some ratchet straps at home which would do the job perfectly. I just couldn’t believe how much easier it was using this technique though…

adh… I’d heard about that, but doesn’t the foam just absorb all the latex solution as soon as you put it in?

It's amazing how much good a nights rest will do for a dog… our's can go from hobbling and not being able to get onto the sofa in the evening to being fine and dandy next day…

We then started giving him glucosamine and condritin(sp?) and while he was less stiff at times than before, we were also a lot more careful about how we exercised him.

So, I'd probably say the pills do more to make my other half happy, than they do good for the dog. It's just being aware there is a problem meant that we took more care about his exercise.

I do need to build up to it, and I will be able to ride in most days… I'm already knocking time off the commute. I think I had it down to 55 mins on the way in yesterday compared to just over the hour the other week.

My old commute used to be faster even though it was longer, then we moved house, a few miles closer to work, but managed to put a couple of hills in the way! D'oh.. first time I tried it singlespeed.. decided against that for the time being after I arrived at work and my legs refused to work!

mike.. you only have a 2.5 mile commute and you managed those? Ye gods!! If I manage to commute every day, at that rate I'll easily be able to beat you at the Kielder next year… yeah right! ;o)

I think at the moment if I did 3 or 4 days a week I'd just collapse at the end of the week… I can feel it enough in my legs after yesterday as it is!

But it's definitely making a difference as I was twiddling with ease up some climbs in the Peak which I had really struggled on before… which is nice.

I've just restarted commuting again, once a week to start with, but twice this week and boy does it hurt! Mine's only 12.5 miles each way though…

So, you have my sympathy… although I wished I hadn't ridden in yesterday now, as the weather is sooo much nicer today.

The newer chipsets use a more powerful GPU (the Adreno (Or something) 205 vs 200) which they say is about 4x as powerful as the one in the current Desire.

Toasty… you do realise that the HD uses a newer version of the Snapdragon, so not the same one in the normal Desire, which I believe at least matches, if not exceeds, the current Hummingbird performance.

Also, as Samsung are making phones based aroung the Hummingbird processors, I'm not sure how HTC using the Snapdragon will make iPhone games any better.

And then of course the next gen of phones which will come around soon enough will be boasting dual core processors and the like.

The original Aldi merino tops were 100% merino, but were also a little more expensive than they are now… I was most disappointed the next year when I went in and they were only 30% merino..

They are pretty much horses for courses… and both do things that the other can't…

Personally, I went with Android as I like the open sourceness of it. Somehow, even though I have a couple of older Macs, I have managed to avoid the Jobsian Reality Distortion Field…

Unless they have updated it lots, I'm not sure the Nokia Sportstracker software is really what you want. It was fine for keeping track of where you have been, but no good for trying to navigate with.

The other option would be to run something like Viewranger, but you then need to buy OS maps for it.

Aaaaah.. gotcha, so it's a Rohloff requirement, and not a Gates requirement.

    That makes more sense now!

Having done a little more digging it looks like they might actually be compatible… but it would depend on the axle size of each set of wheels.

    So you might be okay…

    funkynick

Travellingman… eh? They state on the website that the Gates belt drive is compatible with Rohloff hubs…

As for steel frames, Fixie Inc. do one, plus Black Sheep make a titanium frame for belt drive…

Also, didn't someone recently just fit a belt drive to a Kona A, so I guess you can just buy the parts and sort it out yourself on whatever frame you like!

I doubt the freehub would just swap between the Campag wheels and the Fulcrum, but you can get cassettes that have the Campag splines and Shimano spacing and vice versa… I know Ambrosio make them as I have one on my Roadrat.

TJ… the main tubes are brazed together, the accoutrements are all silver soldered.

hungry.. even though I have done silver soldering before (a long time ago mind), I'd not want to risk doing something silly to my expensive custom Solitude! I'd get a pro to do it…
