250 motors a month being sent to the repair place does seem quite high though…

And there is loads all over the place, not just around the Monkey… you can hardly cycle/run/walk past an area of trees on the Chase these days without there being a trail entering/exiting…

    It’s ace!!!

I thought there was just a qualifier on the first red bit of FtD, although I noticed the other day that a line has appeared which avoids it…

I’m not too sure why there is a qualifier there though as I don’t remember anything being that tricky on the rest of the route, and certainly nothing which requires a FS… it’s not changed that much in the last few years…

Anyway, far more fun to be had away from the main routes… just go explore, although it might be a little muddy in places at the moment…

I used to get all sorts of knee and ankle pain when running, so gave up as a bad job…

Then I moved somewhere which allowed me to run mostly off road, plus I trained myself to fore/mid-foot strike, instead of landing on my heel, which my wife lovingly described as me looking like a demented antelope prancing along!

No idea which had the greatest benefit, but since doing those I’ve not had any of my previous issues.

I also noticed that you don’t get any of the support type language around buying trail running shoes, that seems to be more about ‘drop’ these days! I always assumed that was because on the road your foot is always landing the same way every stride and so you are getting very similar repeated stresses and strains over a whole run… whereas in trail running your foot is landing differently all the time, so the impact on you foot/ankle is different for pretty much every stride…

Anyway, I now just buying trail running shoes which are comfortable to run in… and having moved to Altra’s, with their wide toe box, I think they have ruined more normal running shoes for me!!

I’d say go for doing something different that you would love to do, but don’t necessarily feel you could justify normally…

I had a day out in the hills flying birds of prey for my 50th… which was just amazing… the birds are just absolutely awesome.

And I recently got my wife a pottery throwing day.

Just had a look for the gaiters… the velcro is a pretty neat idea… and could probably have done with some yesterday after having to run through ankle height water!

As for the extra grip, I got the feeling the guy in the shop was talking about steep downs… but am not sure it makes that much sense to me either, as I can’t see it adding any appreciable amount of grip…

But while we are talking about them…

Any idea what the little velcro tab on the back of the shoe are for?

The running shop I bought mine in said they add grip when running downhill…

And I’ll agree on the Lone Peaks being comfy… I’m not entirely sure how I am ever going to be able to run in anything with a normal sized toe box again!

I recently bought some spokes from RyanBuildsWheels on ebay.

I ended up getting Sapim D-lights but haven’t managed to actually build the wheels yet, so can’t say what they will be like to use.

Had a watch of the Hardtail Party review… he rather likes it does he! But he’s shorter than me, but said he would have preferred a medium, but then it sounds like he wants a long bike for the riding he does…

Also had a look on Geometry Geeks… it says the sear tu e angle is the same, but current bike has a steeper head angle but similar (4mm shorter) effective top tube length as the small frame… which I guess would mean it would be slightly shorter than my current bike when built as the stem on the Cotic is likely to be shorter.

Thanks for the offer gotbike, but getting time to get to Sheffield could be tricky…

So, looks like I’ll be speaking to Cotic on Monday then…

    Thanks all

Right hand one you can do with no trig…

You can complete the square using the two similar sides and the right angle. That then gives a 60 degree angle (150 – 90) between the top of the square and the third similar side. That is therefore an equilateral triangle, so you can complete the last side of that.

That then forms an isosceles triangle with the long diagonal… with a known angle of 150, therefore the other two angles are 15… which means hi is 60 – 15… so 45.

    Like this, fg is 90 – 15.. so 75

Will think about the left hand one…

It feels like a lot of folks on here aren’t aware of the BC Go-Ride kids bike clubs which are dotted all around the country… including two (I think) within the Tweed valley.

Now, lots of those aren’t mountain bike specific, but there certainly are some in the areas where you’d expect. They are all volunteer run by qualified BC coaches, and one I used to coach at was £2 a session (1 1/2 hours), so not exactly extortionate! And as long as there is a Level 2 MTB coach (although I think that’s all changing) then they should be able to coach on jumps/drops etc…

I think most kids do benefit from some coaching… and we tended to find that even for kids who were really confident and pretty good on a bike, there were always areas which they weren’t doing so well. Often those areas were the sorts of things which are harder to pick up outside of a coaching session. For example, how often do we spend an hour just working on braking with our own kids when we are out? Usually we don’t want to be stood around making then ride round in circles for an hour when we could be out ‘shredding the gnar’! And if it’s anything like my son, he usually just grumps at me when I try to help him!

Also, we found that it was a good way for kids to meet other biking kids.. and parents to meet up other biking parents too!

    Twodogs…

I’ve not heard about that, but then there isn’t anything on the website for the pans we have which says they can’t go in the oven!

There is a slight coating on one of the handles of our Mineral B frying pan, but I’ve never really paid it much attention, and it certainly hasn’t caused any issues having been in the oven many times…

De Buyer pans are oven proof… and based on the abuse they get in our kitchen are pretty much anything proof… and would most likely see out the next couple of centuries of hard use and still be perfectly fine!! Have used ours on everything from gas to ceramic to induction, and even used one on a camp fire…

They ones we have are heavy though, but that’s part of the point, they hold the heat.

It might be worthwhile looking at something like a Micro:bit for a really simple introduction to coding for something… it’s a little more immediate than the arduino as it’s pretty much self contained.

It starts off with drag and drop coding, but it also allows you to see the written code behind it… but also allows you to write code as well.

My wife was very reactive when she was tapering off her AD med, Citalopram I think but it was a number of years ago now. She started using a pill-cutter but she really struggled with the varying doses, plus she ended up needing to go down in such small steps that it become really difficult to cut up, or weigh the powder if it had ended up being ground up.

Anyway, she was able to get hold of it as a liquid, rather than a pill, which then allowed her to very gradually, and accurately reduce her meds over quite a long period of time. She used an accurate click pipette do-hicky which allowed her to measure the drops accurately.

Likewise my mother in law is currently on ADs and uses the liquid form, but she just uses a normal dropper.

So, it might be worth asking GP’s if the liquid form is available.

I got really confused with compasses… as I thought they pointed back to your bed, but they do actually point to the world spawn point (0,0,0) not the players own spawn point (last bed).

And yes, the Nether can be fun like that, but also very useful for moving large distances in the over world…

    funkynick

Another option is to make a compass.. that always points to the world spawn point…

    funkynick
    Full Member

molgrips… I think the world size is effectively infinite, it’s something like 30 million blocks in any direction from the world spawn point, but am not sure it wraps at that point or just stops. It might take a while to travel that far to test out!

As Markie says, turn on coordinates and try to get back to 0,0,0… that should be the initial world spawn point.

It’s strange that you have jumped in right next to your daughter though, as you should come it at your last respawn point, which should be the world spawn point, or the last bed you slept in…

And that’s the possible other way of doing it… turn it off creative then once you die you should respawn at your respective spawn points… assuming those haven’t been changed by sleeping in beds.

Have got a friend who received an adult adhd diagnosis recently using the ‘Right to Choose’ through their GP… as I understand it, it basically means that you request an assessment but then get to choose who does the assessment.

This page https://adhduk.co.uk/right-to-choose/ has lots of information about it.

Just been through similar with a couple of stays in Singapore… another country that you don’t want to play fast and loose with their drug laws…

Anyway, needed to go through all my wife’s and my sons prescription meds to make sure none were on their list of controlled drugs. We knew we might have to do something as our son is on ADHD meds which are a controlled substance in this country.

We ended up having to get prior authorisation for his meds, and declare them at customs. As part of the approval we had to send through copies of the prescription etc…

I’d be surprised if morphine isn’t on a list of controlled drugs in SA, and that a similar approval would be required.

I think in essence in all this is that there is pretty much nothing stopping a manufacturer fitting a motor that is able to exceed 250W continuous, as long as the control system brings the whole e-bike to being within the limits for the exclusion of type approval.

In general the reasons why you wouldn’t do that is cost and weight, however these have to be weighed up against design effort and expense if you need to produce e-bikes for different markets with different regulations.

So it is almost certainly cheaper for the bike companies to produce a single motor and controller unit, rated for the most powerful market, which they can produce on a single production line, and which is modified using software to meet the regulations for a given market. Which is pretty much what the auto industry does… even the point were engines can be identical, except for the software which dictates how much power they can generate.

The point where that becomes unrealistic will be where the larger motor makes a measurable impact on the ‘performance’ in a market which doesn’t require that extra power…

    funkynick
    Full Member

Firstly, the motor testing spec (EN60034-1) is used for more than just the bike industry… so the tests are generic and are designed to show that the motors meet their specific ratings for the load-cycles required.

The test for Maximum Continuous Rating is there to demonstrate that the motor is capable of meeting it’s rated power output when running continuously. That has been decided in this case to mean that it needs to stop getting hotter within 30 minutes.

For the Maximum Continuous Rating test in EN60034-1 that is all you need to demonstrate, it’s there to ensure that when you buy any motor which says it’s rated for 250W, it will be able to deliver that power.

Unfortunately I don’t have access to the e-bike standard, so can’t comment too much about that, but I can imagine it’s worded in a way which states that the maximum power over a continuous period should be no more than 250W. There’s a couple of pieces to that:

    1) that whatever power is stated, it will need to meet the MCR test for that power in EN60034. This is to ensure that you get what you are sold in terms of power output.

    2) that the motor controller will need to make sure that the power output over a continuous period will not exceed the 250W stated in the standard, and this has nothing really to do with EN60034.

The sections from Tamworth through to Rugeley and beyond can be pretty grim at times… last time I rode along there it was like washboard, with some sections covered in long grass… was really quite unpleasant to ride, and needed constant peddling to keep up any speed…

Anyway, if you keep to that route and need somewhere to camp near Rugeley, let me know.

    Buy refurbished?

Got a mint condition S10e from backmarket a while ago for less than 200, and is actually smaller than the S7 edge…

Also picked up a Pixel 4a 5G for less than 150 from them, also in mint condition…

The strange thing with the ruling is that for the CRoW act (2000), camping is listed as a specific exclusion, whereas it doesn’t appear as an exclusion in the act covering public access to Dartmoor.

Caroline Lucas is currently also trying to get an amendment through Parliament which would remove camping from the list is exclusions… but by this ruling means it wouldn’t matter if it was listed in the exclusions or not as now camping is not an outdoor recreational activity.

Now, as IANAL I could be very wrong on this, but I was under the impression that the laws in this country were permissive, in that everything was allowed except those things which are detailed as being forbidden/illegal. This ruling would seem to go against that as well.

It used to be that none of the big firms would sell to the general public, even at their trade counters, but these days they all do…

So RS, Farnel/CPC, Digikey, Mouser… the pricing can vary quite a lot between them, so often worth chechlking them all, and minimum order price for free delivery isn’t too bad these days…

Am not really that fussed about a payout, just want to get things fixed… so don’t mind a no win no fee type, if it gets everything sorted, and am figuring that they should have a better idea of process than I do.

However, as suggested above, I checked home and car insurance, and have legal cover on my home insurance, so will be giving them a call tomorrow.

    Will probably also try Leigh
Day I think, as they say they have specialists in spinal injury claims.

    funkynick

    Leigh Day… that was the one I couldn’t remember…

As for why I’m not initially going through my insurance, they want us to use a claims company, so credit here agreements etc… whereas as a third party claim we aren’t having to fo any of that, and are getting a hire car paid directly by their insurance company. That’s all sorted, and booked in already.

It’s just the PI element that I’m trying to work out what to do.

And actually, their insurers were the ones initially telling me to go through a solicitor… as they “don’t want to undervalue any claim”… which isn’t actually what I am worried about. It’s more that if it continues like I had previously, then I’m possibly headed for spinal surgery again… then it’s trying to get that sorted as soon as possible, without waiting 18 months for surgery…

Just a thought… does he have an EHCP for school? It sounds like he probably should, as it’s not just for learning issues, it’s for social and health issues as well, which I think would be covered here…

Also relating to school… see if you can get in contact with the virtual school… they are specifically there for helping with looked after kids in school. Plus he should be getting the higher level of pupil premium, and the virtual school will have some say in how that gets spent for him.

Finally I’d just say that although some of the symptoms might well be similar/the same as for autism, there is a large crossover in the symptoms with attachment disorder and ADHD. So while it’s certainly possible that autism is a factor, I’d think attachment disorder is almost certainly a given for a child who has been in and out of care for the greater part of his life.

As for support from your social worker… unfortunately, as in a lot of things in life at the moment, if you don’t put yourself forward a little to get additional help, then they’ll likely not offer as they have so much work on their plates and other people who are asking… it’s not right, but it seems to be the ways things have been going for a few years.

See if you can get on some courses as well, there should be a set of fostering courses which they run, which I think you need to be doing at least a certain amount per year to keep up on your CPD. Therapeutic parenting and PACE are the currently preferred parenting techniques for the social workers and adoption support workers around my way so would be worth seeing if you can get on a course for one of those.

johndoh… with all of what you are saying, it really sounds like you are doing a pretty good job… but I know that doesn’t make it any easier when something comes out of the blue and there is no explanation or reason why something has happened. As I think I have said before, unfortunately there isn’t any discernible reason a lot of the time.

However, knowing that those sorts of things can happen means you can have some responses already sorted out between yourself and your wife, which at least means that you feel a little more in control with dealing with it when something does happen.

It’s still very much early days though… especially with the death of his mum, it really must feel like the world is against him at the moment, and he’ll have so many emotions and feelings flying around that anyone would be struggling, let alone a kid who’s had a tough start to life. So if he’s not going to talk to anyone else, then just being there and accepting who, and how, he is at the moment is probably going to be as much as you can do for the time being. Which again, is not an easy thing to do at times… so just keep posting on here and we can keep talking to you about it as things get tricky…

M10 is nominal 10mm diameter… if you look closely at the drawing for the shoulder socket screws in StuF’s link, the threaded part isn’t the same diameter as the shoulder… which would account for the difference.

Unfortunately he might not ever respond to professional help… but by providing a secure and stable base for him, it’s giving him the best opportunity to be able to if he wants to.

How is his relationship with his social worker? How is your relationship with yours? A lot of this is worth discussing with them, and trying to figure out a good way of proceeding.
