Is there a way to stop the map rotating on OA so that North is always up?

I asked the question and got the following answer:

    Hi Kenny

So the short answer is you can’t, but the the slightly longer answer goes like this:

There’s the pinch gesture, which is what everybody uses to zoom in and out.

And, if you happen to turn your fingers a bit while you are pinching, then the map will rotate.  If you meant to do that great, if not then it’s a pain.

But there is another gesture which you can use to zoom in or out without any rotation.  This also works in Apple maps etc.

What you do is: you double-tap: “tap-tap”, and on the second tap you keep your finger held down, then you can slide your finger up, or down to zoom in or out without rotating. Lift finger off to finish the zoom.

    Hope that helps a bit,

    Cheers,

    Dominic

    @avdave2 & @goldfish24

Thanks for the comments. For info I’m using a 6500K LED bulb that I randomly selected from Amazon Linky. I had previously tried Tungsten light and Fluorescent light and used the White Balance settings on the camera but the results were not great.

The Alfa GTV6 sample above was done using the Auto white balance setting on the camera. However, I think the original, shot on Barfen 100ASA film, was a bit bluish to start with. I have not done any post processing other than cropping.

I did try to use the camera flash but got a big shadow from the adapter along the bottom of the frame.

Here’s another couple of samples from Kodachrome 64 film. Happy to receive comments again 😊

@inbred456 – the propsahft is always turning when the car’s in motion as it’s connected to the rear wheels via the rear axle!

I’ve got hundreds of slides that I want to scan – the cost is somewhat prohibitive.

So I’ve made a slide copier attachment to fit on the front of my digital camera (Canon S5iS in this case). The results are pretty good  – well good enough for me!

It consists of two aluminium pieces turned in my lathe and a bit of plastic downpipe. The camera end is a snug fit on the lens and the outer piece has a rectangular hole in it to suit 35mm slides. The internals are painted matt black.

In use I set the camera to Super Macro and Aperture Priority. Illimination is from a daylight LED bulb in a desk lamp, bouncing off a white wall.

The pictures come out slightly distorted (not rectangular) but are easily cropped.

First picture is a sample, second picture is the unit attached to the camera :

Nilfisk. I’ve had several and the only issue has been the start/stop valve eventually gives up the ghost. Replacing the part (assuming you can get it) requires a complete strip down of the unit.

I recently bought a damaged machine, dumped the plastic housing and built the motor/pump into a new housing so that the gubbins are much easier to reach.

I think that manufacturers/magazines/whatever should be quoting bike weights without tyres (rather than without pedals). Tyre choice makes a big difference in overall bike weight.

I don’t use this every day but it addresses the problem of where to keep your bars while the fork is removed for servicing.

It’s made up of a bit of bar turned to 1.125″ diameter attached via a plate to a photographic clamp.

Parking sensors can be checked for operation by listening to them – they emit a rapid clicking sound when working correctly. It’s best to use a stick between the sensor and your ear or use a mechanics stethoscope like what I do.

A faulty sensor will be silent or be irregular in its sound.

Weird… are you people not using tubeless sealant? Because all the issues this seeks to address happen regularly for me

Get the pitch forks out – we still use tubes (with Presta valves) .

We also have QR on the rear wheels 😁

Go for it. I’ve had a 2007 159 3.2 Q4 for 10 years now and it’s been fine. Don’t go getting one of those diseasel versions though!

I should point out that I’ve had 7 Alfas in the last 35+ years – but I’m not biased in any way 😊 .

For the best long term corrosion resistance Hot Dip Galavised bolting is the only way to go (other than 304/316 stainless). Bear in mind that special HDG nuts are required too. These have the threads appropriately oversize to compensate for the Zinc thickness.

You don’t see Zinc Plated (BZP/Passivated etc.) fasteners on motorway armco barriers or on any steel stuctural work.

I like Carron Valley trails too. Also the gravel route along the south reservoir road to Todholes, across the B818 and into Sir John de Graham woods and then a wee bit of B818 back to the village.

Life’s too short to be having ugly vehicles – stick with what you’ve got (with higher profile tyres if required) or choose something you both admire 😊

Fun guessing where they did the filming though

The helicopter take off sequence (and possibly some others) was done at Cumbernauld Airport. We were walking in the area when we saw a huge amount of filming wagons and the copter.

Give John Ritchie at Pro-Grip a call. He’s not cheap but neither is he a bullshitter. He’s in Larbert so not far from Stirling.

Alternatively, right next door to Pro-Grip is Ewan Lawson (DPF Doctor) who might be useful. I’ve no experience of Ewan Lawson as I’m a petrolhead!

My vote goes to touch screens in cars. Impossible to operate without taking your eyes off the road for (too) long periods. Prone to misfire when your finger is jolted off target. And they look manky with greasy fingerprints.

In my early days of gas welding I kept a lit candle nearby for torch lighting purposes (I didn’t have a sparker). One day I was lying on the ground welding a sill on my car and I noticed my knee was getting quite warm. This prompted me to turn the torch off to investigate. When I looked down at my knee it was obvious that my overalls were on fire. Thankfully some vigorous patting and blowing got the fire out with no damage to my jeans.

It turns out that the candle had set fire to my knee 🤐

I bought a sparker the next day 😊

What about that cyclist in the first picture – did you tell him to get his seat up about 6″?
