I made my own slide copier – attached to the front of my camera. I set the camera set in macro mode and shine a daylight bulb onto a white wall. Works surprisingly well but I wouldn’t want to be doing too many slides.

I’m in the process of renovating a 1982 Alfa romeo GTV and during this I found that some of the push button switches weren’t working. Replacements cost silly money if you can find them so I chose to get some alternative rocker switches and make the centre console more ergonomic (IMO).

I also wanted to replace the ancient push button radio cassette with something a bit more modern. But the Kenwood unit I fitted has a maximum installation angle of 30° so I had to make a transition piece to reduce the standard Alfa angle of 35° to 25°.

Now the purists will not approve but this is the before and after:

When opening a jar of Nutella, using a small utilty knife, I firsly cut around the outer circumference of the gold sealing foil/paper – using the glass edge as a guide. Then I cut round the inner circumference of the foil/paper (again using the glass edge as a guide).

Ideally this yields a perfect sealing ring (with no air gaps) on top of the jar.

    A word of warning:

I once dropped an M6 nut in the engine bay of a car I was working on. I searched thoroughly but couldn’t find it. The spark plugs had been removed prior to this and the holes were open to the world – I therefore concluded that the nut had fallen through one of the sprark plug holes into the cylinder.

No problem I thought – I had one of those three fingered grabber tools for retrieving out of reach things. I put a small magnet into the fingers, inserted the tool and magnet through a spark plug hole and started fishing around.

Much to my surprise (not now) the magnet fell out of the fingers (probably helped by sticking to the steel cylinder wall) leaving me with no option but to remove the cylinder head.

I never did find the nut.

It looks in helluva decent condition, what’s the mileage?

GTV has done 84000 miles. bodyworlk is in very good condition as is most of the underneath. I’ve had to weld up two holes in the floor but that’s better than I expected.

You’re right about the extra pages in the handbook for jobbies but in my case I’d need 52 pages (one for each job). Most are silly wee things though.

    Here it is:

    It’s a 1982 GTV 2.0 ( I would have liked a GTV6, like I had before, but they’re all a bit too expensive now).

Car is currently in dry dock while I sort out an extensive job list.

I plan to change the wheels as I’ve never really liked that style (Purists will be offended of course but I’ll keep the originals – just in case I ever sell the car).

I’ve just ordered DND Gloves for £8.99 from the Giro website. There are indeed some strange price variations.

Not carbon, but we’ve got these here Pro ones on our bikes (MTB) – absolutely no problems even if it has single bolt clamp.

Our 40th wedding anniversary (Ruby) today – blimey that crept up quickly 😍

Had a grand day out – lunch in Auchterarder, windy (very) walk around the Queen’s course at Gleneagles (course closed so no golfists), coffee and cake in Gleneagles Hotel 😃

At high school we had a latin teacher who’s real name was Mr Wolf. His nickname was Canis Lupus.

At work we had boss who’s forename was Nick – nickname Nasty Nick. He insisted that he needed an office rather than dwell with the plebs in the open plan area. So he had a storage cupboard converted to his office – he was henceforth  known as The C__t in the Cupboard.

The prices for these relatively simple parts are horrendous.

I had to replace the compressor inlet/outlet pipe assembly – £300 for the part.  The crimping on the pipe where the flexible joins the rigid pipe into the condenser had corroded and split.

The other pipe into the condenser was showing similar corrosion albeit less severe (this was the £430 pipe). I made an aluminium clamping block to compress the crimped section and hopefully stave off failure.

Any future problems – I’ll be giving Bee Cool a call.

I also replaced the expansion valve as part of the diagnostics – the genuine Alfa part was £198! I fitted a Vauxhall valve costing £45

Good to know. I’d be interested to hear costs for your pipes as I’ve been quoted £430 for a new air con pipe for my Alfa 159.

Home made for me. Reclaimed 4″ x 2″ timber joists with a 3mm ply sheet on top. Bolted to concrete floor and walls.

Toolboards from reclamed plywood packing cases. Old kitchen cupboard for some storage. Old metal microfiche drawers for tools.

Any idea what a shop would charge to fit a headset if i supplied it? Am i better off investing in a headset press so i can do it myself in future?

Why not get the LBS to supply and fit then all responsibility for work lies with them?

My best bit of advice is to not let your mother-in-law drive you to the fracture clinic.

The route to our clinic included a section with those square traffic calming pads (the ones where you can minimise lift by straddling the high bit).

Well, my MIL chose to hit every one on the high bit bang on centre with her left side. Cue me megawincing at each impact as I was jerked out of my seat. I swear the pain was worse than the actual break incident.

My break healed up OK but I’ve now got a golf ball sized growth around the fracture site.

This has a nice saddle bag, should be quite robust:
