… but nothing is as good as making your own. No time at all to throw the stuff in the bread maker for the dough.

We did that with our bread machine for the first time last night. It was the nicest pizza I've had for years. Made even better because the kids (4 & 2.5yrs) made their own too.

Data transfer rates are superior with an internal drive (unless the external drive is e-sata).

You still need an external device(s) (DVD/USB stick/ext.drive) for your backups though.

If you want some software to manage your backups GFI Backup is pretty good and free.

You can use it to manage backups/restores and also to synch to an external source (USB stick/drive etc).

Yup, had loads of physio which cost me a fortune and amounted to nothing. Tried Cortizone injections which helped a bit.

I used to be a pretty good volleyball player (which probably caused, but definately exacerbated the problem), I can't play at all now.

I've just lived with it for the last 5 years – would be interested to hear about any new treatments. Surgery wasn't discussed as an option when I was being treated.

Before you wipe the drive, download a copy of copy+[/url]. You can use this to (attempt) to salvage and programs that were on the disk before your box died.

If you're not too bothered about saving the recordings, just buy a new disk and do it yourself.

I did mine; it's straight forward as long as you use the correct disk. I upgraded it from 40Gb to 500Gb.

See here or here for more info.

It just needs 'Forum Summary – Bike – Chat – Classifieds' Links at the bottom of the page, too.

+1 I view the site on my phone and getting back to the thread list is a (minor) pain in the bum.

perhaps the 'home' key on your keyboard?

See above, I don't have a keyboard

Also, that would only take you to the top of the page and not back to the thread list.

The worst is forgetting to put the paddle on. You get a sort of baked porridge.

I did that too – I was showing off to some friends staying with us. Went on and on about how good the machine was, how delicious fresh bread is and promised to make them a Raisin and Cinnamon loaf (normally fabulous). After several bottles of beer I toddled off to make it. Next morning, a bizarre porridge cake and much p*ss taking.

They've since bought one though (SD255).

D_S. Nice one. Thanks for that – I'll add it to my list of jobs to do. Although it'll probably end up being filled with Bob the Builder and Noddy stuff.

Disco_stu, when you say an old x-box, do you mean the original one? Pre-360?

I bought one when my wife was pregnant with our first born as I figured that as I would have no social life from that point on, I may as well play some games.

I used it about 10 times. It is now boxed and in the loft.

I'd heard about turning it into a media machine but never got around to doing it. Is it worth it?

You sir, are an idiot-hole on so many levels.

    Really? Please enlighten me.

I like my music, I just don't 'get' Adam 'n' Joe; I prefer music enthusiasts on, what I thought was, a music enthusiasts station – 6Music.

That's my opinion and I'm entitled to it – or am I an idiot-hole because my opinion is different to yours?

    freddyg

I only ever listened to adam & joe. I listened to the podcast and the live show. Now I feel acute frustration cos they left me without any text the nation.

    They've gone???!!!

Fantastic! 6 music returns to our house at the weekends once more.

I'd like 6music to return to their early ethos of having presenters who are into music, rather than comics/celaaabrities and the music secondary to their ego.

+1 for the Allen Carr method – in fact it was the STW that introduced it to me almost 3 years ago. I've since introduced it to a dozen of my friends/family and all but two have had the same success as I did. It costs about the same as a packet of tabs

I tried to stop several times – only to get started again by having the odd smoke – thinking it'll be all right and I could stop again. Wrong.

Good luck, you won't regret it.

Not sure she satisfies any of your criteria (apart from being female) but she has a magnificent voice.

Mariza is a Fado singer from Portugal. I saw her on Jools ages ago and was hooked.

10,000 maniacs is another consideration – Natalie Merchant has a great voice. The MTV unplugged album is lovely.

Some kids are scared of Santa?

Yup. My 6 year old niece is absolutely terrified at the thought of some bloke going in to her bedroom while she's sleeping. Even when her mum explained that it was to leave pressies, she still asked if mum could tell santa to leave the presents on the landing.

+1 Please don't send the mail.

Her IT is outsourced but your missus knows as much about it as them? Sorry, but she's taking on someone else's work, she needs to let go of that. Other people are being paid to do it and she's undermining their position.

I apologise if that comes across as harsh, but MrsG is going through something very similar too – trying to solve the whole of her business problems single handedly. It's a team game.

I've got a reasonably decent separates set up in the lounge (Arcam CD, Rega Planar 3 turntable, Audiolab amp, Monitor Audio speakers etc).

I bought a set of Bose speakers that I use in the Dining room, driven by the above on 'channel B'. They sound great.

On the strength of them, I bought a Bose sound dock thingy for the ipod and shoved it in the kitchen. It also sounds great.

However, neither the dining room or the kitchen are used as locations for specific audiophile enjoyment; the music in there is purely background. As such, I find my Bose kit to be more than adequate.

    Horses for courses.

As it is only 5 months old, you can take it back to the place you bought it from and demand a replacement. After 6 months old, it's up to you to prove that the problem was present at the time of purchase. Or something like that.

If your account is locked – you needs root to unlock it. If you want to change the password, you can do it yourself – if the account isn't locked.

Did your mate try logging in a few times incorrectly? That may have caused the lock.

    Yes. I work away.

I talk to my kids every night before they go to bed and read them a story too (they're only little – aged 4 and 2.5). It's good to see them and helps keeps me sane.

I got one for my 21st birthday present – after months of:

Mum: "What do you want for your 21st"
Me: "I'd love a camera – an SLR would be cool"
    Mum: "Are you sure?"
Me: "Yep. I've always wanted an SLR. A Minolta X-300 starter kit. It's not too expensive"

The joy on my face when presented with the box, at my party (in front of my mates) was apparent to all. The uncomfortable silence continued when I was urged to open the box and my crest fallen expression was obvious. I even tried an "Oh! A trouser press! Lovely"… but they all saw through it.

It was 22 years ago. I still have it. I have used it four times. I'm not bitter.

Phone your prospective employer and be straight with them. A note/email could go amiss, but maybe they'll remember the young man who had the balls to ring them up?

Well, my MP990 arrived and it's really, really good.

Photo printing quality is superb and the scanner is great. I can do a quick scan to pdf and e-mail it or save it direct to a PC – this can be controlled either from the PC or the printer. Printing from memory cards is easy and means that we'll probably print considerably more photos of the kids rather than just dumping them on a disk somewhere. Also the scanning of negatives is a doddle.

Yes it was expensive, but so far I'm impressed.

Any one want to buy a Canon Pixma IP4000 with a set of spare inks? :D

Try and steer clear of the M6. It's not nice.

I live in the east mids (near Grantham) and have just moved work to Bristol. A round trip of 320 miles. Unfortunately, I didn't have much choice, I was made redundant and an old contact offered me this within 2 days of finishing.

I drive down on a monday morning and rent a room in a house for three nights a week – heading home on Thursday night. I then work at home on a Friday.

It's not ideal, and I miss my wife and kids like you wouldn't believe.

I've got the Canon Pixma MP 970, and they do a few others. Seems to do everything you could want and had a higher rez scanner than the others I looked at.

Inks still expensive, just bought some 'compatible' ones so I'll let you know….

I'm interested to know how you get on with the compatible cartridges. I'm sat at home now waiting to take delivery of my shiny new MP990.

I's overkill for my immediate needs, but the fact that it's got a high res scanner and can scan and print direct from 35mm film negatives was what persuaded me to spend the extra. It also does the usual printing direct from SD / CF cards thing too.

I've got this for sale if you're interested? clicky-linky

It's not overly torquey, but is very comfortable, very reliable and very within your budget.

I can't afford to keep it and the Blackbird, so one of them has to go….. and it's not going to be the Blackbird. The ad says it is in Bottesford (near Nottingham), but I've just started work in Bristol – I'm staying down here during the week so could bring the bike down.

I drink a lot of the stuff and IMO Talisker and Dalwhinnie are too bloody firery,
Are you sure? Dalwhinnie is about as delicate as it gets!

My mate who works in the whisky shop in glasgow agrees saying that most islay malts are that way due to the water up there

Get your mate to enrol on a training course – Dalwhinnie is a Highland malt.

The Speyside's are quite a safe bet. Also consider "Rocks" by Bruichladdich. Available in Sainsburys around £20 – £25 and bloody lovely.
