MrsG and I have discussed this several times, but never investigated it further. What sort of prices are you talking about (for a family of 4)?

+1 for Octonauts; our two love them. Although WTF are the walking miniature vegetables all about?

We accidentally slipped over to CBBC before Christmas and caught an episode of Big Babies. The kids (5 and 3.5yrs) looked on in complete dumbfoundment as I p!ssed myself laughing at it. Great stuff – reminded me of Vic & Bob doing Otis and Marvin.

Our 1995 DC01 died in September this year. The only parts I have had to replace on it were a wand (<£5 from e-bay), the brush (£6 from e-bay) and the sole-plate £15 from Dyson); it was ace. It replaced a Henry.

We found that, in our house, it was like comparing a football team from the conference to one from the premiership. The Dyson was that much better. That’s why we’ve just replaced it with another Dyson.

One account, both salaries are paid in (I earn about 5x as much as her – she’s part time and I have a decent income).

The money is there for the family – we don’t do the your money, my money thing. We’re a partnership: What’s mine is hers and what’s hers is hers too.

    Oh.

I have recently consumed a fair amount of produce from the Stringers Brewery of Ulverston. Very nice it is too – I particularly like their Golden Ale.

I was at the fish counter in Asda* the other day and got talking to a lass who was just having a whole salmon chopped up for her. She had four moderate sized steaks and the remainder (mid fish to the tail end) popped in a foil container with some pre-prepared buttery stuff. She explained that this was her Christmas roast. Dead simple, just put the whole lot in the oven and bake. Apparently delicious. The whole lot cost her about £12 iirc (it was farmed salmon and on offer at the time).

Sorry Hora, +1 for you not having flu.

I’m 42 and have had flu once, I thought I was going to die.

Quite a few bad colds though. I also go for the drink-yourself-to-sleep method but I use cheap whiskey (Grouse, Bells etc.), save the good stuff until my taste buds return.

    Short and peculiar.

Puff pastry is pointless (may as well use a doily) and the other beers are too light.

A Comic Strip production with a Motorhead sound track. Very good (or so I thought 20odd years ago) :D

Nope, not just you. I’m similar, just can’t keep the tears in at times. Films are bad, but children in need is especially traumatic.

Have often wondered if it is a reaction to my father being an emotional vacuum.

We bought ours from Barker and Stonehouse[/url]. They sell nice stuff. Might be a bit far to travel though.

My Dad (aged 67) has a Nissan Quiche. He bought it for the elevated driving position for my step-mum – she got the heebegeebies after they were involved in an accident; they were run off the road by someone overtaking on a blind corner so she likes to be able to see as fas ahead as possible. He doesn’t like it very much. He misses the V8 Camry that was written off in the aforementioned.

I did this in Bristol for a few months this time last year – lodged, that is. Financially, it helped a great deal – miles cheaper than a scutty B&B.

I paid £70 a week for three nights (travelled south very early on a Monday and returned north on a Thursday night. I used my own bedding, but towels were provided.

In the end, I moved out as the landlady occasionally used to let her Labrador sleep on my bed when I wasn’t there – unfortunately, I’m allergic to dogs, so I wasn’t too chuffed. She denied it until one Monday when I returned to find paw prints on the bed. She also turned the lounge into another bedroom for her and the dog, so the only place to sit and unwind in the evening was in my bedroom.

I’m about to start a new job next week (after 3 months being unemployed. Yay!) and have been offered a £255/month car allowance – although I believe that it is only available to be spent on the firms ECU (Essential Car User) scheme. I’m not sure whether there will be an additional mileage allowance on top. I hope so as I’ll be travelling from the East Midlands to Barrow-in-Furness on a weekly basis for the next few months (up to 500miles/week). Apparently, all will be explained on the induction course next week.

Can anyone come up with a good argument as to why it was a good idea to privatise rail?

I use Scan a lot, but in person rather than mail order as they’re within kicking distance and their delivery used to be stupidly expensive

If you are a member of avforums, you can get free delivery from Scan is you follow the link from the avforums site.

Twinnings Everyday mainly, but TeaPigs English Breakfast when I’m feeling decadent. Clipper and Coop Fairtrade are not too bad, but I always defer to Twinnings for general brewage.

    I didn’t enjoy it.

My Brother-in-law bought it for me on DVD as a birthday pressie saying it was the best thing since sliced bread. I put an evening aside and watched it….. with an ever increasing feeling of disappointment.

I should have known that I wouldn’t have enjoyed it – Mark Kermode liked it. I find that we are polar opposites in what we regard as good films. If he says its rubbish, I’ll probably enjoy it and vice versa.

Kevevs – I also despised shaving; but it is a necessary evil. I have to look smart for work.

This whole shaving thing is not all about how amazing the razor is. It’s about the quality of the shave. Try it, you might like it. I know I did.

    Edit: I’m 42.

    8TB of Qnap TS419P loveliness here :D

I’ve got it running in RAID5 to maximise available space while providing a little redundancy; I had one drive fail a couple of months ago, but it was replaced under warranty. No data lost.

It is massive overkill for what we actually need, but I wanted a 4 bay unit. It won’t be too long before my kids start dowloading stuff, saving MP3s etc, etc and the cost of disks wasn’t too bad so I stuffed it with 4x 4TB drives. This gives me a usable (almost) 6TB.

Ref the lather, I have some shave cream (Geo Trumper), put a dab on my wet chin and use the brush to lather around my face. I get a lovely thick lather, very quickly. What soap are you using?

Ref the blades, I guess it is all down to trial and error. I have a Gillette Tech from e-bay and really didn’t like the Derbys. Feathers, Personna platinums and Iridium supers I really liked. Treet Iridiums (from Pakistan) are pretty good for me too.

If I understand some of the more knowledgeable chaps on here – I am using a pretty mild razor, so it allows me to get away with more aggressive blades.

Now, I can’t wait to have a shave.

Strange that, me too nowadays. I used to postpone shaving as often as I could.

I’ve been working my way through the sample pack of blades and have a couple of favourites already; the rest will be given away when I’ve gone through the set if any one is interested – one or two blades used pet pack… Will include some Derbys as I just didn’t get on with them. Feathers and Iridium Supers on the other hand – wow!
