    slight hijack/

I’ve just been looking on the happy donkey website, as I also have the filter with the single hole, I’ve spotted the bottomless filters; are they worth getting?

I had exactly the same issue as the OP with my Gaggia classic. I was gutted.

In the end, I narrowed it down to the over-fine grind of the coffee I was using – I was trying different types of supermarket available pre-ground coffee and the offending one was Illy. I have since tried Illy again without any problems though, so maybe it was a dodgy batch??

Are they connected to their power source at the same time? A laptop of mine used to shut down the ethernet port if disconnected as part of the power management settings.

    What about an old Blackbird?

I bought one a few years ago for my commute of just under 100 miles a day, it’s fantastic. Will cruise on the motorway at low revs, has a turbine smooth motor and a bit of poke should you want to ‘make progress’.

Just tried my Merkur with a Feather blade for the first time. Wow, it was good.

However, I really needed my styptic pen afterwards; ouchy stingyness, but not unpleasant.

Just read up on the Alum block thing with interest as I had a poor DE shave this morning. I’m away from home and hadn’t brought any spare blades. Midway through my third shave (with a Derby blade), I felt it start to pull – the result is a nice smooth shave, but a slightly raw neck. The aftershave balm has helped a little but I look like I’ve been slapped

, sorry I have no photos of that Mr. Toad – I’m afraid he didn’t last.

You wore him out? Poor bloke – just a spent husk of his former self.

CFH, is there any more tea? This is a bit stewed now.

FAO whoever put the tag up ^^^^

Have you done the arithmetic? I have :-)

    With a fusion I got 3 shaves
    With a mach 3, I get 5 shaves
With a DE, I get (max) 3 shaves.

So with the DE I need to change the blades more often. However, I prefer the feel of the post-shave results (so does MrsG) and it’s cheaper:

Fusion = £2.12 per blade (£16.99 for 8 from Boots)
    Mach3 = £1.43 per blade (£11.46 for 8 from Boots)
    DE = £0.17 per blade (£0.84 for 5 Derby blades from shaving.ie)

Therefore, the fusion will cost me £15 a month, the mach3 £6.13 a month and the DE £1.70 a month – approx.

The price may go up a bit as I try different DE blades, but should still fall short of the Mach3.

I get 2 or 3 shaves per blade. As soon as it starts to drag I swap for a new one. I used to get 4 or 5 out of my Mach3, but the blades cost a fortune by comparison. I do seem to have a wire-brush-like beard though.

I’m still going through my 90 blade sample pack so haven’t decided which are best for my razors.

….the metal head just doesn’t slide over my skin in the same way that the plastic Boots one does.

What soap are you using? Are you getting a thick creamy lather <fnarr, fnarr>?

I don’t get it. Surely it’s the blade that’s the important part with one of these – the razor is simply holding the blade in the right place. Surely a cheapy one does just a good a job of that as these niche expensive ones people are suggesting?

The blade is important, but I find the angle at which it is presented to your face and the space between the blade and the surround make quite a bit of difference.

I have two razors – a Gilette Tech I bought off eBay, and a Merkur Progress my missus bought me for Christmas. I get quite different results with the two.

With the Tech, I find that I prefer Personna Platinums over anything else (Feathers included). Last night, I put a new Personna Platinum into the Merkur for the first time and found it to be distinctly average. In the Merkur, I’ve used a couple of Derby’s and found them to be pretty good. After using them in the Tech, I almost threw them away; dreadful.

My first go was terrifying but didn’t cut myself. I’ve had a couple of nicks over the last few months, but only when I’ve been a bit slap-dash.

I bought an old Gillette Tech off eBay for less than a tenner, a sample pack of 90 blades and I already used a brush and soap. It was a complete revelation. Give it a go, it doesn’t cost much and gives a great result. Plus you actually have a pleasurable experience.

Edit. The missus prefers it too and even bought me a Merkur progress for Christmas.

I have just chucked my mach3 after 3 months of shaving with my safety razors. I kept the mach3 as I have an early rush off on a Monday morning, so wanted to have a quick shave. Even with a new blade, after the safety razor, the mach3 felt blunt. It dragged.

I wish I’d started this years ago. Nice smooth shaves and the rash has completely gone. :D

Don’t buy new. Go second hand and save yourself a fortune, then sell on when you’re done.

Phil & Teds are excellent if you’re planning on a second.

    Hope all goes well.

I’ve just taken delivery of an 09 BMW 320D and am getting an average of 53mpg. A colleague has an 07 520D and gets 50+ too and he hammers it everywhere.

I’ve just watched Lorraine Pascale on the telly. Hubba-hubba! Amazing cakes. I’m tempted to go and start baking right now.

I’d never heard of her, but Nigella has some serious competition – she’s lovely!

Although by the look of her, she doesn’t eat any of them :D

TIP: When applying butter to thinly sliced bread, use the back of a desert spoon. It won’t tear the bread.

When I discovered this and showed my Mum some 30 years ago, she clipped me around the ear and scolded me for being ‘not right’.

We’ve got a ‘T’ reg one (1998 I think) and have had it since 2001.

It’s a pretty good car and very reliable. The four wheel drive system also worked quite well to aid traction in the recent dodgy weather.

We’re about to sell it as we need something more economical to run. If I could afford a newer diesel one, I’d buy it without question.

    +1 thepurist.

I’m in the same place as you right now. Several jobs in the last four years does not a good CV make.

I’ve had medication in the past (Citalopram helped quite a bit) but not for about 5 years. I’m about to go back to the GP and try again as I’ve started with exactly the same symptons as albacore. Apathy, lethargy, inability to concentrate – it’s like someone has just turned my brain off!

Good luck Albacore, you aren’t alone and there is help available.

The only problem with scoots is the blind predjudice of 99% of bikers….

I guess I am one of them.

I’ve had a go on a couple while on holiday and just didn’t like them. I’m sure with a bit of time I’d get used to them though. Anyway, if they didn’t ‘work’, they wouldn’t be so popular!

I also confess to having occasionaly looked on enviously at the weather protection and fuel economy from the pilot seat of my Blackbird.

I went six (or so) years ago – The Who were on (and abso-****-lutely awesome they were too). It was a really good experience.

We’d only ever been to Glasto before that and the IOW was just a bit more chilled/less extreme/nice*. We had a great time.

The biggest advantage is that you can, if you want, just step outside the festival and go do something completely ‘normal’ if you want. We’d had enough one night, so had a wander and found a nice little restaurant.

    *delete as appropriate.

I did 2 in a motorbike accident almost two years ago. Really, really very painful. You have my sympathy.

In order of increasing magnitudes of pain:

    Breathing < dumping < sleeping < coughing < laughing < sneezing

You really, really don’t want to sneeze.

I was back at work trhe following day and co-codamol and brufen really helped get me through.

Get your friend to tell the ex-lodger that, as he’s no longer letting rooms, he didn’t need them so they were destroyed.

What does the ex-lodger want to know for? Seems a bit odd unless your mate is holding back the deposit.

EDIT: must learn to type with more than one digit.

We stayed here twice, two and three years ago for friends 40th birthday parties. It was really very good. The accomodation isn’t luxurious (bunk beds) but all you do in that part of the building is sleep anyway. It has the added bonus of a fully set up bar that the owners will stock up with your chosen beers – I think we had three on tap.

The games room was great for the kids, as it meant they had somewhere away from the adults when the weather got nasty.

The barbeque area was pretty cool too. It’s covered so it meant that we could cook outside without having to worry about weather.

The only downside for you, DD, is that it isn’t in Wales as per your OP.
