Another IAM rider here. Well worth the £120 (or thereabouts) I paid for it. The only downside to joining my local IAM group was the club itself. Not particularly welcoming of new members and an odd attitude to non-IAM motorcyclists. However, this was not the experience of a mate of mine at the other end of the country. His club was superb.

Bikesafe is well worth doing too.

Thanks folks. Some good starters to go at. Sorry for the tardy reply – I’ve been out on my bike. Yay! 8)

Thanks Edlong. I think you’re right, but the thought of being away from them would break me. I couldn’t bear it.

EDIT: It’s our wedding anniversary tomorrow too. Joy.

    Bizarre.

I’m in an almost identical situation with mine.

She bumped my (work) car in an empty car park and I went ballistic, not because of the damage, but because it was the straw that broke the camels back. She spends more money than we have, she’s lazy, she’s piled on weight to the stage that I’ve started to find her physically repulsive – there’s more that I won’t bore you with.

I want to leave for a number of reasons but just can’t bring myself to do it. I couldn’t walk away from our two kids – they’re the most important thing in the world to me.

    F*ck me, I’m miserable now :|

Sorry Warton. No help, but at least you’re not the only one.

The alpkit bulb, recommended above, is very good – and for £50 you can buy three and spend a fiver on pies.

I just hired a plasload gun from the local too hire place. Great piece of kit that had me looking around for stuff to nail! If I could afford one (and justify it!), I’d buy one in a shot.

As for maintenance of it – all handled by the tool hire shop.

Oh! We were up at the bungalow too on Saturday. We bumped onto a couple of guys from Canada who we met at K-Tree last year.

Did you see the Norwegian “entertainment”?

    Where are you Amplebrew?

I’m based in Kirk Michael ….

I should be in The Mitre tomorrow (and nightly thereafter) for a half of Shandy – we camp at Glen Wyllin each year 8)

Keep your eyes peeled for a red-faced, overweight, middle aged IT person and come say hello.

Dad of two here – one aged 5, one aged 6.5.

Don’t bother with the books, they won’t help. NCT classes were a reasonable starter for 10 but we relied on instinct and the selective taking of advice from friends/family who’d been there and done that.

The missus bought and read a couple of books but the advice given was conflicting. She bought me the book by that Ford woman which made me so cross, I dropped it in the recycling after a few chapters.

Good luck. Everything changes. It’s ace.

EDIT: +1 for STW = Dadsnet!!

Do either of your employers operate a home use scheme? Some schemes allow you to buy a full copy of Office for the cost of the media. I bought Office 2007 pro for £10. Visio pro and Project were another £10 each. However, now if left their employ, I’ve had to uninstall them…. oooooookay 8)

Muddy – switching from car to bike for my daily commute meant that my commute time was reduced from 1 to 2 hours each way, to 40 to 45 minutes each way.

20k miles a year for the last 5 years on my 1997 Blackbird.

Commute all year around and in (almost) all weather. Servicing costs are minimal as most can be done at home (it’s carb’d rather than injected). I can get between 40 and 45 mpg regardless of how much I ride it (apart from when I’ve taken it onto a track 8) ). Tyres can last up to 8000 miles if I opt for something multi-compound and not too sticky (faves are Michelin Pilot Road 2 or 3, Dunlop Roadsmart and Avon Storm 2).

There is very little cost difference between this and my car – I do not save money. However, what I do save is time and lots of it!

What about karting? We recently had a go, it was relatively cheap and lasted an hour – which was plenty (managed to get 60 laps in about 45 minutes of driving). Great fun and completely knackering.

Can’t help sorry but stay close enough to ride to the trails.

£6.90 now and the machine doesn’t give change, so £7 a day #ripoff

Would you prefer £7 to park or £5 a head to ride Grizedale? Pretty good value if you ask me. Someone has to maintain/develop it.
