What model of printer is it? If it isn’t natively wireless enabled, you can get a wifi adapter for a few pounds.

    Is it difficult? Not really
Is it worth it? Probably not
Will I void warranty? Might do
Why should I bother? (other than for this back-up) Dunno.

Sorry :( Just noticed the phone’s being collected tomorrow.

You won’t need to back up your apps as Google Play will retain your list of apps on-line (google play > menu > my apps) or something.

Your contacts should all be gmail contacts – just re-sync when you get the replacement phone.

Music and Photos should be on the SD card – or just transfer straight to PC as above.

Settings…. have you customised it significantly?

The only thing that may be of concern are your SMS messages. There’s an app for that.

Have you got the time (or inclination) to root it? If yes, then Titanium backup will do the lot.

Can you use a bluetooth ear-piece to receive calls? I have a plantronics one paired with both my personal and work phone. Works really well.

Are you putting the monies paid against tax?

    Aaarrgghh!!! There it goes again?!

I’ve had a look at my payslip. The companies contribution isn’t shown, but the company deducts £120 per month from my salary as a “private use charge”. Is that what you mean?

I’m a 40% tax payer and my code is 415L.

Ask me something easy like designing a network infrastructure and I’m all over it!

My car allowance is pretty much the same, yes you will be taxed on the £4900, in my case @40% tax so I see around £250 per month. However, you will also have the car tax deduction back so if this was £200 per month you are now plus £450 per month.

On top of this you will get 15 per business mile (in my case 21p) at 50mpg you will make a “profit” plus the Government entitles you to 45p per mile for first 10k miles per a year so at the end of the year you can claim the tax back on the difference I.e. if you did 10k business miles: ( (0.45*10000) – (0.15*10000) ) * 40% = £1200 tax back.

Many apologies for the slight hijack, but Wurzelcube has got me thinking…

My company also pays me 0.15p / mile for fuel. I had no idea I could potentially claim the difference on the first 10k miles. Does this apply in all cases?

My car is a leased jobbie; the company gives me a small allowance (£250 / month gross) and I pay an additional £120 on top (and get nailed for taxes etc). Can I claim the additional mileage?

I tried to read up about it on the HMRC site, but I seem to have a weird word blindness for this kind of stuff (don’t get me started on pensions!)

    TIA

We had a booster seat at first for young MasterG. We soon ditched it because when he nodded off, he slipped off the seat. We replaced it with an iso-fix high back jobbie that cost a fortune. But he’s secure and comfortable now.

I have noticed an increasing number of ladies employing the term “Bless you” when what they actually mean is “thank you”…

HAVE YOU BEEN F***ING ORDAINED???? NO??!!! Right, under the patio for you.

Pubs a-plenty. Limited shops, a few independant ones in Ulverston. Cafes in Ulverston (Gillams is good). A few good restaurants near by – Cartmel has a Michelin starred jobbie and there’s a selection around Windermere.

Things to do? Take your bike :D

So they amended my tax code so the 4 months additional tax at the high deduction level was compensated by 8 months of a lower tax code, but didn’t really compensate for the 2 and a bit grand of extra tax they’d taken in the meantime. Who else can admit an error and then insist to pay it back interest free over the best part of a year!

That seems to be the default option. When this happened to me, I called them and requested a cheque, I had it less than a week later.

Conversely, when I was self employed, I paid an accountant a small fortune to sort my accounts out for me – this stuff may as well be written in Chinese, I just don’t understand it. The accountant made a number of blunders resulting in me receiving a £350 fine for late filing, an unexpected £8k corporation tax bill one year and another for £1750 the following year. The accountant realised they’d cocked up mightily and paid the fine and half of the £1750 bill.

Never had a problem with my daughter, but did have a few with my son.

First was on out first outing to my parents house with him – he was a couple of weeks old. He was laid across my lap having a doze; I felt him tense up and emit an enourmous paaaarrrpp… I thought it was gas until I noticed the spreading brown stain from the small of his back/top of nappy, up his spine and squirt out of the neck of his top onto the sofa. Nice.

The other noticeable incident was on his first birthday. Lots of family at our house, big spread of food on the table. Loads of uncles and aunts making a fuss. I’m bouncing young MasterG on my knee, he tenses again – I expect poop and ready myself for it, lifting him off my knee, and point his backside away from me. In doing so, I pointed his face towards the table and he obliged by projectile vomiting all over dinner. The whole lot had to be chucked. 8O

We had this with our daughter. What I did was to select a couple of outfits and let her choose. That way, she’s being a “big girl” and making her own mind up.

    What’s your budget?

Are you looking for a home office style solution or something a bit more resilient?

The quantity of data you mention could get quite expensive, quite quickly. If its going through the books, that will lessen the pain somewhat.

TKID – I assume they’re all fine!!! It still goes like stink!

I’ve had it for almost three years now (it’s a lease car) and as soon as it tells me it needs a service, it goes in to the BMW dealer.

The only major work required since I’ve owned it were all 4 disks needed replacing – covered by the lease – but they’re pretty much a consumable anyway.

To be honest, if it wasn’t a lease car, I wouldn’t be changing it. My employers rules have changed meaning a new beemer is no longer an option. Shame; a really great car.

Lending to (or borrowing from) family is about as far as I’d take it, tbh

I know each situation is completely different, but I’ve lent money to a really good mate and to my Brother.

The mate paid me back within 2 months – £4k.

My Brother did a runner with the money, my HiFi, a games console and some furniture. He was in debt on a rented house and legged it leaving all my stuff behind. He’s been in touch since asking for more saying he’s getting himself sorted, but he’s not getting another penny out of me. My sister keeps bailing him out though – I dread to think how much.

Kryton – have a read of the reviews for the new Mazda 6 estate – honestjohn.co.uk think it’s better than most equivalent cars (including the Mundane)

Apart from the low memory issue, I still really like my Desire.

Me too. My contract came up for renewal in April last year and I haven’t found anything (handsets or deals) that excite me enough to want to change.

Bimbler, I’ve just done the same calculation.

My current HTC desire (2.5 years old) is costing me £21/month – £504 over 2 years (300 mins, far too many texts, 500Mb data)

A SIM only deal from Tesco (250 mins, gazillions of texts, 1Gb data) = £10/month – £240 over 2 years

    Nexus 4 handset – 8Gb version = £239.

Therefore – get the lot from Vodafone = £504* over 2 years vs DIY of £480 over 2 years (inc stumping £239 up front).

Can I be arsed? hmmmm…. it sounded good when I first thought about it, now I’m not so sure.

    * of course, this figure is only valid if I can get Vodafone to “upgrade” my phone to something decent for free. When I tried a few months ago, they weren’t interested as my tariff is pretty good.

Yeti would be nice if I could have the 4wd version (emissions too high) – otherwise not much point.

DS5 – hmmm.. hadn’t consideres Citroens. I like the DS3 as a funky little car, but not sure about the larger models.

Gulietta – yes, unfortunately too small.

We inherited on when we moved into our current house. It’s a good quality one – dwarf walls, hardwood frame and reflective glazing all round.

We set it up as a the kids playroom.

When we get enough cash saved up, we’re going to knock it down and build a proper extension. It’s too cold in winter and an oven in summer (south facing). Prior to owning one, I’d always quite fancied the idea. Not now though.

oldbloke – unfortunately, yes. We have to select the car through the companies chosen lease provider.

db – my Dad had an almost new Nissan Quiche and got rid of it after 8 months. Too many problems.

br – my must haves are 5-door hatchback / estate, diesel, comfortable, quick.
Unfortunately, I don’t have time to go and test drive them all. A decision has to be made by the end of the week.

The Avensis is okay, very reliable but a bit bland.

The Octavia is just a wee smidgen too small.
