No idea Hora, I’m from Glasgow.
Have a look at the club finder bit of the BJA website for the north west.
Theres quite a few clubs in there.

Judo is a tough old game. Prepare to hurt. Good fun though.

Theres a ton of really good Muay Thai camps around the north west of England, any quick google search for Muay Thai in the Manchester area will turn up loads.

I’m not saying this to brag, just to give background.
I teach Judo and have a background of 15 years of Karate and Muay Thai.
Judo is a sport, as is Muay Thai.
They are fun, will get you fit, make you mentally and physically tougher and have lots of techniques you can carry over into street brawling.
It’s not just about techniques though. Your mentality, the other guys mentality, weapons, numbers and sheer bloody luck all factor in just as much.
Take a martial art if you want, just don’t kid yourself on that it’s turning you into the ultimate street warrior.

In the 15 to 1 scenario the OP posted, theres no way I’d be hanging around trying to face any of that lot down. How did the event develop anyway? Did 15 guys just decide they were having you or had there been a bit of verbal going on?

You might be right about too much oil in the lowers.
When I serviced mine, I did that and couldn’t get full travel.

Do some martial arts. Breakfalls get ingrained into your “muscle memory” adn I find that still I tend to roll rather than splat when crashing. Not always But I am convinced it helps

    Another +1
I’m sure my habit of breakfalling off the bike has saved me from a few scrapes.

Local knowledge is key, or you’ll do what I did the first time I went up there myself – pootled around the main paths thinking, “this is crap”

I will say, it has chucked it down with rain for the last 40 days and 40 nights up here. Muddy doesn’t begin to cover it.

SRAM say its 48-54Nm for Truvativ cranksets, so still looking good for me.

Sounds just the job to stop me shearing another crank bolt though!

Is there a club we can join? I managed to wreck my crank bolt last night.
I was literally on the way out the door for a ride when I thought I’d check my cranks for play – I’d had the crankset off to replace a chainring last week.
I couldn’t get rid of the movement, no matter how much I tightened the bolt. Then I stripped the thread in the bugger.

Confusing. Opinions seem to have it that cheapo steel Deore rings are fine and put up with UK conditions better than more expensive alloy, while at the same time more expensive alloy rings are much better than the cheapo steel Deore rings.
    Which is true, I wonder.

Learnt a new move at bjj training tonight that could break someone’s leg.
Funnily enough, I learnt one of those at Judo tonight. Beware big, clumsy brown belts and their enthusiasm for unskilled counter throws.

I also learned that I really need a new middle chainring.

I had to bodge mine a bit.
I drilled a pair of holes about half way between the existing O ring holes on the guard.
This allows me to mount the crudguard on the down tube without the o rings fouling the cables where they run with no outer.

No. Got a 2.25 in my 2010 SLs that leaves very little room.

Might try that or the scotch tape bodge tonight myself

Theres an alternative climb just next to your Loch Humphrey fire road monster. Not as steep, but longer.
Remind me to show you it one day. From the comfort of my armchair.

What are you looking for a firm to do? Ie, above and beyond rolling out Truecrypt to everyone? Training / installation services?

Yep. There are plenty of applications that do this, that could be rolled out no problem by your IT dept.

I used Pointsec for this in an old job. Seemed alright.

I took up Shotokan Karate around 1995, practiced it for quite a few years and branched out into Muay Thai around 2001/2002.
I chucked all that stupid punchy kicky malarky around 2004, when I took up a proper martial art, Judo.

Now after several years doing that, my kicking flexibility is completely gone. Whenever I go back to MT for a visit, I can’t kick over leg height.

Don’t underestimate how much flexibility you will have lost!

3 weeks. It arrived last Wednesday.
For context, however, one of the guys I ride with ordered the exact same light 2 or 3 days later. The status of his order is still “waiting for supplier”

How easy is it to replace cables when they are interior routed?

I got one of these and the little nylion mount last year.

It’s been great. I get a decent runtime, even with it on high. It’s only 250 lumens, but it’s very focussed and throws the light far. It basically throws a wee spotlight on what you are looking at, which is what you want, really.
    Cheap and light also.

I just bought one of the mega cheap assault crown XML lights. It’s on the bar, and has replaced the old P7 torch I was using. It has quite a focussed hot spot too, and a fair old throw, so I’m thinking it might make a decent head light. I may relegate it to helmet use next winter.

Yes. Mine arrived last week. Mine fits fine. It still fits, just about, after I wrapped it in a layer of clingfilm and 2 layers of gaffa tape.

    Looks like they are 2010’s.
I stuck 10ml in each and lost a fair bit of travel.
I opened them up and put in 5ml in each and job done!

Glad I did it. There was hardly any oil in each leg and the foams were bone dry.
Not such a hard job, at all.

Read it loads. Was quite the tolkien fan years ago.
I’ve recently re read the Silmarillion, The Hobbit and LOTR back to back.

My 8 year old son is quite a reader, so I thought I’d let him have a go with my illustrated copy of The Hobbit.
He handed it back to me after half an hour with the immortal phrase, “this is nonsense.”

I can’t even bring myself to watch it. A bif soft git, I know.
I lost a 15 year old cat last month, which was bad enough, but I have his sister still on the go and a 10 year old German Shepherd who is starting to get on a bit.
Lots of upset to come in the next few years, I reckon.

Right. Was confused with Queen Elizabeth Forest Park for a bit there.
Just to join in the vibe, I’m not going to say where that is either.

First time at Jiu Jitsu tomorrow – will I die?

    You might.
Some big, clumsy noob might get you in a choke and not know to let go when you tap. Or you might forget to tap. Or you may get choked so quickly, you don’t get the chance to tap. Or you may get thrown onto your head and break your neck…etc..etc..etc

    You may need to MTFU.
Even better, MTFU and go try Judo, but having just checked out the Isle of Wight’s Judo club’s website, maybe don’t bother.

The Meetup have a run tonight up to Mugdock from Milngavie.
Could you make it there for 7 tonight? Short notice, I realise.

I was going through a bad spell of crashing on jumps, with a very similar sounding symptom to yours – being off balance in the air.
I read somewhere, might have been that nice Mr Jedi on here, that this is common when you pull up on the bars at takeoff. One side of your body will be dominant, hence stronger, and this side goes higher and throws you off balance.
I’ve thought about this and started from scratch again, working on the push with my legs and arms, rather than pulling up.
    So far, so good.
    Bet I crash tonight though…

More like 10. No need to cycle though. Theres a frequent and regular train service out towards Old Kilpatrick from Queen Street and Central stations.
Theres also has a service going up to Milngavie, which is perfect for trips to Mugdock.

I’m planning a trip up the Kilpatricks on Friday night, about 6.

You sure you have a mule?
I fit 2 tubes, multitool, first aid kit and a couple of litres of water in mine with room to spare for a waterproof/extra layer if needed.
Plus, mine is the NV model with the removable back insert thing that takes up space.

Theres loads in and around Mugdock, near Milngavie, but it sounds like the GMBC and Meetup folks have got you covered there.
Theres also plenty in the Kilpatrick Hills, just a little bit further west. They are my local stomping ground, so I could show you a few trails up there.

Did none of you ever do Judo as a kid? Practice some breakfalls.
In fact, that would look great in the trail centre car park, instead of showing off with wheelies and bunny hops, you could breakfall instead.
