I find just being myself works.

Not Jehovah Witnesses, but the local CofE.

10:00 Sunday morning, I had just got out of bed when there was a knock at the door.

Posh lady in twinset and pearls took one look at me and said “Oh, I am sorry” and started to walk away.

Realizing I was still looking (bemused) at her she explained that she was asking if anyone would like to attend the local church and hurried away.

I am long sighted and now need reading glasses, which makes using a phone to take pictures outside tricky as I cannot focus on the screen without glasses. I have an old DSLR with a optical view finder that is easy to use outside without glasses.

The battery in my G7 Plus would not hold much charge after 3 years, when I placed it on a level suface I noticed the battery was swollen.

As it is in a porch, I would mount the frame on the outside face of the wall.
Then the door could be as large, or larger than the opening and you could use the full width and height of the structural opning all the time, without tools (assuming the door opens outwards).
I did something similar by replacing the up and over door on my garage with a pair of externally mounted side hung doors.

Sudbury is about 45mins from Ipswich and just over an hour from J28-M25.

It has the old railway track that can be cycled, but is only 2.5miles. It has Nethergate Brewery and Tap and Melford Country Park (with parking) at the Rodbridge corner end and Friar’s Meadow Park at the other, with parking next to the Kingfisher Leisure Centre off Station Road.

There are quiet lanes to the west of the old railway, around Borley, Bulmer, The Hennys and Middleton, but there is a staggered crossing of the A131 at Bulmer Tye.

Male, sinlge, 55 years old, First AZ 19th March, no side effects other than a slightly sore arm.
Exactly one calendar month later, wake up, OK, go to work, OK.

Mid morning, start to feel cold. Late morning unable to feel warm regardless of jumper and coat, start to shake, no one else in office feels cold, drive home, do not remember journey.

No appetite, turn heating up and try to sleep under duvet fully clothed.

One day later, just starting to feel normal, Paracetamol seems to work.

Normal temperature, no headaches, no sore throat, no lack of taste etc.

I have been socially distancing, other than meeting two people in a large ventilated office.
I would not have mentioned the above, but symptoms match other people’s reactions, just very, very late.

I looked in to this a couple of years ago, to buy my BIL a good set for his 50th.

There is lot of different (but not contradictory) opinions and advice.

Different hardness, carbon, chromium and molybdenum content, angle of grind, balance, curve of edge, thickness of blade, stamped or forged, front bolster, rear bolster for balance, handle material, dishwasher compatible (I could only find Robert Welch Signature, Taylors Eye Witness Professional and Wusthof).

I gave up and bought him a case of wine.

But for his 52nd. I bought him an end of range Procook X100 20” cooks knife, because it was cheap (ish) and I knew he would be able to sharpen X100/HRC60 correctly.

I have forgotten a lot of what I learnt but remember this:-

    X30 = 0.3% carbon stainless steel

    X50 = 0.5% carbon stainless steel
(some wheeled/electric sharpeners do not work on harder blades)

    HRC = ‘H’ardness, ‘R’ockwell test ‘C’

Wusthof knives are very good and nearly all X50

Taylors Eye Witness Professional knives were originally designed (1979) by Robert Welch, had a Design Council award and known as Kitchen Devil Professional knives (not the current ones). I have some of both and really appreciate the handle design, now that I have arthritis in my hands.

Robert Welch Signature knives may not have been designed by him as he died in 2000.

Robert Welch Signature 11cm santoku is the only knife I have had to pull out of a chopping board.

‘Anysharp’ knife sharpener will sharpen any bit of metal, but grinds so much away, it leaves swarf. If using, use sparingly, only on cheap blunt knives, DO NOT RUB EYES, rinse under tap, wipe area around sharpener with wet kitchen roll. Useless ‘Anysharp’ copies are available.

I let any unrecognised number go to the answerphone, which has a recording of me saying “Hello? Hello? Hello? You are very faint, please speak up, Hello? Hello? Mum, are you holding the phone upside down? Hello? Hello? Oh, sorry I forgot, I cannot hear you because this is a recording. Please leave a message after the tone”.

It used to be better on my last phone as I could hear the callers, now I just get a recording of them hanging up. One cold caller did laugh and say “Well done”.

Don’t remember what other people gave me.

I bought myself a 1984 Land Rover Pickup and put a soft top on it.

    Paid of my mortgage.

Handed my notice in (worked for the company for over 20 years, last 3 years with my notice in my pocket, ready to hand in at a moments notice), very funny when they thought I was joking.

Gave myself a gap year and a bit, spent it getting up late, having a last sail with my Father, cycling between pubs in Suffolk and Essex.

I managed it because my only dependents ate cat food.

As swdan as said, access to and from the A14 to the Shotley Peninsular can be held up by the traffic queuing to get in to Ipswich, but this is mainly morning rush hour, before 09:00. Felixstowe Road will be similar.
The only accommodation around Shotley I know of is at the Red Lion, Chelmondiston and Shipwreck Loft at Shotley Marina. Presumably there are longer term Holiday Lets.
The Butt and Oyster at Pin Mill can get extremely busy, Pin Mill lane, leading to it, can be solid traffic so walk if you can
If you use the A12 to the east of Ipswich, it is handy to know that the outside lane can be used for going straight across all those roundabouts, not just for turning right.
If you carry on eastwards along the Felixstowe Road (and A14) you get to…
    —Felixstowe.
If seaside B&B is your thing there is a long promenade, pier, Languard Fort and adjacent museum, foot ferry across the Deben to Bawdsey and a foot/cycle ferry to Harwich (Penny Pier, RNLI, Harwich Redoubt, local museums and a crane) then on to Shotley Marina and back again.

This is a repeat from my previous post about Metacam.

When my 15yr cat started to have difficulties with her rear legs, the vet prescribed metacam, after a week and a bit she went off her food I dosed her from the syringe, rather than add it to her food as my other cat shared shared the food bowls. It would seem from other websites such as ‘metacam killed my dog/cat’ that stomach ulcers are a problem, possibly from not mixing with food. I stopped the metacam and it would appear that muscle weakness was the problem. She lived another six years. Our old Lab had joint problems (no metacam), but it was kidney failure at 13 that got him.

My advice as as a dog/cat owner, NOT a Vet, is to use the metacam and keep a VERY close eye on the appetite and weight.

Teleco’s inability or unwillingness to do anything about this is why my land line just has a recording of me saying “Hello? Hello? Could you speak up please? You are still very faint. Mother, if you can hear me, turn the phone the right way up. Oh, Sorry, I forgot, the reason I cannot hear you is beacuse this is an answer machine message, please a message after the tone.”

    fingerprint security
    Plain Android 8.1.0 after updating
    3000mah battery
fast charging with the right charger (phone only comes with lead)
    USB C at the bottom
    headphone socket at the top
dual sim or one sim plus sd card

    mediocre camera (even when new)
    2.4ghz wifi only
    cheap (get a spare?)

I replaced my up and over door with side hung Hormann doors, I mounted them on 2×2 treated SW on the outside (still covered by the roof overhang and guttering).

This meant I was able to remove the old timber garage frame as well and now the opening is as wide and tall as the masonry opening.

There are other threads on STW about the perils of removing up and over doors.

    A few more observations.

Ground clearance is more than the old Jimny (now 210, was 190) presumably measured under the diff and not the centre of the car as their diagram shows.

Tyres are thinner (195 not 205)

Back seats fold flat (or they have filled in the gap between the folded seats and the rear door).

They have gone back to using a stick for selecting ‘2H-4H-4L’, like a proper off-roader :-J

Roof gutter looks as though it could cause a serious head injury to a pedestrian or cyclist.

The video shows it going through some water, hopefully this means the axles a have proper breathers that do not suck the water in when cooling down.

    New specifications are out.

    http://www.globalsuzuki.com/automobile/lineup/jimny/

    Still part time 4WD.

Slightly better approach angle (37, was 34, still worse than departure).

Slighty worse ramp break over angle (28, was 31).

A lot more electrickery to go wrong (DSDB, HBA, WA, LDW, TSR, HHC, HDC, BLSDTC).

Only 1.5 litre petrol for Europe.

52 years old and (presumably) lucky to be in my only second full time permanent job, pension plan as follows:-

    1, annuity starting at 60
    2, annuity starting at 65
3, tracker pension fund, no longer paying in to, but accumulating
4, state pension starting at 67
5, current job paying in to ‘nest’ pension plus minimum employers contribution
6, parents well off and in late seventies
7, house, 49k in 1993, now fully paid for and worth 220k

1, & 2, Aviva, used to be a final salary scheme, but employer did not like rule change to compulsory indexed link, employer went bust, still have annuity, partly split to start at 65 due to being contracted out of SERPS, not enough to retire on

3, Aviva, employer contributed, started when 1 & 2 stopped, still contracted out of SERPS, no longer contributed to as left employment, but increasing about 12 percent per annum, still not enough to retire on

4, only getting full state pension if NI contributions continue for another five years (I intend to), due to previously contracted out of SERPS

5, only just started, but every little helps

6, Father on second ICD, Mother’s side of family lived in to 90’s, two younger siblings with whom I share enduring POA

7, House prices crashed in the early 90’s which is when I bought mine, I could still afford my pension contributions. Now may use for equity release.

Paper round did not pay NI, part time jobs as student did, I was told whilst unemployed to add to NI contributions if I wanted the previous years NI contributions to count towards pension (early 80’s). Ignored letter, but claimed dole.

In three years time I can take 25 percent tax free from 3 & 5, but they are investments and doing well, so will probably leave alone.

Gave myself a gap year (and a bit) when 40, no dependants, it made me realise that I need a structure in my life. I did not know or care what day of the week it was. The upshot of this is that I think I will need to work until I drop (even if it is at Homebase, taking about HSS drill bits to anyone who will listen). My Mother said she would have killed my Father when he retired at 60, but he had a shed to hide in.

Best of advice I could give is start ASAP, when I started contributing it was easy, I had given up hope of owing a home so had money to spare, see 7,
