Update – very apologetic email from CRC – offering me money back and postage paid or partial refund or vouchers – reply within 24 hours so can’t complain about that part of it certainly!

Just got a very cheap 7 speed cassette and spacer – Will give me time to service the freehub body on the campag wheel properly and see if it is def knackered or source some parts 🙂

cheers canny – yeah was looking at the jtec shift mate – hmm the 7mm cassette with 5mm spacer would seem a good / cheaper option though – many thanks!

3 types of headset: Std, semi-integrated(zero stack) and internal.

    STD – press fit cups
Semi-integrated – lower stack press fit cups
Internal (integrated) – bearings just sit inside frames

Most MTBs have the top 2 and yes if they are semi-integrated (if that is your setup) the bottom cup can be removed and a 1.5″ fitted for a taper 🙂

A tapered fork won’t work in a non-tapered head tube but vice-versa will

Not quite true – if you have an OS straight head tube you can run a 1 1/8 straight or a 1 1/8 to 1.5 taper

I have one for sale but we are talking internal not std or semi-integrated – lower cane creek 1.5 to 1 1/8th reducer – brand new!

However if it is press in Hope do a semi-integrated stepdown if that’s what your after?

As above you need an OS headtube?

Mud – Either dirt has got into the bearings or more likely is present in between the bearing and headset cup – just break down, clean and reassemble with a bit of grease (similar process to this):

    Cheers fat….

Yeah my sentiments – but 10-12mm seems spot on with above thoughts – I’ll measure tonight and take get a bolt with a happy medium 🙂

good point TJ – I could use a spare bolt and wind it in the PM and see how deep it is and then use that as a guide – Just need new bolts on a mixed setup – thanks TJ and PP.

I understand they are M6 – and the Avids would be 45 and 40 mm but these are std mounts not avid mounts?

with cash back £475 – bargin

However they are 120 XC forks with taper so completely irrelevant to you sorry 😳

Check drainage holes are free/not blocked.
    Tyre pressures…maybe.

TBH though, its a mountain bike, I figure it’ll cope with most things better than I will.

Cheers Matt – of course, just wanted to see if I had not come across or forgotten any useful tips to minimise wear and tear esp on long rides etc

WOW – what a response. Many thanks. Never mind…..

BTW – why does everyone think that the way they have their bike set-up is the same as everyone else?

This is the one reason I rarely post up a thread on this forum these days!

I like the stainless bearings even if mud still gets in. I think that most people should service their headsets regularly and they last sooo much longer 🙂

MOST walkers don’t know of don’t care – I think if you are as polite as possible one would be unlikely to have any major encounters 🙂 Hypothetically speaking!

Nearly £200 in the last year all paid up – often not the cashback site fault if the retailer doesn’t pay their bills!

I can confirm that my last Merlin order cashback cleared fine 🙂

I would be interested to hear about longevity of the evo hubs as the Pro II’s for me are very good but I think they don’t like copious mud and jet washing?
