I would say that my last XT cassette looked fine but wafter putting anew chain on it (do it every 6 months or so) it jumped like hell. Seems the newer cassettes seem less worn visually before they start to jump! The old ones I have changed in the past have looked a lot more worn before I have changed them?

Normally I am fine – I hydrate OK but def need energy drink when I go out with them – I am not particularly unfit mind you! Cant pace and I am always in catch up mode!

why not take 1 spoke out and measure it then put it back at the right tension – fairly straight forward – or could you use the wheelpro online spoke calculator?

I think you can use the FSA 36 degree headset bearings for all FSA cartidge headsets? Anyone know any different – get them at UK Bikestore http://www.ukbikestore.co.uk/product/140/160_6475/fsa-headset-bearings-872-oversized-acb.html?

I live in Bovey Tracey and ride Dartmoor most of the time – loads of nice footpaths but not legally ridable so obviously I only walk on those. Killer loop is good esp on a nice sunny day and dry under tyre but have a look on the threads under dartmoor rides there have been quite a few recently – Exmoor is also nice – fairly sandy tracks and a nice mix of forest and moorland – and quantocks got loads or tracks in a rel small area to exploer ;)

The 5.1 supposed to have a better heat tollerance. You can readily mix 4 and 5.1 – I put 5.1 in as I can get loads of it cheap in Halfrauds. There is a difference in density when you mix the two together like a salt solition and water etc but I dont think you can get an idea of what it is from the appearance.

    In order of my preference:

Hope XC3 wheelset (around £340 with free rotors)
Hope hoops on DT 4.2 (around £250 + £50 for rotors)
Handbuilt pro2 on DT or mavic (a bit more than the above, but better?)

Built my own wheel with ProII hubs with dtswiss rev spokes and dt 5.1D rims – are very very pleased with them – had Handbuilt pro2 on DT or mavic (a bit more than the above, but better?) before but rims bit flimsy for fast tech descending ;)

I buy fairly cheep gloves as I have had more expensive ones and they don’t last any longer – Mace Comp or simialr are very comfy and had them for a year now without any probs!

I built mine about 4 weeks ago – Hope Pro II, DT Swiss Rev’s in black and DT Swiss 5.1D Rims – the first (rear) looked OK but after a day at Cwm carn was buckled laterally, trued it then went out again, and agin – the front (second wheel) was fine – I then read around and decided to do a rebuild – and hey presto a weekend at Afan was still true. I built mind to a tolerance of about .2-.3 mm. Cant you actually measure a tolerance of less then 0.2mm realistically and if so does it make a difference to the longevity of the wheel i.e. can get it true lat and radially but doesn’t tell you about the overall build quality does it?

well I guess not stupidly steep – some of the clips look a little steep to be when you look at the position of the trees? but not not 1/3 or 1/4 type things – just means that you can go pretty fast without the owrry of doing big air/drops!

Isn’t Octalink Shimano? I use Hope BB cups – and of course HTII cranks – wont go back to Shim Cups! And yes I know this is an internal BB post ;) Have you thought of alternatives to HTII EXT BB Cups?

Surely the idea of the polyST liner is to deform like the front of a car – deformation takes energy in the form of the kinetic energy from the riders head when moving – the polyST deforms or cracks and thus dissipates the energy and also over a wider area esp if one hits their head over a small area i.e. a rock. The hard shell protects the softer polyST inside and helps dissipate the energy. Is this too simple?

Me – not afraid of the uphills just staying in one piece down the DH’s. The stuff on you tube looks OK though fast, twisty and steep but not too many rock gardens ;) Think that person we me ;) LOL

I agree, but tend to ride out of my comfort zone on most rides even if its for a short while. Perhaps I am just crap but even my mate who rides with me is thinking of getting some when we do the Kielder Avalanche. I just seem to land on my knees whenever I come off. I never really damagae any other part of my body as I usually roll out but seem to kneel down first :0 DOH.

Hmm – yeh the d30 pads seems a little variable on the personal review – and they are pretty expensive – think maybe the KS’s are the way to go!

    foxyrider

Yup they are the ones – I think they might fir the bill over Kyle Straits as they are more flexible – don’t really need them for puncture resistance more for bruse/flesh protection. Cheers Guys ;) On next months credit card it is then ;)

I just didn’t want to say that I fell off doing easy stuff – got to think of my image ;) LOL (Technical XC) rather than DH or Freeriding etc – I need something that would be very comfy on lon XC rides? Those 661’s look kinda nice and comfy!

No Ballsofcottonwool – I mean I serviced the air sleeve – All I mean’t that servicing the air sleeve and seal is a cheap way of finding out if its just the seals if not maybe its new shock time?

    has leaked some oil

The oil surely comming from the air chamber?

    foxyrider

“YOUR FOX Racing Shox IS PRESSURIZED WITH NITROGEN. THE CHARGED PORTION OF THE SHOCK SHOULD NEVER BE OPENED EXCEPT BY AN AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTER. IF YOU HAVE AN AIR SHOCK, THE PORTION OF THE SHOCK THAT IS CHARGED WITH NITROGEN DOES NOT NEED TO BE OPENED IN ORDER TO PERFORM CLEANING AND LUBRICATION OF THE AIR CHAMBER.”

Well I did mine without any problems – At least maybe try changing the seals and oil etc for the sake of £15?

Its a motor scooter look its got an engine in the back – so def illegal as he’s a motorcyclist without a helmet – report him quick ;)

    foxyrider
    Free Member

We are not talking about helmet or death are we here – its about helping to prevent injury – being hit by a car at 60mph will be fatal – helmet or not – being knocked of at 15-20mph by a car, pedestrian or just bad luck will result surely in less severe injuries on the whole – and thus it would be advisable to wear a helmet. also I don’t think there is good statistically sound research out there about cycle injuries (especially those not reported) and the wearing of helmets period! Just like wether to wear seat belts – before it was compsulary no one really used them so not much data to study? I am on the fence with helmets but if they were made a legal requirement I would not have a problem wearing mine all the time as I do anyway!

    I got T-boned by someone driving a Land Rover. I wasn’t wearing a helmet, I didn’t hit my head.

Hmm well I guess you were lucky not to hit you head then – Period!

I am simply not going to fall off at the kind of speeds that I ride with my kids at

. Convinced of that are you? What about the car that didn’t see you or the pedestrian walking out in front of you? I think buffalobill was taking about the families that cycles along the roads – I am sure many older children can ride quite fast and also be involved in accidents.

Granted I had a trip to casualty out of it, but that was about it

Was that for concussion or a stitch-up – both of which would probably be prevented with a helmet if it was in a position where the helmet covered your skull? Yeh its not going to prevent all injuries but probably goes a long way?
