(There seems to be a disproportionate amount spent in the Dumfries and Galloway area to me – spend some of that cash up in the Glasgow/Edinburgh/Perth area instead?)

The reason is D/G needs investment because of its poor economy and the stanes were introduced directly as a consequence of the impact of foot and mouth on tourism. As a galloway boy I think we deserve investment you compare the ecomomy of Perthshire and that of Wigtonshire and the oppertunities for employment in the central belt with those in rural Galloway no Common Wealth games money comming our way

Dalbeattie has had work done over the last few years which always seems to concide with the local "Hardrock Challange " Last year Smithland hill a rocky stepping stone section which had matured into a gnarly section suddenly had tons of earth dumped on it smoothing out the rocks but leaving a very ugly scar.
This year a section below the slab has been sanitised and no longer poses any kind of challange to an experienced rider .
I have been led to belive this work was done to keep Dalbeattie red route designated as a red route otherwise it was going to be classed as black.
Surely some better course of action could be found rather than just removing the "hard bits"

We never got any stuff like that only got toy cars but later on we found out you could melt down dinky cars and cast the metal into arrow heads and fire them at the council house kids when we had stone fights on the dissused railway now that was a real 70s childhood

My brother had a springer and a good friend took him for a walk (the dog), the guy was recovering from a serious leg injury , when man and dog reached the local park their were kids feeding the swans ,dog chases swans swans swim off dog leaps into water and follows .mucho red face man with sore leg "war veteran" limps away
    also they are cat killers

I have finished pine for years wax will mark , oil will go yellow orange , poly varnish is horrid , the way I would suggest is to use spirit stain to get colour you want then apply clear mat water based varnish no smell not shiny but wipe down

There is some interesting riding to be had at glen trool but not on the 7 stanes track if you park at the car park at visitor center and are prepared to ride foot paths you can create a great ride around the loch using trails the southern upland way all sorts of stuff the os map shows all the foot path so just make it up as you go along it is mostly all very ridable just one or two tricky slippy wooden step sections so watch out in the wet.

I ve been self employed furniture maker and restoter for nearly 20 years do rough estimates quick and free then tie the customer in to you be charming and win the work , their will always be cheaper people but they will not last , do not , cut corners or you will lose out and always tell the customer it straight eg yes i am expensive but i am good and i will do what you want .

    good advice?

i am still busy but poor

Have to be very minor roads in the lakes cos it is full of scary people on hols who cannot drive on singletrack roads total lack of anticipation. With kids on trailer I would be very keen to avoid the tarmac.

    Smoke a pipe
Whilst wearing a midge net or only go outside during windy sunny days all evenings must be spent inside or close to a source of smoke eg a Glaswegian or a fire

i dont think its too hard however the fc have been saying that people find the route avoiding the slab eg red route is “dangerous”
all I am saying is ride dalbeattie its under rated by some or so it appears
and there already have been “IMPROVEMENTS” MAKING IT “safer”

    fotheringtonthomas

“But the black route follows pretty much all of the red route anyway… “
this is if you start at center I like do the black as a ride alone sometimes twice starting at ” heart breakhill”

    fotheringtonthomas

do not miss dalbeattie some do not like it but thats because its hard there is talk of making parts of it easier because of complaints so ridee it now

the black kirr I think that the finest section is the “black craig” bit the rest is ok so if your mates do not want to do it all you can instead of climbing the” stairway to heaven” keep on up track to join the tarmac head to” heart break hill” do best bit ,save you pointless climb and miss out “mcmoab “which some including me think of as a good way to break your bike

kirr red at night is mighty, there is too much forestry road if you do the

black alone but mixed red and black its fine.

it flows so fast yum yum

if you ever make it up galloway there are 4 butchers in castle douglas and an award winning organic buthcher in dalbeattie the best bacon comes from “littles” in castle douglas who are a specific pork butcher home cured bacon next to no water although most do great “ayrshire” bacon
