I use my bank but I don’t think they are the cheapest it’s just suit’s me think it’s like a tenner a trade, I’d go with Stumpy01’s suggestion not heard bad things about iii, I had TD Waterhouse account but found them hardwork and they wanted to charge for non-activity not sure if they still do.

Hairychested google for an online broker and set an account up and then choose a stock, if it’s long term then now’s as good a time as any, especially a cash is earning next to nowt in the bank right now.

As also mentioned is funds or a tracker but some have a minimum lump sum investment so watch for that.

Good luck it can be fun and it can be dissapointing :-)

I considerd RBS or LLoyds this morning but decided against it, it’s tempting to lay a couple of quid on them and see what happens.

But I would say and it’s said here already don’t invest what you cannot afford to lose!!

I’d go for the 140mm models, I had a 160mm and I didn’t think it was the ultimate Alps machine.

Having been kicked by a horse whilst stationary I now either ask if it’s ok to pass if need to over take, if they are coming towards me I will stop and but the bike between me and the horse and wait for it to pass just to be 100% sure.

I love comments like this "Steel is for people who can’t afford titanium. Aluminium is for beer cans."

I thought I needed a TI frame so got one and probably rode it no more than a handful of times, it just didn’t seem as much all round fun as a steel framed bike. The TI was awesome at speed of that there was no doubt, but if you are not on it then it felt a bit lifeless kind of numb which meant if you were having a lazy riding day just cruising around the trails it just wasn’t fun, where as a steel bike feels great slow, fast and in between.

I love the way a good steel bike rides and therefore that’s what I know use other than my FS bike, don’t think I’ll be itching the TI itch again :)

It would be wise to have a good long test of TI before committing.

If you look around the classifieds they often sell the rings for good money I have two complete sets in my spares stock one was £60 and one was £80, thats for all three rings!!

There was another set yesterday for £80 I think yesterday, but I don’t need anymore really as they seem to last an age

What time was that? It was fine between 8:30 – 11.00am, thouggh busy when heading back on the main drag to the car park.

There were a few groups around early on some taking photos on what I call the Alpine Section, saw them later they had lost 4 of the group!!

A 1lb of fat is the same as a 1lb or muscle just the 1lb of muscle will fit in a smaller space than the fat as it’s denser, so you will feel slimer and clothes will fit better hence waist size is a good indicator, though your actually weight won’t change but it does depend on training and eating regimes.

    Thanks Mike,

Just got back from it’s first ride a little tighten of the headset and seatclamp was all that was needed so pleased with that, rode as well as it looks, made up with my XC Albert.

I’ve done well and since the first week before Xmas have lost over 5lbs, waivered a little this evening and had a curry but choose a shaslick and boiled rice over a dish with sauce as well as passing on the popadoms!!

But I still have a way to go for my target!!

marsdenman – when do you think you’ll be able to send an official update out?

I used DMR V12’s last year in Morzine/Les Gets. The previous year I’d used SPD’s felt better with flats. Will be on V12’s this year too

    When you over there?

I did it on a 100mm lightweight XC bike, but seeing as we went a very odd route up which involved rock climbing I was glad it was light. Coming down it was a handful but only went over the bars once. Next time I’d take a longer travel HT or a FS as it would make the decent more fun.

Some of it’s rocky some it isn’t bit of a mixture on the way down, that’s the path that goes down to Lanberris.

Looks like the basis of a 1hr cwncarn STW Group challenge :) Not that I’ve every done it in an hour but I’d have a punt at that. Maybe something to arrange in March? Could have a fast lap, rest/lunch/snack social lap?

I run an Alfine these are my thoughts so far

PROS – runs through all weather with consistent gear changes, easy to set up, stealthy (runs very quiet), awesome on days rides, cruising around on bridleways, forest trails and the odd singletrack. The bolted rear makes the back stiff.

CONS – heavy rear wheel is noticeable, changing gear underload isn’t great which in turn lends it not to be that great for undulating singletrack where quick gear changes are needed.

I like it but on the right type of ride which is all day riding as mentioned above, very muddy or nasty weather conditions.

    Nice pic’s

ianc got one of these Thule G5 908 2+1

    forge197
    Free Member

I have used both on the same the car. Used to have a Thule roof rack it’s ok carrying two bikes very hard to get a third on. The towbar on the otherhand is very easy to load very quick to install I have a Thule Tow bar rack with a single lever to install takes secones. If you are leaving the bars on all the time then it will be a little less faff.

I found that in the current conditions the salt get’s on the bike weather on the roof or attached to the back so there is no difference there.

My car is a diesel passat and putting bikes on the roof would knock 20mpg compared to not having them on, and on the back about 10 – 13mpg less than I’d get without. Bars on their own around 5mpg and the extra noise!!

For me I can’t see ever moving from the tow bar solution it just works and Mrs F can load her bike on it which would never have happened with a roof rack :) I think the only better solution is VW Transporter :)

The more I ride the Alpine the better it gets, it’s a great bike, climbs well and descends very well, confidence inspiring to ride.

spot on mrmichaelwright “all you can do is select the first 5 playlists and go forward and backwards through the tracks

i cannot select an album or song using the ipod controls ” that is all you can do.

    forge197

You should be able to select the first 5 playlists on the ipod from the car stereo and use the normal forward and back to change tracks as the CD. The VW IPOD interface is quite poor IMHO, I have one it’s not great.
