I think the OP must have lost the will to live after all this, he only wants to take his dog for a walk!

Last time I drove there, we went via Calais, Reims, Nancy, crossed into Germany just north of Strasbourg, Stuttgart, Munich, Stayed the night in Garmisch Partenkirchen then into Austria Innsbruck over the Brenner Pass from there its all down hill to Lake Garda. Fantastic area to sail and cycle, eat and drink.

Tunnel is free if you use Tesco club card vouchers as I go over at least 3/4 times a year it is a considerable saving!

As for eating, try the Refuge half way up the High St in Bourg.

I am doing the Etape later this year which is a very similar course to the Marmotte. After reading the posts above I may have to send the new cassette back 12-27 with a 50-34 up front?

For got to mention that Tom from tomtom will take you via the Mont Blanc tunnel to Coumayeur over the Petit St Bernard pass down to Bourg St Maurice, this is only viable from mid-June to mid October. Loverly route though! and another €35.00 toll for the Mont Blanc tunnel.

The sheer joy of driving on the French motorway system compared to the UK’s motorways makes the tolls seem worthwhile and once you get a “telepeage tag” makes life even easier! The route to Bourg St Maurice is,

Calais, Reims, Troyes, Dijon, I then go via Bourg en Bresse to Lyon airport, Chambery, Albertville. I do this route 3-4 time a year and usually reckon on 9 hours with a couple of stops.

Surely thats got to be a very expensive way of making a bowl of porridge?

Just out of interest, has anyone worked out the difference in cost between slow cooking some thing for 8 hrs in the slow cook, as opposed to 1hr etc in the oven?

You could do all the above recipes in a pressure cooker in a fraction of the time and cost, but they would not taste as good!

Use the tunnel with Tesco club card points, for every £10 of club card points you get £30 of ferry vouchers. By the time you fill your car up once a week with the weekly shop it does not take long to get a free or very cheap crossing.

I had winter tyres fitted about 6 weeks ago and can confirm that after driving in todays snow I shall be fitting winter tyres to all future cars. I was driving down snow covered lanes this morning no skidding or sliding grip both uphill and down hill.

The peripherique is easy if you avoid peak times, my children always ask Daddy to drive around the Arc d’Triomphe, just to see Daddy stressed :D, also the Millau Bridge is a modern wonder of the world, well worth stopping at the visitor centre and if possible drive underneath it.

4 British sailors in the top 10 at the worlds in San Francisco at the moment but Ben Anslie will still get the nod for the 2012 Olympics! There is a good Masters circuit so I'm told.

Have you ever tried the pits behind the Royal Oak, they are used on a regular basis for motor-cycle trials, also the woods at the back have routes through to the entrance to the Warren Golf Club, there used to be some single track that ran alongside the golf course through to Twitty Fee.

I used to live down Fir Tree Lane and there are some great trails there through to the Heather Hills also across the road from Fir Tree Lane through the woods to Blakes and along Great Graces Walk, towards Chelmsford, "some say" that this is haunted! so don't go alone.
