Marin Mount Vision 5.8 WFG 15" (more like a 13.5 – 14"). We've had two 5' girlies out on it and they both love it. 120mm travel. Or what about this beast in a 15"?! I need to get this in the shop!

Ride a Whyte first. My fave hardtail and one that trounces everything else in the shop.

We're a Whyte dealer and sold a steel one today. The guy had a go on our Whyte 19 Alu Trail for a day on proper offroad stuff then he had a go near the shop on the 905 (his favourite and our best seller). He then took the steel out and came back saying that it just feels right. Really happy chap and believe me, he has been contemplating the 905, steel and Whyte 19 Alu for weeks. From my knowledge, I think he made the right choice.

I'm doing a lot of what's suggested – open most of the time apart from Easter Sunday, asking what customers want, competing with Internet, running niche brands with lots of demo bikes. How clever am I? ??Oh, hang on. My demo bikes come back damaged so it costs a bomb to run them and the profit on bikes is minimal in most cases anyhow. Competing with Internet means I'm selling stuff for less than I bought it, people get to try stuff out so they can buy it on Internet anyhow, I get bikes etc in for folk, they ride them, make them second hand, want them then go AWOL and I open Sundays, when I make £20 turnover. I then close on a Wednesday with my new found wealth. The industry needs a shake-up big time and one small retailer cannot do it on its own. ?I'm poorer than I've ever been but I love it and I work with great folk and get to talk bikes and trails with great, loyal customers regularly. If I could pay a few of my bills from doing it, it would be even better!

Great, I'm going to stock them along with my new status as Trek concept store. I'm selling off all my "niche" products – Whyte, Mondraker, Pronghorn, Marin are all going, along with my Argon 18, Look and Eddy Merckx road bikes. I've gone all mainstream! 🙁

dilute muc-off – it's not the nicest. I now use Pedro's Green Fizz. Better, better for environment and we've got tons!

Mondraker do a Ladies bike at £500. Light for the money and really nice looking.

I thought they looked pretty sweet so I wanted to order some in. When I enquired, I was told they weren't up to standard so they aren't stocking them this year. MMA Sports seem pretty damn good to be fair so they must know their stuff. Shame though, looks good.

We have DT Swiss EX1750s with Nobby Nic 2.25s on our Pronghorn 150s. Light but really strong.

Formula are amazing. Can't get enough. Not the most reliable from personal experience but all others seem to have been fine. We have Shimano on our demo bikes and we just can't seem to get on with them (but can't afford to change them all!).

Don't understand the negative comments about Stirling. I'm not from here originally but since I came here for uni, I chose to settle here. Now I'm in Menstrie, just a few miles out, literally two minutes away from the hills and my shop is in Alva.

To me, it doesn't get any better, and as mentioned, I'm not from here, not inbred as far as I am aware and had international choices of where I could have settled.

Lezyne. Really well made and sell all day because of this, their value for money and even the distributor's nice, which makes a change.

Fuzzy, go see them. Hubs are amazing (remember you pay a lot for King hubs) and they're incredibly light and, naturally, beautiful.

I need to ride them myself when I have time/money but from what I know from customers, they're fantastic and very stiff.

Sales chat?! I don't make any money anyway so all these attempts at sales are for the banter, nothing else. Plus you wanted them! I can only tell you what I have been told as I haven't ridden mine yet. Reserving judgement until then…! DT Swiss 1750s have been nice so far on our Pronghorns.

Whyte 19 Steel – yummiest bike we've had for a while. Dropous are very much replaceable and you can change them for singlespeed efforts.

Love it. The one we have is not my size however Clever me.

140mm 2010s? I haven't seen them but will now have a look. We have 2009 Revelations with Maxle (U-Turn) for much cheapness but not 2010s. Margins are dismal on them but at least they have their serial numbers intact and are legit!

Whyte? Love them and my friend has had a Cube Ltd Race so I have knowledge of both.

Nobby Nic 2.1s. Amazing. Fast but grip. No mud tyre but good enough and predictable. This question will never have one answer though – everyone has their own opinion, which is why my bike is also different from yours!

I wear Smartwool Microweight most of the time. I have a long sleeve lightweight (with zip, which is really useful) that I've worn under a Gore Alp X top at -2C or so and it's been fine too. They're simplifying things for Winter 10/11 but the Sport NTS is what many people go for.

Smartwool. Magical stuff. Not wearing any today and it feels weird. Wear it virtually all the time now, regardless of temperatures and what I'm doing.

We swear by the Clarks brake pads – use them all the time and justifiably the the OEM stuff isn't selling. We've only got the sintered in though.

We tried on Friday and it was pure ice. Gave up.

Smartwool is fantastic – we have always had good feedback about it and I've tested it alongside Icebreaker and Craft baselayers. Smartwool was preferred for colder weather (they do a lightweight and midweight) and the Craft, while synthetic, was also deeply impressive. Icebreaker was good but didn't have it for me, plus they're generally more expensive.

It's been mentioned a couple of times – Stirling area (Dumyat, Ben Cleuch etc.) is phenomenal, drop into Laggan on the way up to Aviemore if you need to do the trail centre thing (black's a bit harder than most and reds are fun) and then spend some time in Aviemore – Sluggan singletrack, Ryvoan Pass and Lairig Ghru or all great and easy to navigate.

    Lyons,

Our shop is in Central Scotland but we have a van so are hoping to do more demo events certainly in Scotland but perhaps further afield.

With regard to discounts, I have given discounts on every bike so far – I was/am a consumer too so I am happy to give a percentage back or some money off. At the moment it's not a money-making enterprise but the ride needs to be experienced and the brand needs more presence. In my mind, to achieve that, a fat bloke (me) bouncing past you (I hope) on a Pronghorn is one of the best ways to do so.

We have 3 demo 150mm Trail bikes and 2 demo 100mm Race bikes. Massive investment for no return but we like a challenge and while it's a niche product (and the Captain points out it's ugly), it really works for me. I tried tons of bikes at Eurobike and these stood out above all.
