It’s entirely possible, but if the sim wasn’t fully immersive and convincing (or didn’t have rules and overrides built in to prevent us noticing that it isn’t) then we’d have noticed, and if it is or has those things then we will never know.

Yes, if you tried to mimic other ‘laws’. If those ‘laws’ are unique to this ‘science experiment’, then there is no convincing to be done.

However, it appears there are glitches

PS I’m a total layman in regards to physics, so if any physics guys could tell us something interesting – ie educate us cretins, that’d be great.

Funny you should say that. Everything you need is right here

I find this topic fascinating. Mostly because it has now moved from the realms of quackery to possibility.

Science has gone full circle from debunking religion (and various Gods) to now laying down theories that the creation of the universe is so improbable that a ‘creator’ of some sorts must have been responsible for the Big Bang.

As such imagine the universe as a big science project, an ant farm if you will, but the logic of the world is run as computer code.

Some scientists and cosmologists suggest that this computer is all around us. Nature itself. Others suggest that this is some external ‘server farm’ type of simulation. The crux of it is that it is a simulated reality.

Of course, this is still mostly theory, but there is some real scientific thinking behind this. Before you say ‘you sound mental flipiddy’. Take some acid and watch these…

    Existentialism lite

    Nerdy science fair ramblings

In fact maybe give the acid a miss and just watch the vids. Quite enlightening.

Could any of you good fellows give a quick summary of what’s been going on so far? Kind of feel a bit out of touch dipping in and out of this….

I get the gist that Mike Hall is doing rather well and Guy Martin probably isn’t riding. But then again he might be. But probably not. If he is, he’s used a really dull pseudonym.

    Anything else worth knowing?

Already done, no deficiencies at all, all good. In a way, we were gutted, if it was a deficiency we can deal with it, healing a broken mind is much tougher.

Really glad to hear that you’ve already looked into it.

I’m positive you’ll both get to where you want to be and look back going “that was all a bit sh1t wasn’t it?”

    Promise 🙂

Seriously consider having a full gamut of tests for nutritional deficiencies. Even if you think general diet is good, these things do have a considerable impact.

Not a doctor – just anecdotal experience and advice speaking…

This time of year is hardest and affects a lot of people. When the days get longer and the pills kick in she’ll be in a much better place.

Hold on to that thought and until that time just be there for her, like you are. Try not to stress or fuss, although easier said than done – it does create a vicious circle. You will get back to that life you had, it’s a blip.

Have you got to the bottom of what triggered all of this?

No such thing as overdressed, only underdressed. I say wear a suit – possibly without a tie. Puts you in the right frame of mind

    This. But…

Smart jeans, shirt (or plain dark t-shirt if you want that ‘media’ appearance *wink) and a blazer with good shoes (Chukkas, etc) if you have the wardrobe. Well cut, well thought out smart casual is way better than a badly fitting suit in my experience.

Anyone can put on a suit. Not anyone can put together a good smart casual look. Difference.

I had undiagnosed Lyme for about 4 years. It was shit. Really really shit.

In the end I went private. 1 year of antibiotics sorted it. Then I developed gut dysbiosis as a result of the crazy amounts of ABX. That was shit too (pun intended). Back to ‘normal’ now, it has been a long journey though and there are no cast-iron guarantees of full recovery.

Anyway, get it treated properly and get it treated fast. The longer it’s left (even partially treated), the harder it is to get rid of.

ILADS treatment guidelines suggest 1 month of antibiotics for early Lyme. Perhaps show this very document to your GP if there are any questions…

    Yes it’s a myth that it’s a myth.

It works as it contains Citronella. Purely anecdotal, but I used it on a holiday to Sri Lanka (renowned for tenacious mosquitos) and came away with the grand total of….zero bites.

It’s not *the* best and it only really works on Midgies and Mozzies. But it does smell okay and I’d happily use it all day every day. Which is more than can be said for DEET.

Brilliant – thanks for all insight! Looking at topography, I think Vietnam might be a better bet than Cambodia, in particular this little adventure, so I’ve dropped Backyard Travel a line to see what they have to offer in the dates I’m looking at.

    Cheers.

The people were wiser to tourists, and you could see the dollar signs light up in their eyes when they seen you.

Same in Sri Lanka, the touts are merciless and unrelenting. Main downer on the trip in what was otherwise an amazing country.

Some brilliant insights there! I’m still on two minds about the whole cycle tour option, the roads don’t sound like much fun (at least the busier ones) but I think there are backroad tours that would be more my scene. I’m not looking for anything too serious either…50k a day would be fine I think, especially in the humidity.

To me it’s way more interesting than sitting on a beach for a couple of weeks (but hey I’ll be doing my share of that regardless). Plus the more I hear about Angkor Wat, the more it fascinates me.

Thoughts on Laos/Vietnam also more than welcome. Thank you all.

I used the word ‘holistic’ in a meeting today and no, it wasn’t about medical treatment. However, at the time I felt ever so clever…

I will now kill myself with immediate effect 😥

Edit – Not before first owning myself with a pair of bombers and weeing in my own shoes…

Best to leave wanting more I think!

I met a guy who was riding around for a month following a triple heart bypass. Or was it quadruple? Anyway, he was having the time of his life, but taking it understandably steady, 30 miles a day or so I think.

Also… two kitchen sink items I wouldn’t have been without…

A small portable radio to listen to Radio 4 in the the tent. Very comforting when the wind and rain is lashing… and a lightweight kite to fly on the beach in the evenings. Some beautiful moments doing that 🙂

You can see it in the last pic above sticking out of the back…

Your painting ineptitude and lack of insulation is one thing, but your neighbours expecting someone else to pick up the tab for damage to their property caused by your building work is royally taking the p***.

I don’t see any scenario in which the cost would be split 50/50, unless the crack could have been patched successfully and the OP insisted on a full skim.

Who cares if they’re skint? Their lack of contingency isn’t your problem.

This, ladies and gentleman, is how you end up falling out and physically avoiding your neighbours. What’s it going to be like in the summer when you’re enjoying your garden next to them? You’ll be worrying about it unless you’re a total narcissist.

Whilst I don’t agree with being walked over in the slightest, the OP stated that he now has a better ceiling as a result.

Is it *REALLY* worth falling out over £150? Christ…

Secondly have you ever painted fresh plaster on a ceiling? If you have you will know that you need to heavily water down the paint and it becomes particularly messy.

I find fresh plaster beautiful to paint on, but it depends on the paint I guess. I don’t usually mix, but I use naturally thinner paints for this. A bit late to be helpful, I know…Sorry 🙂

The noise has been incessant for months now, power tools from 8 till 5 everyday (I work from home) and being a real pain in the arse.

At least they are cracking on with it

As a result my walls got spattered with paint leaving me with no option but to paint the whole room.

Not sure how you managed to do this?

On top of this my neighbour popped over to tell me that the cost to re do my ceiling is £300.
    I am absolutely fuming.

This is cheeky, I would suggest, pleasantly, that you are happy to go 50/50 and explain why. If I were in the neighbour’s shoes I would take that. You have a nicer ceiling now after all.

I can understand that the noise will be doing your head in if you’re working from home. Headphones?

On the bright side, if they come to sell before you, it might help to push the value of your own property up. Don’t fall out, be calm and stand your ground but overall pleasant. Otherwise the stress isn’t worth it. Experience speaking.

Second that Cicerone book above. I found it invaluable. You can link up routes on the fly, which you will invariably end up doing due conditions/energy levels, etc.

I went in May the first time and it was mostly wet. The second time was in August was mostly dry, apart from one day. Midges weren’t too much of an issue on either trip, but I had plenty of Skin So Soft.

I really enjoyed Mull, but I didn’t have a huge time to explore. Glad I didn’t miss it out though 🙂

5 years of misery. Got better (a la Monty Python).

Not without a lot of money spent on private treatment. Don’t rely on the NHS to bail you out properly if you get ill.

Cheers for the kit breakdown johnnystorm. Much appreciated!!!

I’ve been a bit old school with my approach to touring up until now and been quite happy with panniers. But having seen what’s available on the Alpkit website for very reasonable amounts of dosh, I’m being swayed towards the seat/frame pack approach…

Which of course opens up a whole new avenue of frame options such as Singular and Cotic. So a comfy 29er is what I’m after now. Balls… that has just opened up even more potential research.

Suggestions still very much welcome 😉
