Thanks, guys.  I was in two minds whether or not to share it.

Haha, sorry if you find that rear view shot disturbing.  I just thought it was a novel angle, although the camera was right in my eye line which made it quite difficult to see the trail.

Thanks for all of the links to videos and advice.  The WG2 does seem to be the best value that I keep looking back at.

Nwmlarge, I’d be interested to hear how you get on with it, when it arrives, if you get chance.

    Cheers guys.

How does Cadair Idris hold up in the wet? I’m down there this weekend but the weather looks pretty miserable and I had been considering doing Cadair Idris.

Edit: How long should be allowed to complete it?

The alarm rung out at 3am and after a quick breakfast we were off. Back to the hostel by 6:45am in time for their full English breakfast and then back to bed for an hour before check out and a loop of Ullswater.

The people we were speaking to whilst drinking the night before didn’t believe us at breakfast that we’d already been up and down!

The forecast had looked terrible just a couple of days before so we certainly struck lucky.

Myself and some friends had three rides in the Lakes this weekend. Skiddaw and Ullock Pike on Saturday was first up and fantastic. Then we were out of the Hostel door at 3:30am on Sunday morning for a push up Helvellyn, for a perfect summit sunrise. This was followed by Ullswater singletrack. Not a bad weekend at all :)

This website has some incredible shots of where I live, including a holiday park at the end of the road which I had no idea existed. Hopefully it has some shots of your area.

Thanks to those who took the time to read it and for the kind comments.

Tillydog; thanks for pointing out those mistakes. I’ll go back and edit what I can but I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Russl; we drunk plenty of energy drinks and water along the way as well but after long days in the saddle beer was a must! Plus, you have to sample to the local tipples!!

Naranjada; yeh, people over there just live bikes. It was such a refreshing change. The fact we’d planned virtually nothing really helped us have a spontaneous trip. Loved it!

Scott; I’m glad you enjoyed it and thanks for reading. Those long summer rides seem a long way off still!

Everything is told exactly as it happened. I used strava to remind myself of the route we rode and to calculate distances and timings. Why do you ask?

I made notes as soon as I returned home and begun writing in October 2014. It took a lot of time and effort to write as you can probably imagine. I was busy with other things (including more riding, obviously) so I’d often go a few months without writing anything at all but it’s nice to finally have it finished.

I had my first trip there in September and I’m back there next week. It’s a 5 1/2 hour drive each way but so worth it!

I was just wondering how dark the trails are at this time of year (especially in the trees) towards the end of the day, bearing in mind that sunset is 4:15pm. I didn’t really want to have to take my lights.

M6TTF, did you replace the original pawls with all new Hope pawls? I’m just wondering if it would be best to have four identical pawls, to ensure that load is spread evenly, etc, rather than two SRAM and two Hope.

I believe the Roam 30 and Roam 40 pawls and springs are identical. The difference in hubs is that the Roam 30 has two pawls but the Roam 40 has four pawls.

Adding two pawls to a Roam 30 converts it to a Roam 40. I have a Roam 30 and I’ve searched for spare pawls so that I can add the extra two but I’ve not been able to find them anywhere.

I’d also read that Hope Evo 3 pawls worked but I’ve not gone down that route, yet.

I’d be interested to hear if you have more luck than me at sourcing the pawls.

I had the V60 R-Design up until June and absolutely loved it.

Granted, there may be cars with bigger boots, but this was ample for me. No problems for a weekend away with four of us in the car, four bikes on the roof and all the accompanying gear in the boot. It was also big enough to carry four of us to the Lake District with gear for a weekend of wild camping.

Seven hour drives from Fort William were no problem either.

I’d not hesitate in getting another.

The bearing in my front wheel on the non drive side only lasted about 250 miles before the wheel developed play. I spent an age trying to source new bearings and after asking Wych Bearings, they replied to say they were expecting a delivery from America in the next few days. Once they’d received them, they sent me the following links.

    http://www.wychbearings.co.uk/MR-23327-LLB-Enduro.html

    http://www.wychbearings.co.uk/CO-MR-23327-LLB-Zero_Ceramic.html

I bought the bearing in the top link (just because it was cheaper) and it fits perfectly. I don’t know if there would be a benefit of paying extra for the ceramic bearing??

Also, just for reference, I only replaced the bearing on the non drive side because the drive side bearing seemed fine.

I also have the ragley ones after my plastic clips fell straight out. As already mentioned, well worth £10. Just frustrating that something like this wasn’t fitted from the factory.

Thanks, Danny. That sounds like the same issue as what I’m having. Would you please update this thread once the bearings have been replaced so I know if it’s a job I need to consider.

What were the symptoms of knackered bearings, Danny?

My Roam 30 on the front has developed some play whereby it knocks/feels loose. The maxle is tight enough. It’s only done about 200 miles.
