I find it much easier get higher heart rates on the road bike. It’s hard to maintain sufficient effort across mtb terrain.

If you prefer to expend minimal effort I agree mtb is harder though.

Also agree roadies are generally fitter – in mtb events they always blitz you on the fire roads then mince down the singletrack!

Merlin customer service was very poor when I returned an expensive pair of (altura) shorts which just fell apart a couple of years back. Not just the fact they weren’t replaced but the manner in which it was dealt with. Had just started browsing their site again for forks but will think twice now. Have always had good experiences with fishers warranty though.

I got the rim when they very first came out so maybe that’s the issue and they’ve sorted it.

Come to think of it the tightest tyre I ever tried was a Halo one I got cheap.

Bontrager mud won’t stay on from new. Bontrager jones acx neither.

Not keen on schwalbe so haven’t tried them

    Geax sounds interesting

Anyone have a view on specialized 29er as captain would be my first choice? Moved over to Specialized on all of my other wheels (all 26er) but never found them super tight.

    Thanks for replies

If they struggled cos their rim was slightly oversized then what they say won’t help you much

Fair enough – I suspect there are folk that have tried a few different tyres on the same rim

Which halo rim do you have?

Halo freedom disc. The issue is that it just pops off the rim when inflated. I have solved it by running ghetto tubeless with inner tube but would like to try with stans tape this time. I think a tight tyre might be ok.

I had to tap axel out with a hammer in the end.

The bearings had rusted onto axel as you suggested.

    Thanks trail rat.

Yeah it’s from a model B wheel set.

Will give the vice a try as you say.

    Thanks

I rode it Friday and most of the best bits were snowy/icy. Been warm since then but I’d maybe wait till I knew it was all gone.

Coed y Brenin was perfect Wednesday – one of the best times I’ve been – dusty dry.

I went round Penmachno yesterday and there’s no way it was “pretty much clear”. It looked a bit clearer around the Marin area but I didn’t ride it. CYB however was perfect.

2 zone UFH with valliant combi boiler
    2 room stats(Chronogyr Rev11)
    2 pumps
    2 honeywell motorised valves
    No rads

Not sure about temperatures – that side works fine but the boiler stays on with no demand. Already checked the valves are working ok and had some other useful suggestions from posting on here to try out.

Can’t work out the wiring. Looks like it should be s plan plus minus HW. The UFH seems to have less wiring that most – can’t find a wiring centre for it and it’s just upstairs/downstairs and not room by room.

I think it’s a decent UFH system but has been wired by someone else either cheaply or without sufficient knowledge.

The L from the boiler is connected to same junction as the mains L whereas most wiring diagrams show it to orange from the motorised valves.
The 2 oranges from the valves are wired to different junctions and not sure where the boiler L would go.

But I don’t want to mess about and accidentally send 240v to a 24v circuit or something.

So basically in over my head and need a professional…

i don’t have a current meter. I disconnected the orange wires from each valve thinking that should kill the boiler just like the microswitch being off. So i was surprised when it didn’t….

I think there may be something in what geordiemick says as there are 3 wires in the stat lead but it is battery powered.

However i’m still confused why it only looks like one stat is wired to junction box….

Thanks for all suggestions much appreciated

thanks that sounds like something worth trying. I was a bit confused as from what i remenber there only seemed to be one lead coming in but 2 room stats (3 wires in it). Does this sound ok?

Thanks for replies. I don’t think it’s pump overun or frost protection.

I think the wiring is a bit of a DIY job so maybe they got something a bit wrong. Not the easiest thing to work out though with so many wires…

Have you unwittingly turned the brightness right down? (this was my mistake). You can change it by pressing (not holding) the power button.

Anyone know how I can work out if the tune on these is right for me please (Intense 5.5 EVP, 13.5 stone)?

Havent tried new pads as loathed to change them when they have some life left. Should probably it give it a go.

Thanks for replies and suggestions all.

Have you bed them in ??

Is there any fluid on the pads or discs at all?

I have had them I while but just
gradually got worse. Were fine to start with.

    I can’t find any leaks.

They seem to have sticky pistons too like avids with uneven pad wear and harder to push the pistons back in.

I could detect a small difference with freestroke but not enough to warrant having the screw hanging half out…

Yeah I thought it got the pads in quickly for not much lever travel. With mine it’s not just that – there’s no bite at all.

I can’t believe how much harder it is compared to my other Shimano ones. Maybe this is a result of how much more powerful they are than the old ones.

mindmap3 – how long did it take to get them back from Rose please?

My point was that the dropout wasn’t tough enough the resist the hanger twisting next to it and also got damaged in the process.

I thought hangers were designed to be shite to save the other bits. In this case I lost everything anyway…and if it hadn’t have broken I’d have probably been fine! So maybe you’re right.

To be fair to Planet X I bought one new hanger for £14.99 and there were 4 in the bag when it arrived.

    flattyre

Makes sense and certainley looks like that’s what happened. Does this mean that the dropout on the Nanolight isn’t tough enough to cope with this effect?

I suppose I shouldn’t be too suprised about the chunks out of the seat stays but with the dropout I would have thought when the hanger snapped it would just all break away freely rather than messing that up too?

Thanks for your replies and for pics Haze – looks very similar to mine.

I am always on top of the limit screws due to it having happened on mountain bikes and to stop the chain going down the back of the cassette. Also I wasn’t in the largest sprocket so I think it was possibly caused by hanger snapping first.

I’m a bit shocked by collateral damage to the frame though caused by the hanger snapping. Does this type of thing normally happen on this type of road frames?

Nant-y-arian is nice mixture of trail centre and natural trail in beautiful surroundings – plus loads of red kites if you like that type of thing

You can choose the smaller trails or do the whole lot in one at about 30km. To make the drive worthwhile I usually do that and then start again and just do the trail centre bits (turn left at the small reservoir).

ha ha same here with Llandegla. I go most weeks after work but I don’t mind it now it’s dark. Prefer the clwyds when they’re not a mud bath…

Nant-y-arian is well worth going a bit further for if you haven’t been before

Yeah Marin dull apart from last descent. Llandegla seems to have got more and more weatherproof over the years and was spot on today.

Thanks for the further replies. I followed the park guide link near the top which was the best guide I’ve ever seen. I’ve had mountain bikes for years so I know about not crossing the chain etc.

I just can’t understand why the rear indexing on my road bike triple is so different for each of the front rings. Therefore, it’s impossible to use the easiest gear and the hardest gear on the bike without changing the indexing (quite a lot). Being 10 speed obviously makes things tighter.

Bluebird’s response explains the reality of the situation but it doesn’t make sense because if you don’t run the largest gear at the back with the smallest at the front then what do you run it with? Why is it there?

very good lardman. Although a flat tyre with an alfine wheel is not that funny if you forgot your spanner (as I did once).

I had an 8 speed one for a while but didn’t get on with it. For all its undoubted benefits it felt like pedalling in treacle and the weight at the back made the bike feel dead on the flat and uphill (i quite liked it downhill). if they were as good as some people would have you believe mechs would already be extinct….
