I have a Focus estate (’58 if model matters).

I can get 3 bikes (front wheels off and seatposts dropped or out) in the back with the rear seat split. Still allows room for 3 adults – though the one in the back may feel a little ‘encroached’ and ceiling scraping is part of the deal

If your forks are bigger than 150mm you may hit (height) trouble. And you’ll need some old blankets or towels – or accept scratched bikes.

Mondeo estate is cavernous though I doubt it has much more height

    Brilliant.

I love it, just really well crafted TV.

And series 1 had the best use of an expletive ever.

Thanks for the info on the tools. I’ve considered them before – good to get a recommendation

But I’ve not seen them that cheap – where did you get them from?

    I’ve a ’58 Focus 2.0 TDCi Estate

Easily swallows three bikes (front wheels off) with the rear seat split, which leaves room for three adults.

Reckon I (5’9″) could easily sleep in it with one bike.

Tax is £140 / annum. I get 40 – 50 mpg depending how heavy my foot is.

Drives nicely and the pull from about 35mph in 4th is impressive.

Though I reckon a 2.0 TDCi Mondeo will suit you better and may even be cheaper.

Think your biggest problem will be that, at £3K, any vehicle will be ‘a bit of a punt’ – you might get a good ‘un , you might get a money-pit

Surely if tightened to the point of breaking the cup, the steerer would have been pretty much seized?

Hard to think it wouldn’t be noticed.

I’d go back to the shop. Be knowledgeable anticipate the likely questions and have your answers ready. Read the SOGA. Google for similar failures. Be prepared to kick up a stink if the reasonable approach gets you nowhere.

If you still get nothing – approach a frame builder for advice

imagine a town where every male inhabitant is Nigel Farage and every woman Katie Hopkins… Welcome to Marlow

    .

Now that’s just not true. A good half of the men are more ‘Tim nice but dim.’ than Farage.

Playing with kids at Lyme seafront with one of those mini rugby balls with a tail

Wanted to show the kids that dad still had it so let the thing rip. Beautiful, it flew and flew right into a group of ‘older folk’ and hit a lady full on the side of the face

Didn’t feel manly at all

I rounded a rotor bolt last night. The method Lester describes above worked a treat.

I’ve the Lidl one and for £30 it’s fine. Better stands available but they’ll cost you more

As for clamping – using the seatpost can be advantageous with some frames. My Anthem doesn’t have full outer gear cables – and they run under the top tube. Clamping here prevents the rear mech working as the cables get snagged in the clamp

    Slight change of plan

My head was well and truly turned by an Ibis Mojo HD 140. was always one of my favourite bikes

Frame bought, for a little over £400

    26er I know (though manual says it’ll run 27.5 – we’ll see)

Now on the hunt for some 140/150 forks – probably Revs.

Bandit 29 us a perfectly good shout. However I’m 5’8 so likely be riding a medium if whatever I buy. Personal taste, I realise, but I just don’t like S or M 29ers – too much wheel!

Maybe I should have gone higher in the Bandit 27.5 (it went for £390 and looked super clean)

It’s a very simple tool. Just needs to be well made with no play or bend.

I have the Park Tools one. Works well enough but is pricey for what it is.

The ‘ghetto’ methods above (old hub etc) work but are a bit of a faff

If I was buying again I’d probably go with a cheaper one.

I’d suggest buying the CRC Brand X. If it’s a bit crap you can always return it. But I suspect it’ll work just fine

I’d agree with NW. I have the On-One Emmental (I think the same rims as the Dune). No luck at all getting the tyre seated (using a ‘Ghetto’ Airshot made from a 2l pop bottle). Just isn’t happening

By the way, Goldigger, I wouldn’t put the valve stem back in (Step 7). You’ll get air in the tyre faster without it. Can then remove pump (or air supply), finger over valve and quickly screw the core back in. Obviously you’ll lose a few psi but the tyre should stay seated

I had the same problem yesterday – most of Swinley now seems to be in my car or house!

This won’t really help the OP but just putting it up there.

Saw a guy in the car park using one of the new Karcher OC3 things. Re-chargeable Li battery and looks very neat. His bike was beautifully clean. Only a small 4l tank (though I guess you could take more with you) and 15 mins run time. Reckon you could get 2 or 3 bikes done in that time (at least get most of the grot off)

I’d get one if it weren’t for the crazy high price tag (£129 RRP)

Not sure if they’re available yet – he’d bought his at the bike show
