    Hi Mark

Please do drop into your GP. As said above, anything with your GP is confidential. I have some similar issues and recently visited my GP. I’m very glad I did, it was a very positive experience and she really did get it. Mental health awareness is everywhere now and GPs take it very seriously.

    Samaritans can help too

I’m often at Swineley and happy to share a few hours on the trails

    I got a 10.8V DeWalt set for £150

I think it’s widely available. The drill is so-so but the impact driver is excellent

I drove to Oxford this morning, circa 20 miles. I couldn’t find an Evans anywhere.

    To whom should I complain?

I don’t think that biking is the problem

I think it’s more about this:

‘the seemingly inevitable and reasonably persistent stream of crap provided by the rest of reality’

Though I can completely relate to it.

Much like others have said, plenty of decent XC type riding.

But at the moment is a chalky mess. Irritatingly it sticks to absolutely everything but offers absolutely no grip

Not checked but I imagine The Ridgeway is rideable

Thanks all. The positive responses above do really have an impact. Little things make a big difference

@ curto80. Apologies, i did not mean ti be dismissive of mindfullness. I know that a great nany people find it very helpful. And maybe I will too at some future time. Just at the moment I find it hard. Im just too ‘restless’

    Just a PS…

Happy to talk to anyone suffering from this modern malaise. PM me or post here (you’ll get a huge ‘group hug’)

    Don’t be alone…. because you’re not.

    Disagree deadkenny.

I don’t particularly enjoy Stickler as I’m too old and unfit to give it 10/10 to get the most from it.

However it takes a very fit and very competent rider to post a top time round Stickler. It’s not ‘Enduro’ or ‘Gnar’ (obviously – it’s flat!!) just a different type of off road ability. To be faster round Stickler I’d get more benefit from being a ‘better rider’ than from improving my fitness

I drink too much. Too regularly, rarely have an evening without a beer. I don’t do pints and pints; just a couple of bottles each night, a bit more Fri / Sat night. I know it’s too much

Kryton – TBH, sounds like your relationship with alcohol is just fine. A few nights a week, not to excess. Sounds fine to me

Why are there no winter boots for flats? It’s a question raised often. Puzzling

Doc Martens are a new suggestion for me – but if they work then why not.

I just put on extra socks. But cold feet is the number one reason I get ‘cold feet’ for going out in winter

Like many have said an experience; something that you can both look back on with fondness when she’s 70.

It could be a romantic weekend away just the two of you, or a get together with all her (and your) nearest and dearest. Or the Chippendales! If it’s something material make it something ‘unnecessary’ that she’d never buy for herself (and price isn’t really the point).

FWIW, I’d take my wife to Barcelona and get a photo album with lots of happy memories from when I first knew her till now

Didn’t realise this was open. Just need to check (with the Mrs) that we’re free that weekend and, if so, I’ll be entering the 50:50. I need a goal to aim at

    Simples then.

He can buy a 160mm Yari which will get his bike built and get him going. If he so wishes, he can adjust it in the future to 170mm or 180mm

    vincienup – Thanks, very helpful.

Opens up more possibilities knowing that he can get a 160mm Yari (plenty on eBay) and convert cheaply to 170mm Yari (hardly any on eBay).

OP here – sorry I’ve not been back – duty calls elsewhere

Thanks for all the suggestions. I’ve added the Civic to my shortlist. Vauxhalls I’ve never got on with (I’m an ex Ford employee too so, yes, a bit biased!). I like the Leon too but told space is considerably less than the Octavia

I get the ‘diesels are going to take a whack, soon’, but it’s a chance I’ll have to take. Good as the new small capacity petrol engines are, I simply don’t see them lasting 150K+ miles.

After going through all of this I’ll probably end up with another Focus!

But can you get three bikes in the back with the seats split? I can in the Focus. I’ve had five bikes in it with the rear seats fully down

I remain unconvinced that a bit of vegetation or some other trail feature can pull a (bent over) pin out.

Surely more likely the pin has broken due to fatigue where it gets bent after fitting.

Or most likely, forgetting to re-fit the pin

SaxonRider: Think well of the 20 year old – I’m sure it was meant as a compliment. Remember when you were 20; 46 was ‘well old’!!

Me, 47. A whippersnapper on this thread though not to my kids who call me old, bald and fat (2 of those 3 are true :x )

I’m going to recommend what I own: Addidas Terrex Cross SL.

Comfy, plenty grippy (Addidas now own 5-Ten, I believe) and look better than most off the bike – they’re decent for walking too.

    My split is about
    50% FS trail bike
    25% fat bike
    25% gravel bike

That’s measured in number of trips. Measured by distance, gravel bike would be quite a bit higher

My fat bike usage has pretty much fitted the graph above

    I loathe it

Changing the rear brake on my son’s Orange 5 was ridiculously time consuming. And what’s the benefit – mainly that you can hear it coming from half a mile away

Le Creuset are expensive, no doubt. But I’ve a full set of pans and cocottes I was gifted nearly 30 years ago. All are still going strong and regularly used. I imagine I’ll pass them on to one of my kids.

I dare say some of the cheaper stuff is also decent – but when it lasts 30+ years why argue over a few quid?

That reminds me. There’s a rotor bolt missing from my CX bike which I lent to someone to replace a bolt from their cleats, back when it was still warm and sunny.

Does the lack of a bolt kill you to death frequently?
