@shaggy what did you use ?

I’ve got some (3) old school 531c bikes whose characteristics I love.

I’ve had 531, 531st and 725 and not liked the characteristics so much (didn’t “plane”). Reynolds still make standard 531 for Pashley…

    I wonder what’s closest to 531c ? Any ideas ?

Thanks for these. I can see myself whiling away happy hours on bikecad. Jigging looks a really interesting problem.

I wouldn’t dare suggest a course to him. I won’t say what he’s done in the motorbike world as that would betray anonymity but he’s well regarded.

@thepodge what was the limiting factor ?

    Agreed on the xenons.

But it’s dangerous when I have to stop on a road that’s wide enough for two lorries – I’ve had cars overtake me and nearly wipe out the oncoming cyclist !

The ride also has a climb to the col of Portes du Soleil which you can do or no

Not if you miss the last lift (which we’ve done twice)…

Going down country lanes its not unusual for them to pull over and wait for me to pass when i’m riding towards them.

Have you checked the angle of your lights ? I have to stop these days, and it’s not out of politeness. We need German legislation on cut-off angles…

12 months isn’t a bad life for a pair of rims if you weigh 100 kilos. And would you really want to sell them on with an issue you know about?

I’d dispute this. I’m over 100kg, clumsy and my road rims have always lasted until the pads have worn through the rim. My lack of finesse is evidenced by the fact I get less than 1000 miles for a rear tyre.

The CXP23s on my lightest bike are 16 years old, have been ridden to Rome from London (including Strade Bianche), used on commutes during the summer, probably done >20000 miles. And won a couple of ‘sporting’ time trials.

I build my own and use a tension meter. For the OP, a tension meter might be a decent investment.

I forgot the baby robins. Sadly, our westie has actually done that. 🙁

take some road tyres too. Ride around the perimeter. Then muse on Sean Yates’ opinion that it’s “essentially flat” when he won a 1980’s time trial on a fixed !

After yesterday evening’s new ‘Personal Worst’ commute time, I’m quite keen on that…

To get back to the OP’s question, I think there’s so much that I’m taking only a gravel bike this year. I think Col de Cou, round the Swiss side, up over the Col de Chesery back down into Les Linderets should be on if the weather’s good.

1 Westie 1 Scottie. Raw chicken carcasses, bones and all. 5 years in and they’re loving it.

The SON was supposed to last forever, but turned out to be very German, i.e. over-hyped and under-engineered. And unfixable.

    Love the OP’s build BTW.

V interested in how long the dynamo hub lasts. My SON lasted 5 years, and BQ are reporting failures of SONs. Be great if this lasts the course…

Not only were they rubbish, they also ruined another good band.

I remember an interview with Jim Kerr where he said that he had seen what U2 were doing (financially) and he wanted a piece of it.

So the band who produced music as beautiful as ‘Somewhere in Summertime’ metamorphosed into the godawful band who made ‘Waterfront’…and worse.

Not many bands not only make bad music but also ruin music as a concept. U2 did that.

sgn23 has it. Just been to the station and got some tickets. But why on earth are they released out of order ?

Anyway, me and the Guv’nor will be doing the UK’s silliest sportive dressed totally inappropriately. Excellent.

Consider your neighbours and don’t make it too high. Next door made one and unintentionally produced a platform where their kids would just stand and watch us instead of playing…

You won’t get a Galaxy cheap. The whole Eroica thing has inflated the price of old bikes. Molgrips answer is the best.

You might just fit a 23 but more likely a 22. I’m 35 inside leg and ride a 25 in old money, but a 61 on a new bike.

However, your biggest problem for gravel and particularly cobbles will be breaking rear axles. I broke one on last years Eroica and replaced the QR with a solid in the hope that will be stronger. They’re only supported by 2 bearings, not the 4 on recent bikes.

Steel Peugeot frames are quite nice but the tubes are odd sizes so seatposts etc are a PITA. Find an old Raleigh Royal, not too old though as it’ll have 630 wheels not 622 (although 630s do ride nice).

Project – I guess I’ll be with the hoi polloi.

sgn 23 – but oddly I was able to book my gravel bike up to Bangor for the following week (20 May) for our epic coast to coast. Let’s hope I don’t get the bikes mixed up, I’m not sure the Guv’nor’s ready for Coed y Brenin…

Yeah, the Tweed Run is what I’m going to. But last year we were the only bikes on the train (just as well, as Pashleys are way too big for the space allocated).

It happens to me every year at this time. TBH, now I’m old, I only like off-road when it’s warm and dry.

I think these would render a Diverge the perfect bicycle. I intend to build some for mine.

I was amused in the comments by someone describing Jan Heine’s bikes as French re-enactments !

willard, taking a modern imac apart is beyond me. Sadly, it ain’t like an old PC. I’m hoping it’s the power supply. If I could get it apart to get at the hard drive I’d do the psu at the same time…

Thanks, gobuchul. Hoping not to need to erase the disc as I hope to be able to leave apps and utilities on to save time when it’s fixed…or am I being naive and should erase ?

perchy, my wife’s the main user, there may be ridiculous quantities of shoe images…hopefully nothing worse.

I would NOT be doing deadlifts or good mornings until you have confidence that the core is strong and your back isn’t going to pop.

    This x100. Nor bent-over rows.

Plank + variations are the best FWIW

Nothing wrong with downtube shifters. If it’s 5 speed at the back you won’t be changing gear all the time like on a modern bike.
