    Indeedy.

I have recently done a Personal Trainer course so I know the ‘measurements’ at the moment. ‘Measurements’ in quotes because all these methods are approximations. I prefer the ‘if you can see your abs and the split in your biceps then you’re under 10%’ approximation. Because that gives me an answer I like even better.

When I train for bike racing I won’t get on the scales, I closely monitor the power meter on the turbo or on the bike. And do geeky graphs etc (which probably don’t help either).

I suppose the important point is that if you think your monitoring will do some good, by placebo effect it probably will. And for that reason it may be worth doing. I’d just rather do the stuff that I think monitors the results that may be transferable to the goal (more speed = winning races).

I’ve also found I’m fastest running when thinnest, but fast cycling seems (in my case) to need a couple of extra fat kilos…

    ‘race weight’ ? WTF ?

Are there races for different weight classes now ?

Get off the scales and on the bike and aim for maximum SPEED.

16% according to this. Tanita scales say 23%. Skinfold says 19%. I think I like this method !

the terms of riding there have always been the same

changing yearly IME. The map at the tourist office always has some detail / allowed route that’s different.

Also, Cham’s only OK if you’re megafit. I was out of shape when I went in 2009 and it was awful. Back in form last year and it was fab.

for mrs flap_jack it was intolerance to oats and rice. Other grains fine. Stopped the oats & rice, stopped the IBS.

Nowhere. Going to this, which is ironic how much I said I didn’t like motor racing. But I do like stunt motor-bikes…

You’ll find a Golf TDI plenty fast enough if it’s your first car, and very safe too. Given enough road it’ll creep up to twice the national limit…

And you can get your bike in it.

    Mark, that’s great news.

I despair at what’s happened to Prospect over the last few months…

That’s where mobile devices are best, surely

Not in my clumsy world. I’d break/submerge/drop them.

Don’t forget to get the sloes out like we did last year. Leaving them in 12 months doesn’t work, just tastes musty. :?

I subscribe to three magazines: STW, Prospect and Private Eye. The first two are changing significantly, with more web only content.

    This I really don’t like.

I read the mags in odd moments – on the train, in the bog, whilst making a tea or coffee, passenger in car coming back from rides, etc. By the time I’ve read them, the mags are tatty, torn and teastained.

A mobile device is not suitable for any of these moments, and so I’m not getting to see the whole content. Hence I can see a time when I will cancel these subs, despite having been on board with both since day 1.
I’d be interested in how many others feel this way.

Private Eye, however, remains unchanged and an interview with Hislop indicates it will remain stoically print only. Thank God.

Founders Arms pub, on south bank right outside Tate Modern.

Fabulous view of St Pauls as it’s right on the banks of the Thames. The food is OK, and at this time of year they have lovely winter drinks on. The time you’re talking about should see a great sunset too.

Get to St Paul’s, cross the wobbly bridge and turn right (well, left as you exit the bridge walking back towards the river…)

I have this setup on 3 bikes, all work fine. Well, I never use the extremes on the middle ring – I didn’t think they were valid combinations for the reasons you specify.

StefMcDef – I remember the day Tesco opened. From the queues, you’d have thought they were giving gold bars away.

I’d love E Cowes parish to out up a sign like that – W Cowes has been up it’s own backside for about 300 years, yet apart from that one week, it’s dead. (I lived there 1985-1992)

    was warned about East Cowes-ists

Indeed. However, my niece and her family lives in East Cowes and seem to like it. OK if you’re family orientated, bit dull otherwise.

Of course in E Cowes you’ll have to wait for the chain ferry to bring the telegram over to the exchange first.

    Hahaha, nothing changes then…

I’m trying to work out a way of seeing how many from my ‘I like to ride alone’ thread say they want to meet others…

Those I have met have been totally sound. I can only conclude that everyone else is too.

My sis (who lives way off grid on the IOW) uses sky. Somewhere urban like Cowes may well have better options.

I grew up on the IOW. Get out of E Cowes ASAP. Newport is where it’s at. Ventnor if you want something a bit more bohemian. Mother lives in Shanklin. She’s 90, and about mid-age-range for the town…

Stereotypes are just that. Individual cases will vary. I work with Italian engineers who are absolutely excellent. Just to push the stereotype further, they are based in so-called lazy Rome but they work like trojans.

we like the Igloo Hotel, as it’s got a guest’s kitchen. Right in the town too.

The lift out of Morzine is the real pinch point on the route – waited an hour in 2008 – so allow plenty of time for that. In 2009 we cycled the hill instead, which took nearly as long, and we were tired, which caused crashes – only 2 of our group of 6 completed !

+1 for pinch punctures – even with 50psi…

We feed ours on the BARM (bones and raw meat) regime. Healthy as butcher’s dogs…that’ll be where the expression comes from.

Many non-chain pet shops hold suitable stuff, usually frozen. Chicken carcasses mainly, that have had the breasts and legs removed for sale, but still have kidneys etc attached.

We feed ours on the patio to keep the raw meat out of the house.

12 weeks seems late to me, presume he’ll come fully shotted up so get him socialised as quick as poss.

A friend had her breast cancer treated with herceptin. She’s still alive 5 years on. Difficult to know what the outcome would have been without it of course, but her it’s all good.
