If funds allowed, a cyclo-cross bike with road tyres might be a good idea to get back into it. They tend to have rather more forgiving steering characteristics.
    Good luck whatever.

Having looked at maps, and considering the current trail conditions, I think I may do sustrans route 51 to Stewartby and then use the roads.
I’ll wait for a dry spell before attempting something completely off road…

I presume using the Greensands ridge footpath is a mostly passable if cheeky way ?

I’d be interested in what Mick Ives eats. That’s how I want to be at his age.

My wife said she’d phoned the police, and they got really quite nasty. A very unpleasant business.

IHN of this parish runs a 203 with his BB7 and seems to have plenty of stopping power.

I have 203 front 185 back. Hauls my 100kg down to zero in astonishingly quick time, limiting factor being tyres, even sticky high rollers. I’ve had worse motorbike brakes.

Powerful and no hassle. And you can continue to use the fancy STI levers you bought all those years ago…

I agree with the lightweight shoes brigade. Walking boots are a disaster IMO. I did 43 miles in 11 hours in approach shoes some years ago, and to be honest have never put a pair of walking boots on again.

The polar unit is not crap, but you do have to understand its limitations. Only get one if you can’t afford better.

There are other benefits, I’m not very interested in the power measurement, but the L/R balance and the ‘PI’, which his the proportion of the stroke you put the power through, are really useful training aids IMO.

OP – depends when you’re going. If it’s in May then there’s the walking festival, including the mammoth ‘Walk the Wight’ which is fantastic if the weather’s nice.

I’m over this weekend, visiting mother. It’s her 90th , so don’t go to the Chequers as it will be full of my family !

    Josie Dew, on a train.

She was returning from a talk. She had all her slides in one pannier and a projector in the other. Had a really good chat, then she cycled off into the rain with a cheery smile. What a cool person she is.

They can only use bridleways so not techy at all. Last one I did (2009) was a long schlep out towards Bedford and back. I did enjoy it as a nice ride in the countryside, but you could have done it on a CXer.

    I have one of these.

You can get a bike in the back without removing the wheels.

I think it’s about throwing bikes into backs of vans which have unprotected sharp edges. A deepish scratch on Ti, Al or Fe isn’t a disaster, but it can be on a carbon bike.

I wouldn’t have one for the same reason.

    Our usual trip is:

take friday off work and drive over. Stop for a couple of laps of Cymcarn on the way.
    Saturday W2 + Skyline July.
Sunday whatever you fancy. Drive home.

Sadly used to be much better when the Drop-Off was open as you got enough decent food to keep you going. New cafe rubbish.

Chains seem to shagged after the first ride according to the Park wear meter thing. I’d pay £50 for a chain that lasted a couple of years.

We usually do Cwmcarn on the way to Afan.

If I had a choice of 1 for a day I’d go to Afan as there’s only one loop at Cwncarn.

    This assuming you pedal…

    Campylobacter works well too

Hmmm, had that in 2004. 6 months off the bike. In some ways, never recovered. Not recommended.

Saving money IMO. If you have a long shot on sick stuff no one notices how much money you saved on minutes of dialogue.

Lazy too. Gratuitous stuff is easy to do.
