Bought first issue of the magazine at the old Coed-y-Brenin outdoor shop. Can see the entire magazine collection from where I’m sitting.

So, on here from August 2001…originally jack not flap_jack, changed name when I acquired that sobriquet from always being last to be ready during a tour-de-mont-blanc in 2003.

I have one right in the heart of MK. As long as the Parks Trust keep planting I’ll keep burning 😀

My favourite anti-KOPS argument was from a recumbent rider.

I’d be scared witless on my MTB if I used my road setup (which itself is pretty relaxed).

Length & height you say, did you KOPS and sort out resultant hip / knee flexion ?

IMO MUCH nicer looking than a Five and worth doing for that reason alone.

    Thanks.

    Trying channel 1, looking promising.

Didn’t get on with the Topeak, too wide and kept bashing my inner thighs.

Anyone else use a proper long pump ? Inflates a tyre faster than a canister. About 7 strokes to 100 psi. Everyone hates them for some reason.

    Road.

If I can get it off the turbo, which it has been connected to for about 3 months !

Get a cheap turbo and spend money on data collection on the bike. Then you can gather the data when out on the road too.

Seat angle seems too slack on the figures, what’s it like in real life ?

did it with MBMB in 2003. Probably all knowledge now out of date. Easy way to do it though.

Only problem with September is that it gets dark early and can be cold – I’ve been to Cham quite a few septembers and it’s surprising how early the chill sets on even on a nice day…

I’m in my fifties, and I reckon I’ve seen less than half a dozen decent summers. So that’s one a decade.

    Ones that stick out:

    1967, 1969, 1976, 1995, 2003

Maybe we’re due another soon ?

Some proper cold winters in the early 80s due to Mount ST Helen’s eruption I believe…

I only (relatively) recently stopped using downtube shifters on my tourer. Truly horrible, cannot imagine why you’d want to do this on a bike you’d actually ride.

    Cable is lovely though…

That’s not proper old. The original has metal tongues on the slots and you have to assemble upside down with some horrendously sharp clips.

yep, definitely Yarmouth battery, Ventnor sea front and the golf course above Freshwater bay. – ex caulkhead…

to quote Sean Yates, anyone who gets bored during a 3 hour turbo session isn’t trying hard enough…

Is some of that filmed of the Isle of Wight ? Particularly the crabs in a bucket scene and the final golf course somersault ?

the luge lift doesn’t take you high enough IIRC, and is rather fragile.

the Les Gets bit of the passportes is going to be very interesting, that’ll be complete;y bottlenecked however they do it. We’ll be on XC bikes so shall be able to ride up the road, wouldn’t fancy it on a DHer.

Simple overtraining rule – according to Charles Polaquin, if you’re still waking up with a boner you’re OK.

no matter how hard you pimp it, it won’t be as good as a Birdy…

What chains/ drivetrain are you using? I’ll avoid it, must be made of cheese

SRAM’s finest cheese. Woburn’s sand mixed with water = bike grinding paste.

My training record shows that on the equivalent sunday in 2010 it was 12 degrees and sunny, and I did 77 miles.

    Grrr

a bit of water and mud won’t kill you.

I cannot afford it. In this weather, 3 rides and the chain’s ruined, 3 chains and the remainder of the drivetrain is gone. That’s over £10 a ride, and we haven’t got onto brakes or cables yet. Rules 5 and 19 are for rich boys, not ‘hard’ men.

Rule 5 doesn’t say you have to enjoy it.

Not all French services are any good. And the French side of the tunnel is much worse than the UK side IMO.

However, the Bresse services on the A40 is magnificent. (That’s the A40 to Chamonix, not Oxford, BTW)

Beware, my Schmidt hub expired after about 8 years with no apparent way of fixing it. Now an expensive paperweight (the rim having been re-used). Battery lights so good now (and rapidly improving) I don’t think I’d bother again.

have to get the cable car from the beach up to town

MTFU and walk it. Stayed there whilst training for 3 peaks and ran it every morning…

Have you ever got out without spending a ton ?

Lots of restrictions after July 1st, and the lifts are hellish expensive – 50e for a day pass on Flegere when I went in 2010. Good XC riding still available though but you really gotta earn it with huge climbs, e.g up to Col de Balme then back down to Trier, then road or train home. Massive day out.

Turbo trainers set up in ours at this time of year. Perfect whilst watching it snow…
